Actually, that is how cats "growl". It's to warn each other to back off. They'll freeze and growl for a very long time before they show their fangs and fight with claws.

Having lots of male cats - especially adult cats who haven't been neutered can cause problems like this. Female cats are a trifle more social - but you need to give them time to smell each other out - if they don't take to each other, rubbing one cat's scent on the other will help.
