It was only until I started following the natural care community on YouTube, did I ever hear about Mr. Walker's "Hair Typing System", and I still don't get it.
thanks for this kimmaytube. Im a transitioner. 3 months so far. I have been doing a lot of research and came across this numerical way of classifying hair and had no idea what it meant. thanks for clearing it up for me. Your videos are great.
As one who has just decided to go natural and one who loves to research and plan...I found this video informative and helpful. I'm not so sure I will purchase this book, as my main objective for "typing" my hair is to learn how to care for it.
Question - how long does the hair need to grow before you can really tell the texture/type of it? I've been relaxing my hair for over 20 years, and I'm sure my hair will experience a "shock" before the actual texture is revealed.
I have several textures within my hair. I like the classification system simply when it comes to buying products; because as you said the system is used in product descriptions, etc. So I know I'm a 4yes, but 4b and 4c products and styles work well for me.
I love to point out to ppl that not ALL white people have naturally straight hair, Carrot Top has curly hair, Tom Jones, the girl from Felicity and some have very frizzy hair. ....And that black people have curly hair.
I still wonder why people still use the term 'black hair.' It's like saying American food -that's like everything. Black hair is like D - all of the above (type 1,2,3,4) And some families do have all of the above.
The genetic indicators that dictate the difference in human hair and skin are so minute, that we might as well separate ourselves by blood type or vision LOL -
Gee...each new hair fact leaves me with a new hair question. My hair is caught between 2 worlds, has definite coils, most people say it's not 4c then, but the coils are too small and tight to be 4b.
To quote Shakespeare, "What's in a name? That which we call a rose
My initial concern about knowing my hair type was for understanding what styling products work best for me. Some of these products are too expensive to buy and throw or give away. I have figured out what products work for me but I still don't know my hair type and I don't really care anymore LOL!
I found this video very informative. I've heard a lot of natural youtubers talk about hair types (4a, 4b, etc.) but they've never explained it as you did. Thanks :)
Btw, I honestly thought that was some conditioner left over in your hair or something like that, until you mentioned it was gray hair. lol! You crack me up!
but why each type have to be certain RACES? There is black people with silky straight hair who haven't altered it there hair asian people with afros and so is white people with fros.. i just don't like it when people put one race hair in one catorgorey..
I think the author was essentially trying to generalize about the hair types of different races. It's just a general view, you don't have to buy into it. Of course, there are always people who contradict these gradations and categories and people who are exceptions to the rule.
I had the book yrs ago, and I referenced it a lot. It actually taught me how to take care of my hair in between seeing a beautician, but I have misplaced the book and I need help with my natural. (BTW I wasn't going to say anything about your gray until you said stop staring at it. LOL)
I have the book Kimmay! Had it for years and never cracked it open until i started caring about by natural hair. I think Andre did a good job of distinguishing that not all hair is the same, even if he missed a few of the hairtypes. Very thorough reporting, thanks for the vid.
The topic for my Natural Hair Radio Talk Show tonight is about Hair Types... It starts in 10 minutes (Nov 10th, 8:30PM, est) WEHA Gospel 88.7 FM or via web: wehagospel887(dot)com
4B being as small as pen spring. He seems to have forgotten the majority of the African population witch coil is smaller then a pen spring. I'm 4C period. He should have put me too in his classification.
I bought that book at a library sale about 8 years ago, once a year the library will sell off old books. The section on natural hair was very helpful to me at that time, because a lot of african american stylist was not into natural hair care and could not offer me a lot of help and there was no youtube and people like you to get a lot of information from back. then.
Yeah. I tried to give a fair and balanced review. A lot of this experimentation with our hair is a new thing. There is solid info in the book--it is in bad need of updating though.
Yes, that book needs some serious updating, look at the the bottom of page 34, where he says that type 4 hair in its natural state, that the hair will not grow long and that every time you come type 4 hair it will break, and that it will only grow long if kept in dreadlocks or braids, maybe he did not invest ia lot of time trying to condition type 4 hair or other ways to manage it.
Great vid. I read the book a few years back but by then I was a member of great hair boards like LHCF and knew almost everything in the book already. Lol. It's an ok book for a newbie just starting to delv more into hair care.
It was probably ground-breaking back in the day. lol. It needs an update though. There are so many new products on the market and styling tools and styles...etc.
Interesting. I will be reading that book now. I had heard a little about Andre and his hair typing system but I was not completely informed. I am really curious now about what exactly is being said in that book , as I dont believe in hair typing anyway. Im about to go find that book.
I highly encourage folks to read it for themselves. I recommend that folks check it out at their library because now there are quite few new books specifically written about natural hair care management on the market.
another great video. I also am impressed and thankful that you take the time to "chapter" the vid in the sidebar. Even though I hang on to every word! But I'm sure it will be useful when i come back to it.
I learned the chapter technique from the Skorpion Show. He does it sometimes, but I gotta do it ALL the time, just so you all know that I plan to make a point in all the rambling. lol!
Hi "Kimmay" WOW i just got this same exact book from a thrift store in my area for only .50 cents. I've just started to read it too. Thanks for sharing! "smile"
