  • Donn, everything Steven Seagal wanted to be...

  • Draegersensei ha Nihon de iroiro bujutsu no renshu o shimashita. Beikoku no heikaigunjin ga imashita. Honto ii Bujutsuka ga imashita. Mr. Daeger had studied many forms of Martial Arts in Japan. He also was a US Marine. He truely was a great Martial Artist. Thank you for this video. Osu

  • I read about him Draeger almost ten years ago. This is the first footage for me. Great clip. Semper Fi!

  • First read about Donn Draeger in a martial arts book called From Lee to Li. Great to see footage of the man who had over 100 black belts.

  • What?

  • Excellent! What a piece of footage!

  • Historical, legendary and awesome.

Material featuring Donn F. Draeger is very rare...

  • Great clip! Thanks a lot!

  • Among Western budoka Draeger was perhaps the most interesting in terms of career and personality.

  • How is Tanjo different from Hanbo?

  • Uchida ryu tanjojutsu is the art of the "English or European Walking Stick," Developed by Uchida Ryogoro, a menkyo in Shindo Muso Ryu Jodo. Uchida developed the art based on the turn of the century rage in Japan for the western walking stick. It is different from Hanbo, which is used as a cudgel and trapping device, whereas the the stick in Uchida Ryu Tanjojutsu is used primarily as a striking weapon. There are 12 basic kata in Uchida Ryu Tanjojutsu.

  • Thanks!

Physically, is there a difference in size between the Tanjo and Hanbo?

  • The Hanbo and Tanjo are virtually the same size. The difference is in the techniques, that is, their application.

  • The original walking-stick in Uchida-ryu was sort of cone-shaped: Thicker at the top and thinner at the bottom. I dont know if any SMR groups use an authentic cone-typ of stick anymore though. Maybe some does in public embu. In our group we use a regular evenly shaped 90 cm stick. I got my own stick at Bokkenshop where its simply called "3 shaku jo". The "Ninecircles" shop call it a "hanbo" but essentially its the same staff.

  • Here in SoCal, our Sensei uses a light-weight tanjo, which is just a piece of doweling available at most lumber yards in the exact right length. The lightness makes for faster use with less likelihood of injury should a slip-up happen.

  • What do we want?

More Draeger clips for the people!

    When do we want it?

    NOW! :)

  • Great to see the Uchida ryu tanjo! Even better to see footage of Mr. Draeger doing Uchida ryu!

  • Wow, thank you for posting this. It's very rare to find tanjo-jutsu media on the web. Very interesting differences between the way we practice this today and the way it was done then...

  • GREAT!

  • Awesome stuff
