I don't understand why people put on steel cables on homemade crossbows.

Modern string materials are X times stronger and lighter than a steel cable.

All you end up with a steel cable is a slow underpowered crossbow.

This is damn cool. I've recently been interested in semi-auto/auto crossbows, particularly chu-ko-nus but this is putting new meaning in my interest. I'd love to try to make one of these someday.

while they go into wood easy enough, would they have worked in the middle ages? crossbows had such long reload times (and needed a crank) because they built up insane amounts of force.

Actually, arrows in a crossbow are called bolts, since they are different that arrows fired from a manual bow.

Nope. I didn't like the way the cho ko nu worked, the entire magazine has to move on the cho ko nu, the one I made has only one moving part (other than the actual string on the bow).
