I have told that joke to all my neices and nephews,my kid,and my two grand nieces over the years, and everyone of them laughed at it. Can't beat the muppets for a good joke lol.
I know nobody is going to believe this, but I think my dad came up with that joke back in the mid 80s. He, my sister and I all remember it happening: My sister drew a picture of a rhino with an elephant trunk and she showed it to us, saying, "It's a cross between an elephant and a rhino. What should I call it?" And my dad fell over laughing at the idea of calling it Elephino. (In truth, I wouldn't be surprised if the joke was actually older than that, but none of us had heard it before!)
Classic is how I meant it, semantics or not. Classic is a perfect example of something, that's the definition. Muppets Tonight is not that, no matter the age for such. It was a new version of something that was classic television. The Muppet Show was also played on the Disney Channel at the same time this was, some people just get the two mixed up. It's ok, it's still a good show, but I wasn't alluding to seminal. We're on the same page, but getting there differently.
HOLY CRAP. I haven't thought about this in years. I remember watching this when I was little, and I thought this episode was the greatest thing ever. my brother had to explain the joke to me, but yeah this episode was great. I love pepe and the elephant explaining the joke.
@bowbowyoyo it isn't a classic disney show, but a muppets show, and not particularly classic. It was on ABC primetime. The disney channel watermark was from a rerun.
@Mediaright I wasn't aware Muppets Tonight was so highly revered by the younger general populous of the world's youth. It's good, it was funny, but I'm not sure it had the same impact as The Muppet Show is the point, no matter the age of the viewer.
@oansun Well, then we're getting into semantics. =\ Classic is different from seminal, which seems to be what you're alluding to. The Muppet Show was before our time, and most kids of a certain age only had Sesame Street and a few movies to draw from. So when you see celebrities joking it up with the Muppets, and it's good, it leaves an impression. That's why it's "classic". Maybe not earth-shaking, but to these kids, classic.
My friends Ckyrro and Joe tell this joke repeatedly throughout the school day and if they were anybody else, I'd smack them or tell them to stfu. They have driven it into the ground!! But they still make me smile!! I love those guys!! ^-^ and their Ernie and Cookie sketch in our school Spring performance!! - Stasia
Pepe was the best muppet EVER!!! and he wasnt Jim Henson's creation, wow. He's so hilarious, he gets on several late nite talk shows, still!! Where did he come from? Hell if i kno, i mean, elifino!!!
@Goodman910 This show (Muppets Tonight) was his debut. I saw this, and I was hooked. His performance in Muppets from Space just killed me. Unquestionably the best Muppet created since Jim Henson died (although Piddles is growing to be a strong second).
My guess is that its just because hes not as popular as Pepe. And ever since Muppets Tonight was canceled there really hasnt been a lot of opportunity to show off the more obscure muppets.
There havnt been many movies since then either (and the movies primarily feature just the original jim henson muppets anyway)
Maybe he will reemerge now that The Muppets are making their own youtube videos.
This was on the Disney Channel?? ... AWESOME!!! 8D
