  • What if our ENTIRE WORLD could become unified (I do not mean "one world government" just unified), if all wars could end and all the nations of the world were to work together to further science and exploration. Alma would be like one "hole in the wall" noodle store in Chinatown compared to how much science infrastructure there would be!

  • Bien por Chile, tenemos los cielos mas limpios del mundo, ideal para la observación astronómica.

  • (ALMA) is an international partnership between Europe, North America, East Asia and the Republic of Chile.

  • Chile <3!

  • shitty green screen

i want some fucking production value!

    dammit

  • Bien por Chile, America y el mundo.

El norte chileno se ha convertido en el principal observador del universo, eso gracias a sus cielos limpios y sin humedad.

  • Amazing what science can do for our understanding of ourselves & our place in the infinate universe.

  • AMAZING technology that giant red thing!...

..oh wait, that's his jacket 0_O

  • .... but it isn't the driest place on earth - antarctica is. It hasn't rained (or snowed) there for thousands of years

  • But Antarticas ground is covered with ice. Also in the summer, the ice melts, and in the winter it freezes. So there must be water in the air.

  • cool beans

  • The Dr. J reminds me a little of a younger Gordon Freeman.

  • lol that is some pretty obvious green-screening

  • tell me about it. the joke at 4:04 was super lame

  • well in there, you have less oxygen.

  • Great video, thanks for sharing. I can't wait to see where this project leads. =)

  • Dr. J (aka real name): you're blue-screened and that jacket doesn't fool anyone...

    Nice try though.

  • I don't know much about video recording, but was wondering if it was screened. Everything far and near was just too in focus :)

I enjoyed the view anyways, both ups and downs.

  • "who the fuck has that much money to spend in the name of science"

Yeah, we should spend our money on important stuff, like invading and occupying countries which pose no real threat to us or anybody else.

  • i apologize if you thought i meant it in a cynical manner. i'm a huge fan of what they are doing. but getting all the materials, THAT many satelites, the crew, the conditions, the upkeep. you gotta wonder, right?

  • @mistergarth NO, what we REALLY need to spend the money on is the WAR ON DRUGS. We MUST get rid of any substances politicians and the pharmaceutical companies do not approve of! And dont forget BAILOUTS for irresponsible banks! That is way more important than this telescope!

  • It's probably "only" a week's worth of money spent in Iraq.

  • yeah, i hope they find something useful. still, could you imagine writing up the grant for a project like this? And in conclusion, this 350 million dollar project will...

  • Yeah, but I guess this means that there are smart people in charge of the money too.

  • 350 million is more like a DAY in Iraq, brother

  • @clerlic thats likely, i wish the uk would becomg even more involved with esa, atm they are sought of scratching on the edges

  • yeah, nice jacket, right?

  • Great post!

  • Thanks for posting FFreeThinker.

  • Science is interesting and if you don't agree, you can fuck off. : )

  • Hahaha I love the jacket in the desert.

  • the desert can be a lot colder than you think...

especially in the morning... and in winter

  • Of course.. Thanks for pointing it out:)

  • Yes, true. But on 1.57 you can see the heat haze in the background. Furthermore the observatory dishes are lit differently than he is. He is superimposed on the background.

  • I know that :))

I was merely stating out, that people would most certainly wear such jackets in the desert, in winter, at such height :)

  • He may have worn the right jacket for tha region, but since this video was made in a studio, he still felt quiet warm I guess.

  • Wonderful video; thank you! (smile)

  • Haha, the oxygen comment at the end was hilarious. :)

  • i thought Antarctica was the driest place on earth

  • Yeah, but when you take off your gloves and take some snow on your palms, they will get wet.

  • well of coarse.. but isn't dryness measured by the amount of rain fall.. and very little rain has fallen in some parts of Antarctica for many centuries

  • Antartica is the largest(in sq km) desert.

  • There is no snow in the dry valley region of Antartica.

  • "And now I need some oxigen, This blue screen has really taken it out of me."

    Nice video. ^_^
