  • The first time I heard Sancious was on One more car one more rider by Eric Clapton, where he plays the Hammond as well as using the breath controller. I love the sound that it makes, so soothing. Try to watch his solo on Wonderful Tonight and reptile, sooo good!

I always love the first time you listen to something new it blows one away every time.

  • Huge AAA talent. Doesn't get any better than DS

  • I remeber david sancious from yrs agi in NYC WRVR, A Great Jazz,, Jazz Rock , Fusion Station,,, Oh How I Miss Those day. David Sancoius is one of the Greats. Pease Mkae ans release more music . The Worlds Needs it,,, K

  • Still one of my favorite musicians of all. Thank you David. Love your work

  • david ist einfach nur der hammer…

  • Fantastic stuff. I love the sounds David makes. I've always been particularly fond of the work he did with Sting along with Dominic Miller and Vinnie Colaiuta. Those four musicians are the perfect combination and I was delighted when they reformed a couple of years ago and that they've continued to play various one-off shows since. I often wonder what a new album from the four of them would sound like now - I'm sure it'd be brilliant, just as Ten Summoner's Tales was.

  • Jeff: True musical passion, genius, and beauty. A thousand thanks for preserving that night and for posting some of it here. DS completely transcends genre. If you are his biggest fan then I've been standing right behind you since '76. Best of luck with your documentary project.

  • INCREDIBLE!!! :)

  • I am so glad I found this along time ago a guitar palyer I knew turned me on to you I had a copy on vinyl of the bridge, I love this performance.

  • @boingboomchak Glad you enjoyed it! David and Joe gave an exceptionally fine performance that night and we were thrilled to be able to capture it.

  • @boingboomchak

Check out David Sancious playing with Francis Dunnery in the UK on a song

titled 'Riding on the Back'. the live concert in Bush Hall, London is the best

posted so far occurred in September of 2010.

  • Just saw them play this today outside at Opus 40, near Woodstock, with the Opus 40 sculpture and the Catskills alongside on a perfect summer day. Ahhhhhhh..............

  • I love this performance.

  • David is not only an amazing musician, but also an incredible person to boot. So is Joe - truly amazing guys... David has played a few songs on my upcoming album, (Joe is producing) and I can say WITHOUT A SHADOW OF A DOUBT that he is a MASTER at his craft. AND JOE - my god can Bonadio play... seamless and together - they really create. It is a pleasure and an honour to know these people.

  • I saw David perform last night (6\27\2010) and all I can say is that he has been touched by God.

  • tuktuktok...

The entire set was videotaped. Three songs from the set were edited and a small run of DVDs were created for David. These DVDs were sold only at his live appearances. At this time there are no plans to release the other songs from that concert. I'm glad you like the video, we enjoyed making it! - Jeff

  • @jknappster

I have noticed that many of my favorites come from you. Great job and thank you.

  • This is so beautiful!!!!!!!!! Love David, and how about Joe Bonadio on drums? Great performance from both of them.

  • Sir, did you record any other songs they played during this concert or are there only two? Is this available on a dvd or cd album? Thank you for capturing well beautiful music and sharing it.

  • This song is awesome, especially the spacey, middle part of it. This is the first time I have heard David Sancious music; it was worth it.

  • Wow, just wow! Both of them are *brilliant*!

  • maybe someone can help me. I'm looking for a special version of "Wonderful Tonight" from Eric Clapton. He and David Sancious are performing together, theres a really cool solo from David in there but I can't seem to find the video no more :( There is one video of the two performing this song but that's not the one... any ideas? It turns into a reggae-like style and then David starts a great solo... man I wanna hear it again

  • yeah it called eric clapton - wonderful tonight with subtitles, thats whats its listed as enjoy

  • Watch this video in a new windowEric Clapton - Wonderful Tonight (with subtitles)

  • Dave Sancious rules! Loved him eversince I first saw him playing on the Sting soul cages tour.

  • Jeff!!!

Our MIX is back in "Stereo" again here on YouTube!!! (((YES!!!)))

~Still remembering how much FUN we had recording this Live DVD/Video this with David & Joe.... Awesome Times!

  • This guy is one of the most underrated musicians I've ever heard. He's bloody fantastic.

  • Try Rare Bird Records for releases of this on CD

  • What a performance. An enormous pity that the album "The Bridge" is a rarity these days. So hard to find and very expensive. Reprint it PLEASE!

  • how did I miss this show since i live not far on the jersey shore.his first album FOREST OF FEELINGS is magical but out of print-Of course you all know that David was on the first two springsteen albums-outstanding!!

  • I love you Uncle David

  • Hey I am a hudge fan of your uncle-I saw him at the bottom line in nyc early 70's. he even played guitar at that show. ask him how i can get copies of FOREST OF FEELINGS & TRANSGRESSIONS since his official web site sezs thy are out of print!

  • He's really your uncle?

  • remember when we used to go down to willie's burgers, down on 16th street, a listen to him play the piano in the church next door?

    aw man...good times.

    i'm his mom, btw.

  • What a great surprise! I saw David Sancious and Tone live in the 70's at New Paltz College in upstate New York, and it was magical! I remembered feeling that all things were possible when I listened to his music. It appeared that he left the scene. I continued to buy his albums (no CD's at the time) but I could not find where he was playing live. Thanks to YouTube, this video brings it all back!! I found my magical youth through this music and it has nothing to do with my age!

    Thanks David

  • Jeff,

    Yup... It's Still Awesome!

  • Mesmerizing....

  • what great chemistry , they sound great together , and i love davids work with sting , hes amazing , such great music to listen too , this song is great , very sooting

  • One of my big influences. a great paino player and composer. he knows how to fuse jazz, rock , classical and gospel into all of his music. A great understanding of harmony and counterpoint. He also is a rocker, I saw him play guitar with Jack bruce, Billy cobham and clem clemson.

  • Hey Jeff! Thanks for posting David's video! He has always been an inspiration to me. Any hints on where I may be able to purchase his entire David Sancious & Tone Discography?

I had a few of these albums but they were stolen my last year of college (1986) -

Thanks again for the Video! I got chills all over again hearing and finally seeing David play! WOW what a composer and player!

    Bill Rebsamen

  • I still listen to his 1978 recording "True Stories" and it still rocks my chakras. We played "Again" (the instrumental version) from "Just As I Thought" as our wedding theme. Get these, and "The Bridge".

  • How are you calling this Instrument, that Sancious is playing? (I mean not the Keyboard alone)

  • David is using a breath controller - a MIDI triggering device, connected to his Yamaha MOTIF synthesizer that enables him to create additional sounds (other than the primary sound event) when any key is played. When David plays certain notes on the keyboard AND blows on the mouthpiece simultaneously, the device triggers an event. It senses when he is blowing, the velocity of his breath, and when he stops.

  • @MaksymLos Among other applications, the breath controller also let's you mimick the slight nuances of say a saxophone, trumpet, or flute controlling the brightness, contour and natural vibrato of a certain sound much like a flute or sax player would and adds to the realism of mimicked wind intrument patches.

  • David Sancious is a brilliant musician. I only relatively recently discovered his music, but had heard his work with Sting before. He is monumentally talented and has great taste.

  • Pure musical magic.

  • David Sancious is a national treasure.

  • God I wish he stayed with Bruce....

  • This is so beautiful.

DS is clearly in the Sting / Wally Badarou family.

And also: that man radiates happiness.

  • So I wonder if you could tell him he would be very welcome to Rio Brazil. beautifully documented

    cheers,

    Lui

  • Yes, I was producer for this shoot as well as one of the cameramen. David does not currently have a "formal Band". He plays solo, plays duet with various drummers and plays as a trio, typically with bassists Tony Levin or Jeff Allen. I'm visiting David this week and I'll let him know you'd like him to come to India!

    Jeff

  • how old would this concert be??

  • We taped this on December 2, 2005.

  • beautifull spiritual mood and mind too i love it,thank's dave... vanny66

  • Glad you liked it. It was a great night, for David and for my crew too. We had a blast making it.

    Jeff

  • I have admired this guys work for many years (even with Springsteen).I am looking for audio/video of a particular song called "Sky Church Hymm #9". Can't recall the album. Late 70's early 80's. It's his tribute to Jimi Hendrix and Elmore James. My God!! I think he plays everything on the track except for drums, and it is a phenominal composition. Any help would be appreciated :)

  • My friend, I was wondering if anyone in this huge green and blue planet would ever acknowledge this song. I happen to have a cd of transformation, "The speed of love" I grew up on this album. And to this day play the shit out of it. Hardly a better album will ever be made. You can get a copy from wounded bird records.A hard to get odd ball company that had the cd. Gerald Carbouy plays bass. Smooth sailing to you!!

  • Thank you THANK YOU! I played the shit out of this as well but no longer have it. There are other great tracks on this album but the intensity of SCH#9 is unbelievable. From the slow foot stomp Daddy "E" blues intro to the shredding seemingly endless guitar runs that even Jimi couldn't touch, and I mean NO disrespect to Jimi!! And wasn't he like 20 years old at the time?? DAMN!! I'm a musician, and love musicians music (you know what I mean) and SCH#9 is DEFINITELY musicians music. Later,B.

  • The whole album reeks of talent. Not a bad spot anywhere!!! By the way, I know what you mean, I play bass guitar.

  • Cool! Been playing since i was 10. Started on guitar and drums then discovered jazz/Stanley Clarke in early 70's and switched to bass. Bass and vocals in bands in 70-80's. Now I mostly play acoustic/electric and banjo along with keyboards and lap-steel. I'm trying to learn fiddle (HARD!). Now and again I drag out my OLD P-bass (30+yrs)and give it a good thumping. Arthritis and lack of playing have slowed me down, but I can still kick it! What do you play?

  • Very nice. I tended to like his group efforts rather than his solo ones. True Stories is one of my favorites; while less fusionistic than the earlier albums, it has great compositions and production values. Plus he is one heck of a guitar player too !

  • Yes indeed, The vocals on true stories mixed with the instruments is a spine chilling experience. Extremely passionate.

  • Amazing David performance! David is an incredible player and few people can match his expressivity

  • hey a lot of people dont know about the great fusion pioneers of the 70 and 80s david sancious was one of them he played with the stanley on school days album lenny white venesian summer album narada micheal walden the sun is dancing ,his solo albums was awsome trasformation and the speed of love, forest of feelin, the name of his group back in the day was david sanciuos and tone with earnest carter on drums and gerald colby on bass they was a trio play more of this awsome musician..

  • very true , alot of people dont know. David Sancious is the reason I began the piano (playing & writing) His music never tiers or grows old.

  • I would love to see more of this!!!!

  • LOVE IT

  • Lovely work. I'd love to hear that there was a commercial DVD available. Any news? We are discussing this in two threads at the keyboard communities at musicplayer (KC) and harmony central(KSS).

    Cheers,

    Jerry

  • Thanks for sharing. That was a brilliant performance. I haven't heard of him before...I must look him up...

where can i find this DVD?

  • Geno ...

There would have been NONE of this without your initial recommendations, and then your unbelievable execution that night in the truck. Without that incredible jump-start, this project would not be where it is today. I will never be able to thank you enough for your contributions ... In all the shows we've taped of David's since then I've never heard anybody capture his sound better than you guys did that night. That's the truth.

    Jeff

  • What A Great Night!!! I had a ball recording & mixing this live concert 'on the fly' in the "Indre Digital Remote Truck", with David Sancious and Joe Bonadio live on stage, and Jeff Knapp, Rob Naggy, Marty Lindley, Joe Graeff & Brian Cloud on cameras with a incredible crew of talented people with us, behind us... and in the audience.... a great performance... (Thank You, Jeff!)

And Yup, I am simply honored to be a part of this one...

    Gene Leone - Gene_Leone_Mix

  • great stuff,I could watch this video again and again

great work and such passion from the musicians, pink floyd at live 8 is the only thing that comes close

  • 'DROID ...

Thanks again. Yeah, David is all about passion! This is not a "flashy" video, visually; we deliberately kept it simple, deciding to let the music, and the players' emotion do the talking... and I think that comes through loud and clear.

I'll probably be posting more video clips from this concert ... stay tuned...

  • Is this from a commercial video or a teaser for something planned? I have been searching unsuccessfully for years for *any* video of David in the Tone days; all I have is VHS tape of him with Sting from a PBS show that was never released for sale. I would definitely want this performance in its entirety.

  • Is there any video from the speed of love days or true stories. I am a huge 30 year david sancious fan.

  • Growl,

Sadly, there doesn't seem to be... video from those days is The Holy Grail and I've been looking for it for David's documentary ... so far, no dice. I have interviewed all members of Tone - Gerald Carboy and Boom Carter, and they report the same thing. David has told me that he doesn't recall there being any videotaping or filming being done back in the day. Oh well.

  • Thanks Mixey. I couldn't agree more. I not only got to work with one of my very favorite artists that night - there was a lot of magic working, and on a number of levels. I'm grateful to David and everyone who participated in this beautiful team effort. The results speak for themselves.

  • Awesome !!

I love how David and Joe interact so beautifully. You very rarely experience this intimate a performance.

    Beautifully done from all aspects!
