Remember the first time you watched Star Wars. What was the first thing you saw? "A long time ago, in a galaxy far far away..." and the the screen exploded. "STAR WARS" and John Williams' tune erupt from the screen, immediately catching your attention, never letting go. I still turn into a little child every time I see the intro to a Star Wars film. It has no action whatsoever, just some words and a glorious soundtrack, but it's still one of the best and most easily recognizable openings ever.
John Williams' music for EVERY movie he has ever scored is epic, beautiful, solemn, frightening, happy... it can be described in every way possible, it is just awesome.
As for Zimmer, he has regurgitated his own scores multiple times. Batman Begins has to be one of the worst culprits. He took his own Black Rain theme from 1989 and literally just played it again hoping nobody would notice. On a technical level, the music for both TDK and Batman begins are adequate for what they are conveying, dark and broody. But they could have done with a more distinct and unique theme like Elfman created. I shudder to think of who is doing the new Superman score for Snyder.
Also, Giacchino's trek score, I felt it was lacking something in there to make it stand out. If you go back and listen to any of the scores for Trek 1 and 5 by Goldsmith, and 2 and 3 by Horner, and 6 by Eidelman, they all seem to capture the sci fi spirit and that "trek" feel. They just have something in them that helps to create a distinctive sci fi Star Trek sound, even though they are completely different composers, and each created their own themes.
Motion picture scoring is very unique in that people can get different feelings from different types of scores. Me personally, I enjoy the melodic themes, and heroic themes and scores which can make scenes memorable. Hence why I love Safan's last starfighter score, its majestic, and even if the movie was a low budget sci fi star wars esque type, it still has that magical sound to it. I did feel some magic from Super 8, so maybe the masterpiece is on its way soon.
Also, I still do not understand how you managed to come up with the conclusion that Giacchino body of work is greater than Silvestri's? Maybe I just from a different school of thought. My tendencies are towards a mix of orchestral/synthesizer scores, maybe that is why I prefer the more Vangelis type music. Silvestri managed to create memorable scores (and yes his recent work is rubbish, most people can see that), but I can't see how Giacchino has made anything better than BTTF yet.
@mugabesunny Part of my reasoning with Silvestri is as you noted, his recent work being "meh". Although I actually do agree with your opinion of MG's Star Trek scores as I consider it the weakest of his work (I guess your comment got deleted but I got it in my email). The theme itself is soulful in that opening with the horns. But a lot of the incidental parts were kinda "meh" in comparison to his other stuff. When I got the soundtrack, it's been the least I've played of his.
@mugabesunny Silvestri's on Cap? I'll have to give that a listen. Thanx for the heads up. There's been a couple of movies on my radar and while I want to see Cap, info-wise, I'm somewhat out of the loop so if there's any surprises in store, I'll probably be surprised as well.
I'm not just picking on Giacchino, I actually do like his Super 8 score which is a move in the right direction, and I hope to be proven wrong on his greatness. Also, I only like a few of Zimmer's recent scores. Too much his generic tendencies have rubbed off on the media venture crew like Jablonsky and co. There is not enough variety in today's movie music. Whereas before you could hear a Vangelis, a Goldsmith, a Williams. Nowadays, you have the same scores with electric guitar all over.
@mugabesunny Now we're starting to see eye to eye as I agree with your whole comment here. Yeah, a lot of the scores nowadays rarely stand out. Before, it was considered crucial and for me, music can make or break a movie for me (I won't get into bad editing making the scene not be in rythym with the music scores cuz' that's a whole different conversation altogether...=)
Apologies for the harsh terms used in my previous comments. I do not know where such anger came from. I don't doubt his talent, and I expect to be proven wrong, but so far his work is not strong enough. I found Giacchino's 2009 Trek score painfully generic and devoid of any unique sound. I await his greatest moment with bated breath.
I just think you have a problem with Abrams and it's extending to people he works with. Why else would you harp on Giacchino's connection to Abrams otherwise? You can't even break down why Giacchino's so bad without resorting to 'overrated Abrams lapdog'. Funny thing is, you don't give Williams any grief whatsoever for having almost ALL of his major hits with either Lucas or Speilberg. Admit it, you don't like Abrams, and by extension, MG. Because MG may not be your thing but he's not
@mugabesunny THAT bad. Vangelis did some awesome stuff with Blade Runner. He could be in my top ten. Just out of curiosity, what do you look for in a MOVIE composer? You've started listing guys now that primarily do TV and documentaries. So before you start to delve into classical composers (Tchaikofsky is my fav) to prove MG sucks, what is your criteria?
For me, the mark of a great film composer should share these traits: How well does the composer accentuate the mood/feelings/ cont'd
@mugabesunny ...does the composer accentuate the mood/feeling/action/intent of each part of the movie? Is it memorable? Does it sound good? And finally, can you see the movie/feel the movie if you're just sitting there listening to the score on it's own without the visuals? Now think about all the guys I listed. They all fit that criteria (Morricone, Williams, Elfman, Silvestri, and Giacchino) as well as Zimmer. They all do such good work that you can name the scene and story beats
@mugabesunny while listening to them. Morricone with Good, Bad and the Ugly/Untouchables and an ungodly amount more, Elfman with pretty much all of his work with Burton, Williams with Indy, SW, Minority Report, ET, and again, too many to name, and Silvestri with B2tF and Predator, etc. Giacchino has so far worked on a wide variety of movies with varied themes and if he keeps it up, he'll only get better. Oh, and you're having an argument, I'm having a discussion.
Apologies for the harsh terms used in my previous comments. I do not know where such anger came from. I don't doubt his talent, and I expect to be proven wrong, but so far his work is not strong enough. I found Giacchino's 2009 Trek score painfully generic and devoid of any unique sound. @mugabesunny I was going to talk $#!t to you for bringing up Abrams and suggesting that I love everything Abrams does (which I don't). But when I checked Giacchino's total musicology, I understood why. I honestly didn't know Michael had scored that many things for JJ/JJ produced projects. I didn't realise MG had scored LOST, Alias, Fringe and MI3. My like of MG's scores is based off of Speed Racer, Rataouille, UP, Incredibles, Cloverfield and Star Trek.
@mugabesunny So no, it has nothing to do with JJ Abrams. I just like the guy's work. I may be biased a little too because I've been playing MG's soundtracks a lot lately so it's still fresh in my head. And as far as putting Silvestri and Zimmer below MG, I said it was close, meaning just barely edged them out. Zimmer is good, but tends to be repetitive/sound the same after awhile. Silvestri's biggest score is Predator and Back to the Future (Clocktower being my favorite).
aww, he was on theverge of tears. Bt seriously, Lucas and Speilberg were hte lucky ones to have him. without the music their movies wud never have been as successfull or lasting as they became
That's All The Applause John Williams Gets??? If Some B.S. Pop Star Or Rockstar Walked Onstage, People Would Be Screaming At The Top Of Their Lungs!!! Real Musicians Don't Get Crap In Music!!! John Williams Is The Greatest Thing To Ever Happen To Music Period!!!
@DylanBStringer91 i agree completley, its so sad that in general people consider music to be people screaming and banging drums or electric guitars when john williams can create sounds that almost travel into your mind and manipulate your emotions and feelings
@jhibbitt1 Exactly!!! "Three Million Light Years Away From Home" "Binary Sunset" And The "Jurassic Park Theme" All Give Me Goosebumps And Make Me Happy When I Hear Them!!!
@bullettotheboard Nah, I don't think iot's the "system". There were/are equally great composers: Jerry Goldsmicth, James Newton Howard.... The problem is that the age of the wagnerian dramatic score is almost coming to an end (again) and many a movie use uses just a string of pop tunes or electronic/ethnic music. Williams is one of the last holdouts. And I looked at some of his scores (signarure series): He really IS outstanding.
@227060 Elfman (IMHO) writes excellent scores, but they are a lot "lighter" than the typical complex Williams score. Zimmer is a completely different story. Sometimes he goes a little overboard with his ethnic-influenced scores (Black Hawk Down) and sometimes he creates the most bombastic soundscapes (Inception), but I am not that much a fan of his traditional "romantic" or "dramatic" scores (just my opinion). I think Zimmer is awesome with computers/virtual instruments.
@aihoschema Fair enough altho among most composers i think they stand out as being some of the better ones. Having said tho Williams is in a league of his own. I know it might sound harsh since i do like his music, but I just always feel Elfman comes off sometimes as the poor man's (lol, he must cost billions) John Williams. U can't knock his Batman theme song tho. huh, I swear i never even realised when i promoted Elfman and Zimmer that they both wrote Batman scores
@227060 Well I also like Danny Elfman's Spiderman opening title music. Well I wouldn't say he is the "poor man's Williams", but his scores (like Edward Scissorhands) are a little too "light" (IMHO everything he did with Tim Burton lacks some weight and depth and scope - it serves well and that's it) and don't have the awesome power and magic of a John Willams score. Just the E.T. score makes Elfman look pale - always: IMHO. anything is debatable. Zimmer is a great choice for C. Nolan flims.
@aihoschema oh yeah I think Nolan is like the Lucas or Speilberg to Zimmer's WWilliams. Yeah I like Burton's films generally and Elfman's scores (1 of the reasons Spider-Man 3 wasn't as good as the prev installments imo was the lack of Elfman). I know what u mean about the weight of Williams scores. I mean, Im not exactly a prequel basher, but I KNOW they aren't the best films around and aren't as good as the originals but Williams scores tie them all together
0:29 excuse me, what about Bernard Herrmann, he did the famous psycho music. i like john williams, he is my favourite composer but seriously, he is just Spielbergs pet.
He is truly an amazing composer. His music in Star Wars was what made it what it is. He brought the feeling and emotion. The music in Star Wars stayed in us and will forever stay. I thank John Williams for his passion and music.
I myself am a young composer and want to invite you all to enter my youtube channel - and check out my msic. I need your support guys - come and also leave some comments. Thank you
Let's see...the theme from Star Wars, Jaws, Superman, Indiana Jones... Is there another movie composer that has so many memorable movie themes under his belt that probably 99% of the population could recognize it within just a few notes? This man is a movie/music legend!!
OMG.. HE SAID WHAT.. TOO MANY BIG WORDS FOR ME..LOL KIDDING..BUT THATS HWO THE MEXICAN WOULD SAY THEY WOULD JUST SAY .. YES YES WE DO UNDERSTAND HE SAID HE WANTS WEED OK BRING IT TELL HIM THAT COSTS 6$ PER POUND.
This man is such a genius. His music has had such an impact on the movies for which he composed, and now his compositions are arguably the contemporary tunes that are the most recognizable and recognized. Without him, Star Wars wouldn't be what it is, neither would Indiana Jones, Schindler's List, or even Harry Potter. He should get an AFI Life Achievement Award.
@SuperKarmaX Guy, doctors, psychiatrists and administrators of Asylum Arkham have asked me not to contradict you, then I will not not. If your wisdom says that, offending me, without even knowing me, who am I to contradict.
He's a brilliant composer, and amazing with music, but I think his music style wasn't exactly fitting for Star Wars. Now, when people hear any of the Star Wars themes, Star Wars is the first thing they think of, but for me, it just doesn't work. I think someone like Junichi Masuda, maybe, could have made music more StarWars-ish. Just an opinion, please don't get upset with me.
I'm not going to speak of the abominable prequels, but as far as the original trilogy goes, John Williams score is a major part of what made that trilogy.
@jonnierekkisvalur I'll definitely look him up! I'm always looking for good music. Thanks for the suggestion! So you think he writes music that would be fitting for Star Wars?
I sense a slight distaste in your choice of words - so I will say this, and it is what I tell everyone who displays a 'jealousy' factor or 'I know where he got his talent from' attitudes: The best musicians refine and build upon their predecessors - if you're not using historical references in music, you are destined to be at the back of the pack.
Not only is it a jealous face to put on, you spend more time discrediting it than simply enjoying it.
It is always easy for a critic to mention who is better and why someone is better - but to actually practice that art is an entirely different matter. If it is so obviously simple, then others would be doing it.
I skipped my music history lessons, but I guarantee that Ravel "ripped off" five other composers before him. It's just the way the wheel turns.
@facher83 I never said anything of the sort. That was jonnierekkisvalur who said that, but he did present some good points. I am envious of people who can write music, but that comment was just plain WTF?????
True, jonnierekkisvalur more appropriately... but the fact remains, why hide it under the rug? That implies being ashamed of listening and being inspired by those that are dead. But, oh well.
@facher83 Well, that's why jealous isn't exactly the right word for it! I listen to music and am jealous BECAUSE I'm looking for ideas for writing music! Interesting word choice.
@jonnierekkisvalur Yes, and John Williams has also been inspired by the likes of Wagner, Stravinsky, Berg, Schoenberg, Ligeti, Walton, Korngold and Strauss, just to name a few.
Ravel himself was similarly influenced by the likes of Debussy, Chabrier, Poulenc, Satie, and Rimsky-Korsakov.
Technique is where Williams shines brightest. He is a master orchestrator and harmonist, and continuously writes authentically in any number of styles, from Romantic, to aleatoric 20th century, to jazz, to eastern music. In spite of his fame for defining the Hollywood symphonic sound of the 70's 80's and 90's, he is one of the most versatile composers in the industry. His work reflects everyone from Bach to Bartok, and his craftsmanship remains peerless among all film composers today.
Yeah because rappers consider them selves musicians..... Oh God i wonder if i should click the post comment button, knowing what angry replies will follow shortly.
@Newellx66 Good point. Musicians, particularly those trained in the classical genre, are often well-rounded individuals that understand the value of expressions.
@Tigerlily21 : Dude, the greatest film composer EVER is an italian man named Ennio Morricone... anyone who know a little about films can tell your that...
@cougar776 Yes hes a master but John Williams is just as good in my opinion. Best ever is always opinion never fact. Im sure many people would name John Williams as the best ever, even ones who know of Morricones work. Its all a matter of taste. I could sit here and argue all day that chicken fried steak is the best meal ever invented and you probably would never agree.
Remember the first time you watched Star Wars. What was the first thing you saw? "A long time ago, in a galaxy far far away..." and the the screen exploded. @thedarksaviour755 John Williams is far far greater than Danny Elfman! Danny is but still the apprentice to the master JW.

KalelClarkKent82 1 year ago
This man is such a genius. His music has had such an impact on the movies for which he composed, and now his compositions are arguably the contemporary tunes that are the most recognizable and recognized. Without him, Star Wars wouldn't be what it is, neither would Indiana Jones, Schindler's List, or even Harry Potter. He should get an AFI Life Achievement Award.

PokemonPinecone 1 year ago
I'm not going to speak of the abominable prequels, but as far as the original trilogy goes, John Williams score is a major part of what made that trilogy.
HRVDNT 1 year ago
@PokemonPinecone Have you heard anything by Maurice Ravel?
jonnierekkisvalur 1 year ago
@jonnierekkisvalur I'll definitely look him up! I'm always looking for good music. Thanks for the suggestion! So you think he writes music that would be fitting for Star Wars?
PokemonPinecone 1 year ago
@PokemonPinecone I'm saying that John Williams was heavily influenced by Ravel and even stole a few passages from his work.
jonnierekkisvalur 1 year ago
@jonnierekkisvalur Who knew? Like, which passages? In different keys, I suppose, and with some twists; he'd probably want them to go unnoticed.
PokemonPinecone 1 year ago
@PokemonPinecone
Not only is it a jealous face to put on, you spend more time discrediting it than simply enjoying it.
facher83 1 year ago
It is always easy for a critic to mention who is better and why someone is better - but to actually practice that art is an entirely different matter. If it is so obviously simple, then others would be doing it.
I skipped my music history lessons, but I guarantee that Ravel "ripped off" five other composers before him. It's just the way the wheel turns.
facher83 1 year ago
@facher83: "I skipped my music history lessons"
That explains a lot.

@RogueRotting360
I would say "clever" but the substance of your post is as dry and empty as any other online comment.
What's your point? Online social commentary?
facher83 1 year ago
@facher83 Online musical commentary.
Were you expecting me to pour out my soul?
RogueRotting360 1 year ago
@facher83 I never said anything of the sort. That was jonnierekkisvalur who said that, but he did present some good points. I am envious of people who can write music, but that comment was just plain WTF?????
PokemonPinecone 1 year ago
True, jonnierekkisvalur more appropriately... but the fact remains, why hide it under the rug? That implies being ashamed of listening and being inspired by those that are dead. But, oh well.
Valid point. My buttons were mixed up.
facher83 1 year ago
@facher83 Well, that's why jealous isn't exactly the right word for it! I listen to music and am jealous BECAUSE I'm looking for ideas for writing music! Interesting word choice.
PokemonPinecone 1 year ago
@jonnierekkisvalur Yes, and John Williams has also been inspired by the likes of Wagner, Stravinsky, Berg, Schoenberg, Ligeti, Walton, Korngold and Strauss, just to name a few.
Ravel himself was similarly influenced by the likes of Debussy, Chabrier, Poulenc, Satie, and Rimsky-Korsakov.

rollicker 1 year ago 19
Technique is where Williams shines brightest. He is a master orchestrator and harmonist, and continuously writes authentically in any number of styles, from Romantic, to aleatoric 20th century, to jazz, to eastern music. In spite of his fame for defining the Hollywood symphonic sound of the 70's 80's and 90's, he is one of the most versatile composers in the industry. His work reflects everyone from Bach to Bartok, and his craftsmanship remains peerless among all film composers today.
