Hi Allison! Watching this video has really made me want to start running too :D but I'm a little worried about lactic acid build up and getting really sore muscles. Does this happen to you?? And if so, what do you do to deal with it?
totally bizarre that the insole sales people were pushing the wrong size... my running store guys are awesome and always trim my new insoles for me so they fit my shoes perfectly.
I used to be a runner a long time ago and I gave it up because I lost my inspiration. Thanks to your videos I just found it again and I am off on my first run tomorrow morning! Wish me luck =)
I can't wait for your next gear vlog on what to wear. I recently joined a gym (I have no intent on being a runner ...but I do hit up the elliptical and bike alot, I have really bad knees) and would really love to hear what you have to say about good shirts to work out in. I took your advice on the Thorlos sock and they are AMAZING. I bought a pair to try out and LOVED them. I just ordered 6 on REI.com because they were on sale for 9 bucks each!
This was a great video! I love running outside too..but I have always had leg and feet problem with super high arches so I will try insoles! Who knew? :)
Hey Allison! Love your videos! Could you do a video on the health benefits of running and if you've lost any weight?(not that you need to!) Thanks! <3
Took your word on the Asics - Runners World also ranked them the best overall running shoe. Thought I'd try something new, after being loyal to my Nike Pegasus running shoes for 3 years now. Went on Amazon, found the Asics GT2170. Got them in the mail, thought they were definitely heavier than my Nike's, but Allison & seemingly the rest of the world swears by them. Horrible...I HATE them. I gave them 3 tries on runs & I went back to my trusty Nikes. =(
can you, Fleur, and Ingrid do a meeting in la this weekend! :D would be great if it's at the grove! since Allison and Fleur live in places we can't go to. thank you! please like so they can see! :D love you guys!
Hey Allison, just wanted to reiterate how important getting properly fitted is. I'm more of a gym person (hate the treadmill though) and after years of dancing and sport thought that overuse was the reason I have knee and ankle problems but in fact I needed insoles due to my arches. Girls, don't worry about how pretty the shoe is definitely go for confort and function!!
Can you please do a video about warming up before and cooling down after a run? You inspired me to make a new year resolution to start running :) I'm going out for my first run now =]]
can you talk about skiing? you've talked about night skiing before, and i was wondering if you could just talk about how you started, your experience, etc. :)
can you do a video on vegetarianism? I love hearing peoples reasons for going vegetarian (health, religious, environment, animal welfare etc.) as well as how hard it was for you to transition into the change. I know that when I first went vegetarian i was craving hot dogs like mad! Which is weird because i had never really eaten them very much before!
I am a runner on my high school cross country team and I love your videos! Could you do some more videos on your favorite running gear clothes-wise and also maybe food you like to fuel you up? just to get more opinions from others would be great, thanks! (:
I love my Saucony Kinvara 2s! They're really minimalist and they're great. I used to use the same shoes that you did, but trust me they feel so different and so great. Studies have been done that show that shoes like Saucony and other minimalist shoes are SO much better for you. The less more added bulk and unneeded support there is, the better it is for your knees. True, you may not like them, but just give it a try!
@hopetherespudding well if it helps you stay motivated it could be great, but sometimes its not as safe since you may not being paying as much attention to cars, bikes, and other runners. i personally dont like to but its really up to you (:
Alison, THANK YOU for this awesome video! i'm actually planning to do a half marathon this year so I'll be going to get fitted for good running shoes. In the past I've just went to a store and tried them on myself without assistance. Thanks again, love this series!
love your videos... I have a question about sports bras... Which ones are good for running? How do you find a good one? I feel like no matter which ones I get my chest still moves a bunch and ends up hurting by the end of the run or work out...
Thankyou so much for the idea about socks with no cotton. I have always gotten seriously bad blisters so I bought some cotton-free socks and haven't had a blister since.
Hi there. To stay hydrated, do you run with a water bottle in your hand or do you have one of those back pack thingies with the tube coming out of it? What would you recommend? Thanks and great videos!!! I'm seriously starting to consider starting to run and at this point in my life walking more than a mile has me breaking out in a cold sweat, never mind running!!!!! Keep up the good work!!!!
Do you take anything with you for safety? like pepper spray or something? I'm thinking of starting to run, but am kinda uncomfortable about running out by myself
One more comment...hehe. Do you have any recommendations for runners with knee pain? If I run on pavement too often, my right knee swells and I can barely walk on it for a couple weeks. Every time I make a doctors appointment it disappears...surprise surprise. Am I crazy?? ahahaha
You've really inspired me. Going to spend Xmas break looking for a couch to 5k program and planning. I was really bummed thinking I wouldn't be able to do it cuz I can't afford running shoes but today I found out the gym shoes I got for hs 4 years ago (n barely used) are good running shoes asics gt 2100. Yay :)
OH MY GOSH Allison i need your help, i'm looking outside, it's pooring with rain and cold (I live in Switzerland), what do i wear to go and run without being soaked but without being too warm when I start running?
@meeee1992 the right type of shoes will help with shin splints. I used to get them all the time before I went to a running store and was fitted with the correct running shoes. I pronate, so I definitely got a stability shoe. That alone worked for me, but insoles might help you enough, or stability shoes paired with a good insole may be what you need.
Please keep doing these running vlogs! So informative and helpful for a second-time around beginner like myself. I have a suggestion for a video: although you have mentioned in other videos in the past what foods or snacks you like to eat before and after runs but you could you dedicate one video speaking about the foods/snacks/drinks that fuel you?! Thanks. :) xo.
@gorgeousmuchh179 it would be best to take bigger breaths. Also, make sure that you are hydrated. When your muscles are dehydrated they start to cramp. I used to play soccer and what helped me the most with cramps is to just drink tons of water.
I can't wait for the next videos in this series. I'm especially looking out for one about breathing because that is my huge big problem in running. I'm not sure you'll even cover my actual problem but I enjoy these videos anyhow :D
I never was a big sport fan, but now I'm starting to go to the gym and you totally convinced me to go running. I don't know if it will be a total disaster, but I don't lose anything by trying :D Just have to find a good place to go. I am not motivated with city streets lol
I am happy to see you are doing running vlogs, just from watching these gives me motivation to go out running. I love it, it is my way to meditate and it just feels so good.
I printed out your running schedule that you used, I'm going to start it soon. I'm excited! Thank you! Also, just wondering did you experience any weight loss or loss of inches with your running routine?
I really want to start running, but I actually have found that my chest and nose will start to burn. I'm not sure if it's a breathing problem, but I'll get bad cramps as well. I also never got fitted for my shoes, but I don't want to just waste that purchase - I'm wondering if they're still okay to run in until they wear out and I can go get a pair that is fitted for me?
I just found your beauty channel & thought I would check this out..... I don't run, or have any interest in it what-so-ever, and somehow you managed to keep me interested through the entire video????? Lol that is amazing (:
you are genuinely inspiring me to get into running. i'm definitely going to try and start in the new year. i'm going to look for new shoes over the holiday when i go home. what makes me nervous though, is that my feet always throb like, at the arch. it's almost like a cramp but not. that's what's scaring me from getting into running because it's really painful. that's why i've always avoided running. do you think it's probably because i don't have proper shoes?
OMG! No wonder I hated running so much when I was in track. Did I buy the right shoes? No, I bought the pretty ones. Did I know anything about insoles? No, of course not. Did I even think twice about the socks I was wearing? No way. I REALLY WANT TO GIVE THIS ANOTHER SHOT! Now I just need to save enough money to buy myself the right equipment.
So when you go on runs is it nonstop running? So for like 3 miles you won't walk to catch your breath, you just straight up run? These videos really make me want to start running! :)
@obbie87 Yeah I never stop! I don't need to walk to catch my breath because I continually keep building up my endurance so I'm never out of breath! :)
Do you think you could do a short segment on breathing? Is there a specific way to breathe? I find that I often get side cramps when running and I believe it has something to do with the way that I am breathing. Are short breaths or longer breaths better? Thanks :)
Do you shower after every run you go on? Because I hate going on a run and then having to come home and take a hour to take a shower, get dressed, do my makeup and everything again if I want to do something after my run.
Thanks for such great and inspirational running videos! I've been running a few months and having a hard time with stamina and breathing. I get a couple of miles then I'm done. Your videos are an inspriration to keep me going and trying.
Hey Allison! Just wanted to let you know that the pain you described does not fit plantar fasciitis [fash (like fashion) eee I (like eye) tiss (like rotisserie)]. Pretty good review of the shoes... I might post a video response to how this explaining the shoe categories and arch height a little bit more - stay tuned =)

I don't comment much on videos but I just have to say TY so much for this info. My sister has so much trouble with her feet and her ankles so I know this will help her. :D
hi allison, just wondering with all ankle pain and stuff you used to experience, did you ever consider going to a podiatrist to get your feet properly checked out?
You should really try the Vibram Five Finger shoes! They are the absolute best shoes to run in, I couldnt imagine running in anything else! There are actually studies that running shoes hurt your feet more than they help. You should really check them out.
I absolutely LOVE this series! Can you make an installment about breathing versus cold weather? When it's freezing outside, it is so hard for me to get out there and do my mile (starting small:) because my chest hurts so bad when I'm done and during sometimes. Is there a special mask or hat or something you use for running when it's freezing?
When I run, I get so thirsty quickly even though I stay hydrated throughout the day. I'm wondering, when you run outside, do you bring water with you, and how do you avoid getting really thirsty?
Thanks for all the info on your waterproof running shoes!! My Nike's are NOT made for any kind of slippery surface so when it rains, I'm stuck indoors.
oh goodness! I had no idea about insoles or the socks. I love running, and haven't been able to get into it since having my quadruplets because of shin splints. I am definitely going to look into both to get into running again.
its pronounces plant-R fash-ee-eye-tous (my mom's a doctor who suffers from this condition!!) Also I talked awhile ago to a running professional and i think he said to replace running shoes every 300 miles:)))
You have become like a beauty and HEALTH ambassador (which is so important)...you have inspired so many people just by sharing with us something that you love! Great job Allison! I am loving the running videos and after finals I hope to start myself!
Ahhh I can't tell you how helpful this video was!! I have narrow feet with high arches too, so everything you said clicked and made total sense! Thank you sooo much! <3
allison- thanks so much for this video. i started running a little while ago, too, and just got fitted for the same asics, except they're the gt-2160 version. do the superfeet insoles fit true-to-size (according to your running shoe size), or do you recommend going up/down a size?
You can get custom fit orthodics at the foot doctor and theyre great! They take a mold of your foot first. Good for walking shoe or runnin, back knee or ankle problems and u can also buy the show with it which is custom & has extra room for the orthodics
This video inspired me to start running again! I actually just got back from a run and now I have bags of corn on my ankles because I wore my regular tenni shoes!! Right at about mile 2 my ankles starting killing me!! I definitely need to get some new shoes!! p.s. I know what you mean about running outside without music!!
Thank you so much for this video! I have always had ankle problems & I'm currently dealing with an ankle sprain from running :-( its terrible! It's been nearly a month since I've ran. I'm going to definitely try the insoles & ice my ankles after each run! Lovely suggestions! Keep the running videos up? I'm obsessed with them :-)
@FashionPassionKathy Never! I much enjoy listening to nature and my own thoughts. I've never been an on-the-go music listener... I much prefer to just think! :)
@asvw1227 It depends how much you are using them/how many miles you are running. For me, I can tell when the stability of the shoe is starting to break down a little bit. If you run a lot, your feet will probably know when it's time for new kicks :) I've heard long distance (marathon) runners change their shoes every 3-6 months, but I don't run nearly that much, so I've been able to go about a year+ with mine.
I took your advice from your last video. A lot of times I will give up on running because my MIND freaks out, started feeling that the other day and asked myself Do my legs hurt? No. Do my arms hurt? No. Am I really feeling pain? No. It helped so much to keep going
Not a gear related question, but have you ever experienced stomach cramps when running and do you know how to prevent them? The only reason I don't run is because I always get terrible cramping and all the advice I've been given never seems to work..I've heard everything causes it from dehydration, over-hydration, not waiting long enough after eating, not breathing right, and so on and forth. I really want to try running again, but I have to fix this problem! Thanks :)
@adodds530 Stomach cramps are actually one thing I never seem to experience when running. I just make sure not eat anything right before I go (wait an hour or so), and not drink a TON of water right before I head out the door, and I'm fine. On days that I run I eat many small meals and drink water consistently throughout the day, so my stomach is never stuffed full, and I think that may help!
Do you put the insoles on top of what's already in your shoe or do you take that out before inserting the running insole? THANK YOU for that tip because I've been trying to find a way to lessen the ankle pain I've been getting with running for so long now. I am going out today to find some insoles! Thank you so much for all of this helpful and useful information!
i love these allisonruns videos :) do more! they are very inspiring :) makes me want to exercise, and i'm a person that does literally ZERO exercise. <3
I'm no runner and I'll never be, but you are so talented in making these videos that I'm sucked in and I enjoy listening to what you have to say. And I learn a lot too! You're really great! :)
Thank you for your video! I have been running and discovered my love for running for the past 5 months! I'm glad you talk about this stuff on YouTube. My sister has ankle problems and I'm going to let her watch this video we have been so perplexed about it always aching! Thank you. I'm so happy now :D
Do you use the Pose Tech method? Where you land and push off from the ball of your foot (never landing on your heel)? Once I began using that method, all pronating issues and other foot issues that running shoes are supposed to correct just went away. When your technique is natural, running is comfortable no matter what gear you use. Great video - keep them coming!
I watched your first two running videos. I used to run a lot, but ran into many of the same problems you discussed and finally gave it up. This was very informative! I may actually give it a try again! Thank you for your thorough, thoughtful video :)
LOL I was trying to explain the running cleats to my husband and he just was not following me. He needs to watch this. He would probably find this interesting too.
I am seriously thinking to start running a while now so you gave me a real good push heheheh I think I*m going for first run today ;) yo gave really good advices but I have totally differnt feet than you, but anyway you inspired me to go for it!!!!!! thanks!!love your videos!!! kisses from Croatia!!! xoxo
I'm loving this series, because I have some serious problems with running, but i really want to do it! :) Coming new years, I'm going to try starting running with the help of your tips! :) Looking forward toward the rest of the videoes and tips :) Will you do something on cross training as well? :)
I'm going to watch for insoles. Hope my foot and ankle pain will go away and maybe I will like running again. I really like your vlog's about your running experience. Keep them going please :-) you really inspire me! -3 your inspiration. Xxxx from The Netherlands.
Hi Allison! Watching this video has really made me want to start running too :D but I'm a little worried about lactic acid build up and getting really sore muscles. Does this happen to you?? And if so, what do you do to deal with it?

you are genuinely inspiring me to get into running. i'm definitely going to try and start in the new year. i'm going to look for new shoes over the holiday when i go home. what makes me nervous though, is that my feet always throb like, at the arch. it's almost like a cramp but not. that's what's scaring me from getting into running because it's really painful. that's why i've always avoided running. do you think it's probably because i don't have proper shoes?
xxjenniferr 3 months ago

obbie87 3 months ago 8
@obbie87 Yeah I never stop! I don't need to walk to catch my breath because I continually keep building up my endurance so I'm never out of breath! :)

Do you think you could do a short segment on breathing? Is there a specific way to breathe? I find that I often get side cramps when running and I believe it has something to do with the way that I am breathing. Are short breaths or longer breaths better? Thanks :)
Gorgeousmuchh179 3 months ago 66
@Gorgeousmuchh179 In through the nose and out through the mouth breathing can help with cramping. Hope that helps a little :]

I don't comment much on videos but I just have to say TY so much for this info. My sister has so much trouble with her feet and her ankles so I know this will help her. :D
hanna72861 3 months ago
hi allison, just wondering with all ankle pain and stuff you used to experience, did you ever consider going to a podiatrist to get your feet properly checked out?
tishme 3 months ago

I'm wondering, when you run outside, do you bring water with you, and how do you avoid getting really thirsty?

oh goodness! I had no idea about insoles or the socks. I love running, and haven't been able to get into it since having my quadruplets because of shin splints. I am definitely going to look into both to get into running again.

allison- thanks so much for this video. i started running a little while ago, too, and just got fitted for the same asics, except they're the gt-2160 version. do the superfeet insoles fit true-to-size (according to your running shoe size), or do you recommend going up/down a size?

How often do you have to replace your shoes?
asvw1227 3 months ago 2
@asvw1227 It depends how much you are using them/how many miles you are running. For me, I can tell when the stability of the shoe is starting to break down a little bit. If you run a lot, your feet will probably know when it's time for new kicks :) I've heard long distance (marathon) runners change their shoes every 3-6 months, but I don't run nearly that much, so I've been able to go about a year+ with mine.

Thanks :)
adodds530 3 months ago
