You can make it fully automated, but there wouldn't be a cart return. Why not have pistons crush the minecart and all of the items will fall into a transport, then you just have to pick them up

How do youget the minecart with a furnace to keep moving? I right click it and it only moves if I hold right mouse button and my cursor is on it AND it is in range.
