Instructive indeed; besides, it's somehow otherworldly the way the (English-speaking) orchestra make their way through that all-Italian "colourful" verbal hurricane, turning it into musical insight...
Perhaps he shouts because he senses not many feel the same way about music...
Like he is the only who really comprehends & loves what is written - simply because if they would feel the same as he, mistakes like that would not be made.(referring to: 2:07)
Toscanini just seems like a childish wee prick who shouts all the time, thinking that will get what he wants from the orchestra. All he seems to care about is rhythm.
He wanted the musicians to "sing," to give their absolute best. He often had to be demanding with them, perhaps because other conductors were too lax in getting the proper results in a performance.
@al1936ful But this is,by far,the Maestro at his most entertaining!I Also,if you have the opportunity, search You Tube for Buddy Rich's legendary chewing out his band on the bus! It's brutal yet hilarious!
@al1936ful Actually, I was pleased to see someone had posted his version of "Roman Festivals" from 1949. Also, according to Herbert Von Karajan from the book, "Maestro", while rehearsing in Germany, he would, almost daily, shout at the orchestra, break his baton and storm out. One day, he did this, and he heard giggling and congratulations. A musician won a pool as to when he would storm out. Toscanini realized what was going on and paid the man from his own pocket.

Bob,
Here's a Toscanini rehersal. Notice the difference!

Toscanini was on a divine mission. To make everyone hear how God wanted the music to be heard.
CANTA . . . the most beautiful word in all of music!
Through his rehearsals he truly inspired the musicians in the orchestra and got the very most he could from them.
Toscanini will live forever.

Conductors don't act that way any more: Von Karajan and Bruno walter both got tremendous results WITHOUT the "ranting" and "raving".

Well, you've gotta get it right. And if you don't listen, you must be shouted at. At least with some imagination :)

Why does everyone have to post only his ravings? He didn't just go crazy during rehearsals.
