Their story is obviously BS. From what I've read it is a weld issue as you've stated, and they believe harmonics while the engine is running can cause it to fail. This has me worried, hopefully an oil light would alert me if it fails, but I will probably get this replaced just to be safe.
By all means take it out on the dealer, they may make no direct claims about the vehicle, but their marketing blurb tells you you're getting a sports car and not a toy, and that's for the non-STi vehicles.
SOA does not warranty anything. The dealers have to take pictures of everything. If there are any signs of use (i.e. being driven like a sports car) or aftermarket parts they won't cover anything. I think they do this to keep reliability ratings high. The dealers eventually repair your car out of warranty for some type of discounted rate. First hand experience. I recommend everyone to work with the dealer and don't take it out on them. SOA is the issue. They don't stand behind their marketing.
Who quoted me half that to rebuild my engine and informed me that the oil pick ups in the 2006 models are known to be faulty. Just spoke to Subaru and they want it assessed by a Subaru repairer (zupps). Talk about getting the run around.. grrrrr. Glad to see you got yours sorted though mate :)
just found out from my mechanic that my oil pick up had snapped too. Mine isn't an STI though, and all I had was a bov and exhaust. I took it into zupps which is also an authorised subaru retailer and they told me I had no oil pressure and my clutch was gone and it was going to cost 10,500. They also charged me $600 in labour fee's. They didn't mention the fact that the oil pick up tube had snapped though, so I took it to a recommended mechanic.
this happened to me too... 10k dollars later i got a new motor... my snapped completly off... but now i got a "killerbee" ultimate pick up oil tube... its reinforced and is made different than subaru does so it wont fail... its funny cause thats all i have done to my car too is exhaust, intake and ecu flash and my cracked lol highly moddified my ass stupid subaru
granted i dont believe it cracked because of impact. but i could see over time the metal getting weak from constant hot/cold cycles. i do agree the part was defective though! its not the first time i have heard of a cracked pickup tube
this video would be meaningless to me a few weeks ago, but after pulling my sisters sti motor and finding a cracked pickup tube this video is priceless.
Shortly after posting this video and detailing the events of the failure Subaru Australia agreed to cover all hardware costs as "a gesture of goodwill". Apparently this failure can occur in "highly modified or race cars". Mine had an aftermarket exhaust, cold air intake and ECU reflash.
Nicely done, Troy! I had TWO pick-up tubes crack! The 2nd one was only 5000 miles after the engine rebuild. For photos of my case, visit "RacingDentist-dot-com" and go to the "My Cars Page."
I believe that Subaru has a crappy way of handling their warranty anyway,,, the screwed and lied to me on a couple occassion,,, I hope you dont have to go through the same!!!!!!
This happens in dead standard 06 WRX's as well. NO mods. Broken clean and I lunched an engine as a result.
Your oil light WILL NOT ALERT YOU TO FATAL ENGINE DAMAGE
