This is probably my favorite cut from The Wall. I really don't like the movie version of this tune b/c of the socio-political bent. Every culture throughout history has been "in search of more and more and more..." not just England or, for that matter, America. Although I think he alludes more to the warped vision of the Third Reich, in modern times it's been the Germans, Japanese, Russians, and [now] the Chinese building their industrial-military complexes for the purpose of expansion.
The song is meant to be part of the story... Despite common belief, very little of the wall was about society as a whole or anything like that, it was simply a story semi based off Waters' own experiences. and semi made up.
@Grunge00125 Yes, that is true, and based in part on his being the son of a WWII veteran who was killed in action at Anzio, and in part based on Syd Barrett's insanity, and of course his own experiences. However, he is still addressing the notion of an Imperialist England and the Imperialism of the West in this scene, but as I said before, he is not being mutually exclusive; he is addressing Man's inhumanity toward man. There's no mistaking the metaphors in this film.
Although I did miss the experimental type stuff they did before Animals. Actually I think it was more of before Dark Side of the Moon when they were truly experimental(Dark side was psychedelic but not experimental in the way that their old stuff was). Best concept album ever(not my favorite, Opeth's Still Life is my favorite but the wall is the best in terms of musically and lyrically) but not my favorite floyd album. But that's just me.
@Grunge00125 Will certainly agree with you on that!!! Personally I didn't really like the experimental stuff before Dark Side all that much except Meddle, which they said was a departure and a push toward more structured songwriting as opposed to just freeform jamming -- the early stuff was def. written with live performance in mind.. Animals is a great record in and of itself too -- I actually like it almost as much as Dark Side, but for me it all came together on Dark Side Of The Moon.
Personally I liked Animals a lot :) Dark side bothers me: I only like a few songs from it :( And I love Rush!!!! Same with rush though, I like their old Epic stuff, lol. Although Counterparts(the only album other than Snakes and Arrows that i've heard after 1980 in Rush's collection) is fantastic. I own Spirit of the Radio(greatest hits), Counter Parts, Caress of Steel, and Dif. Stages(live album). my friend got his first paycheck and bought almost every album so i've heard a lot of their stuff.
@Grunge00125 Yup, Alex broke out the Les Paul's, Marshall's (or Hughes & Kettner's in his case) and the old doublenecks & ES 145 for Counterparts. But everything they did in the 80's was exceptional because they put their own stamp on how they approached the use of synths and the songwriting is second to none, plus Geddy became a much better singer.
@Grunge00125 Also, a sort of "best of" or compilation album called Relics is great - that one features Syd at his best & has almost none of more psychedelic stuff unless you want to call the tunes themselves "psychedelic" which many people in fact did. As I said, Meddle was a decidedly "less psychedelic" record & in a way, one of their admirers, Rush, did the same thing by departing from the "concept" albums with the release of Permanent Waves in 1979. I highly recommend ALL of Rush's catalog.
And Relics is the album that got me into Pink Floyd: my cousin played it while I was at his house once a long time ago and after that I bought Animals and Saucerful(i know, two completely different spectrums of pink floyd, lol). Idk, it seems I always like band's older stuff(except Dream Theater and Led Zep, both of which I like their later albums more)
@kibbles1053 I had to miss it last year because of prior commitments, which was really depressing.. especially when my friends who went to the concert rubbed it in my face.. BUT! lo and behold, he's coming back to my city in July and I got my tickets as soon as they went on sale!! I can't wait!!
i hate when people say roger was pink floyd or that david was pink floyd, pink floyd was a band, and they need each other to be pink floyd, get over it
@HappyInsaneBicho I know that is exactly what i have been saying to everyone who has said that, I go and watch Rogers and Davids solo videos and everyone keeps saying that one of them is Pink Floyd.
@HappyInsaneBicho thats why on roger's tour (i saw it and it was so epic :DDDD) it was called ROGER WATERS THE WALL 2010 TOUR. Not PINK FLOYD THE WALL 2010 TOUR. just sayin
Dude.....PINK FLOYD broke up in 1995...... Roger wrote a very large portion of the Wall, so legally he is allowed to tour it. Gilmour gave him rights to perform Young Lust and Comfortably Numb. (In addition....Roger wanted Gilmour to do the tour with him (because he likes the way Gilmour performs his two songs), but Gilmour refused because of the troubles and the rift between Waters and the rest of the band).
@hydrake wait woah woah woah. PINK FLOYD broke up soon after THE WALL came out. 1983 to be exact. And roger wrote every song in the wall, David only HELPED write those 2 songs. i dont know who told you they broke up in '95, or who said gilmour wrote those on his own. again, its called ROGER WATERS THE WALL 2010. not pink floyd the wall 2010. ok?
You're referring to the point in time in which Roger left the band. Gilmour, Wright, and Mason continued writing albums.....Have you ever heard of Pink Floyd - The Division Bell?????? Or how about Pink Floyd - Momentary Lapse of Reason??????
There's a reason the original album The Wall has the name Pink Floyd on it. FYI: in the album slipsheet, Gilmour's name is listed before Waters' name in Comfortably Numb and Run Like Hell...
@hydrake okay, clearly you think you know everything about pink floyd you fucking asshole.
DAVID GILMOUR used the name for all of those albums after The Wall came out.
and for the 2nd time, David HELPED write those 2 songs!!!!! if you look on the album sheet as you said you've looked at (not carefully enough) it says that David assisted in writing those songs!!!!
What are you talking about when you say, "used the name"??? Don't you mean David Gilmour, Richard Wright, and Nick Mason continued the band??? Just because Roger leaves doesn't mean the band isn't Pink Floyd anymore.
Also....you'll notice that the style of the songs, "Young Lust", "Comfortably Numb", and "Run Like Hell" are drastically different than anything else on the album.....this is because Gilmour was the principal....
....writer of those songs. He was assisted by Waters.
Specifically, Waters and Gilmour both agree that they co-wrote "Young Lust" together.
"While most songs on The Wall were written by Waters alone, most of the music for "Comfortably Numb" was written by David Gilmour, who originally recorded the instrumental demo during the latter stages of recording his first solo album, hoping to find some later use for it. Gilmour later brought his demo of it to The Wall sessions."
"The music was written by David Gilmour (one of the three songs on The Wall for which Gilmour wrote music), while the lyrics were solely by Roger Waters. Waters provides the vocals (except for "Run, Run", in which Gilmour is lead singer)."
Essentially...don't fucking act like you're the biggest hot shot ever. You're probably a 13 year old neckbeard from bumfuck nowhere who think's Comfortably Numb is the story of your life.
@hydrake oh my god, this is why america is a fucking shithole. NO im not 13 and IM THE TROLL?! WTF DUDE?! YOU JUST PROVED YOURSELF WRONG WITH THIS FUCKING COMMENT YOU FUCKING RETARD!!!! and in your other comments that you posted at random MAKE NO FUCKING SENSE!!! DO YOU EVEN OWN THE ALBUM?! if anything youre fucking 11 yrs old and you just discovered all these 1980s bands. Suck a dick you faggot. and btw, when you post different comments, make sure you keep that 1 opinion dumbass.
@AfternoonProductions I did keep one opinion. You're just freaking out because you don't have any information to back yourself up with.
Btw, I have a lot of Pink Floyd albums. I have: Animals, Atom Heart Mother, Dark Side of the Moon, Division Bell, Momentary Lapse, The Wall (The demo version which was the first ever run through of the album before practicing the album and recording it for release), The Wall (production release), Wish You Were Here, and a bunch of live albums you don't have.
@AfternoonProductions Also....dude...wtf??? Pink floyd isn't just an 80s band....if anything it's a 70s band.... I mean...in reality they were monumentally active during the late 60s, through the 90s....
its fuckheads like you who really piss me the fuck off. FIRST OFF: I could care less that you own a few PF albums i don't care if you own every single one! NO ONE CARES AND THAT DOESN'T PROVE ANYTHING.
Those probably arent even your albums, they're PROBABLY your dads, and you, being the 11 yr old you are, rummaged through them looking for pink floyd.
2ND PROBLEM: I gave an example of a year PF was monumental. Yes, very clever of you to look on good ol'....
@hydrake wikipedia, "in reality they were monumentally active during the late 60s, through the 90s...." wow, very clever of you to go on a shitty website like that. im surprised you know all this YOU FUCKFACE. god all you asshole trolls are all the same. THEN YOU CALL ME A TROLL!?!!?! wtf/!??!!?dude!? srsly, go crawl back to your little hole and kill yourself douchebag
The tour that is going on right now is called "Roger Waters: The Wall" because he is the only member of Pink Floyd who is doing the tour.....if Mason or Gilmour were with him for the entire tour, they would be calling the act Pink Floyd....as they had several years ago for the Live 8 benefit concert....
if you read through the comments, i love how u just randomly put in your little retarded comment after i was saying how cool Pink Floyd is. Honestly, no one said a damn thing about them breaking up, so u just jumped in like "OH, wait, my daddy said they broke up here!"
lol, telling me to stfu won't work. It's the internet. Clearly I have made your pants wet. I'm not a troll, and I'm not a little boy; it may be funny, but I'm probably older than you, and obviously, I can keep my temper better than you can.
I started out by saying what I did because you made it sound like they're calling the tour Roger Waters' tour because it was his album. That didn't sit well with me because it's not true, so I set out to straighten things up.
someone who holds an argument for over a month? srsly dude? go fuck yourself"
This is incredibly funny, because you just continued the argument. I was done, because I am a busy man. I can't be bothered to argue with numbskulls like you who don't know recognizably historical events.
@hydrake if u didnt notice, about 3 weeks ago, right about ur comment, u saw that i said "ok then, and by "straightening things up" you made matters worse... so why not drop it now?" right? so why do u continue the argument on your channel. From a comment made over a month ago?
Just because Waters departed from the band in 1983 after finishing The Final Cut, doesn't mean that the band broke up. Gilmour and the rest of the band mates kept the name up until 1995 when the entire band officially split up and called it quits.
I stopped talking to you, because I have important work to do, which has nothing to do with dumbfucks like yourself. I don't have free time to go around whacking off like you apparently do. And yes, your channel does suck. Just because the guys in my dorm get overly excited about Madden, doesn't mean that my channel is instantly shit. Have some respect for your elders.
After this, I'm not going to respond to your idiotic attempts at half-assed trolling. You clearly have some mental setback which keeps you from accepting defeat. I feel sorry for you. Good day, sir.
@AfternoonProductions lol you think just cause you deleted your comment means I won't see it...
"@hydrake jesus....christ.....

You're both right and you're both wrong. Later in the years it got to the point where either Roger or David were in control, but it was never always one or the other. The Wall might have been Roger Waters, but The Division Bell was a huge Gilmour effort and was a very good album.
This is how I see it, and I've loved Pink Floyd since I was born. But Roger gave it the psychedelic touch while David gave it the best guitar riffs that band could ever have, and were would our music be if this band never paved the road for this style of music!?
@davidgilmourrocks01 So true... those are things I wish almost every time I hear music from that era and before. The musical industry these days is saturated in a way that nothing really is innovative anymore...
Pink Floyd for ever, and it will be as far as I'm concerned!!
there were 2 parts of empty spaces. part 1 is the record part the segeu's into young lust. the second part is the part we hear now, that segue's into what shall we do now
i think it talks about all the things he's lost, like his wife, and he doesnt know what to do with the Now empty spaces. That's why he lists things to try to fill them like buying new guitar.
I can never remember which is which, but originally the song that they played live (like in this video) was supposed to come between Goodbye Blue Sky and Young Lust, with the other appearing later on side two. But late in the game, after the lyric sheets had already been finalized, they decided to drop the first song, and move the second one (which I think was originally supposed to segue into Another Brick Part 3) up and have it segue into Young Lust.
its actually about roger waters hatred of women, notice how the big flower (representing women) gets bigger and bigger and sooner or later takes over the small flower (representing roger or men in general)
i dunno, i think it might be more about some old love or something cuz right after this is young lust which is what he's gonna use to "fill the empty spaces where they used to talk"... i don't know the true reason but that's what i think
Seriously his real name is Peter. He thinks he is a dictator named Pink and his concerts are his speeches...... If you watch the movie the part where he is by the train tracks with his friends his friend yells at him and yells "PETER!!!!"
That was a mistake made by whoever compiled the track listing. The official title really is "What Shall We Do Now?" Look it up on Wikipedia if you don't believe me.
Yeah, on the CD it is, but really the real version of Empty Spaces is on the studio version. This really IS "What Shall We Do Now?" Whoever did the track listing on the CD is WRONG. People seem to think that this is the intro "What Shall We Do Now?" but it isn't.
I personally know of many people, including me, who would like to build some kind of wall in their heads, just like Pink. Listening to the Wall prevents me from doing it.

@hydrake if u didnt notice, about 3 weeks ago, right about ur comment, u saw that i said "ok then, and by "straightening things up" you made matters worse... so why not drop it now?" right? so why do u continue the argument on your channel. From a comment made over a month ago?
AfternoonProductions 1 year ago
@AfternoonProductions
Just because Waters departed from the band in 1983 after finishing The Final Cut, doesn't mean that the band broke up. Gilmour and the rest of the band mates kept the name up until 1995 when the entire band officially split up and called it quits.
hydrake 1 year ago
@AfternoonProductions
Have some respect for your elders.
hydrake 1 year ago
@hydrake ok, so its ok for u to defend ur channel but when i do it im a troll?
yeah, that makes sense...
AfternoonProductions 1 year ago
@AfternoonProductions
After this, I'm not going to respond to your idiotic attempts at half-assed trolling. You clearly have some mental setback which keeps you from accepting defeat. I feel sorry for you. Good day, sir.
hydrake 1 year ago
@AfternoonProductions lol you think just cause you deleted your comment means I won't see it...
"@hydrake jesus....christ.....
its fuckheads like you who really piss me the fuck off.

@omarmhalilovic So every other member contributed many songs, look at older albums. They are all good musicians deal w/ it.

You're both right and you're both wrong. Later in the years it got to the point where either Roger or David were in control, but it was never always one or the other. The Wall might have been Roger Waters, but The Division Bell was a huge Gilmour effort and was a very good album.
vyper2112 5 months ago
@HappyInsaneBicho

Pink Floyd for ever, and it will be as far as I'm concerned!!

i think it talks about all the things he's lost, like his wife, and he doesnt know what to do with the Now empty spaces. That's why he lists things to try to fill them like buying new guitar.

I love how on the studio version of The Wall, this song goes right into Young Lust.
THEWRESTLEMANIAC 2 years ago 2
actually it goes into "what shall we do now" and then THAT goes into "young lust"
ininadanewyoker 2 years ago
Hm, I didn't think, "What Shall We Do Now," was on the album? I could be mistaken I guess.
BigDaddyRyz 2 years ago 2
yeah i never said that it was an album
YeahImWooody 2 years ago
no what shall we do now is not on the studio album but it's on the live album
dah16121986 2 years ago
I can never remember which is which, but originally the song that they played live (like in this video) was supposed to come between Goodbye Blue Sky and Young Lust, with the other appearing later on side two. But late in the game, after the lyric sheets had already been finalized, they decided to drop the first song, and move the second one (which I think was originally supposed to segue into Another Brick Part 3) up and have it segue into Young Lust.

What Shall We Do Now was not on the album
pishposh11 2 years ago
"what shall we do now?" wasn't on the album, ''empty spaces'' goes into ''young lust''

actually it goes into young lust and what shall we do now is later in the album
''what shall we use to fill the empty spaces''

david gilmour is good at hitting that high note of his solo at the perfect moment, when the one flower penetrates the other
editedfuckedup 2 years ago 4
this is one of my favourite songs on the wall. it is really the finale of Pink's sanity. it is actually such a scary song.
Jeffodious 2 years ago 4
This has been flagged as spam show
its actually about roger waters hatred of women, notice how the big flower (representing women) gets bigger and bigger and sooner or later takes over the small flower (representing roger or men in general)
DarkSoul929Productio 2 years ago
i dunno, i think it might be more about some old love or something cuz right after this is young lust which is what he's gonna use to "fill the empty spaces where they used to talk"... i don't know the true reason but that's what i think
ridethesky1 2 years ago
yeah this song is called empty spaces and thecharmanator is right he yells pinky
guitarhero691 3 years ago
Seriously his real name is Peter. He thinks he is a dictator named Pink and his concerts are his speeches...... If you watch the movie the part where he is by the train tracks with his friends his friend yells at him and yells "PETER!!!!"

wowser77 3 years ago
ya it is if you look on the live album which comes from this show
its labled empty spaces
and the next song is what shall we do now?
packfan2929 3 years ago
That was a mistake made by whoever compiled the track listing. The official title really is "What Shall We Do Now?" Look it up on Wikipedia if you don't believe me.
RockWarrior97 3 years ago
what shall we do now is a separate track
fIagg 3 years ago
Yeah, on the CD it is, but really the real version of Empty Spaces is on the studio version. This really IS "What Shall We Do Now?" Whoever did the track listing on the CD is WRONG. People seem to think that this is the intro "What Shall We Do Now?" but it isn't.
RockWarrior97 3 years ago
no...this is empty spaces. what shall we do now is the track that starts "shall we buy a new guitar?..."

I personally know of many people, including me, who would like to build some kind of wall in their heads, just like Pink. Listening to the Wall prevents me from doing it.

fucking awesome flanger on the bass, royal delay on the voice, great song
mar77a 4 years ago 3
I could swear it's a Phaser, sounds more to Small Stone by Electro Harmonix than MXR.
Could be a combination of both flanger and phaser too.
Gilmour mainly used an Electric Mistress flanger pedal from Electro Harmonix for this tour and album.
Cheersª
