I in fact HAD a similar model ST-4038 that I overvolted while attempting to run it with the cover open; a conductive portion of the PCB made a connection with the metallic (!) surface I was working on. Soon enough, I smelt burnt resistor, and the controller malfunctioned. :/
Too lazy to get a 'new' one of those Seagates, but I still have the old one as a memento of some sorts.
@Dazzerlikestech1 Since we are up to 2 Terabytes, I am sure a full-height 5.25 inch drive like that could hold at least 10 TB. Another thing is that since the spindle speed of those were 1800RPM back then, I am sure it can achieve 5400 RPM, but it would be loud. XD This is only an estimate, though...
I think you should hook it up. It has an IDE port, right? Hahah, just kidding. I actually have one of these on my book shelf because it's so nostalgic. Man, that sound brought back memories of when I was a kid playing on my KayPro PC w/ a Seagate ST-225 20mb Hard drive. If you can find an 8088 or something with a ROM Bios and an MFM/RLL controller card, I say hook it up. G=c800:5 is the debug command to set it up in the controller's bios. (don't know why I remember this after 25 years)
And also, the seek performance of this drive is slightly slower than my ST-251 stepper motor drive, and bears an identical transfer rate (think that's my controller, see video reply for me benchmarking it)
I have one ST-4038 and a 4026 too! Cool monsters :) The only problem is that I have these two drives, but only two electronic boards (possibly both for the 4038). It worked for some day, but I was never been able to fix it to work reliable.
an65001: voice coil, it shakes the whole computer :D
@an65001 Voice coil, even judging from how the drive looks one can think it's stepper motor. I've taken apart one of these, inside there's a primitive form of voice coil actuator moving the heads in the same manner a floppy drive does, but obviously much faster.
I, personally, would like to see the drive running with the cover detached as well, if that would not harm it. I would also like you to remove the cover, and point out the various components, such as the drive heads, various caches, any controller circuits you are familiar with, etc. This is assuming it's safe.
Any safety based tips so that folks with 'scrap' drives could safely open them up as well would be appreciated.
Sadly, I lack any computers modern enough to run HDTune, that are old enough to run this hard drive, but i hope CheckIt and Norton Disk Doctor are thorough enough tests for ya.

They had voice coil back in 1987?
And also, the seek performance of this drive is slightly slower than my ST-251 stepper motor drive, and bears an identical transfer rate (think that's my controller, see video reply for me benchmarking it)
I might tear it apart anyway.

@FerralVideo They had voice coil hard disks in mainframes back in the 70's I think.

Duramatrix: That would damage the drive. And I'd have to nearly dismantle the thing.
Same with JoshtheAspie.
Don't worry you two, I'll start up that dead Maxtor soon, then we can ALL have fun torturing it!

@FerralVideo any computer can run with a mfm controller installed they're just not set to auto boot from it and you have to set it up in bios
