Right out your damn window. I sat in a similar seat on a red eye LAX to NEW back in the eighties. Listened to that same lousy droning for like five hours. Never again...
Just for those interested, the md80 and md81 use 3.73 gallons per air mile average. The md83 and md87 use 2.79 gallons per mile. The guy that wrote the 737 save 2,00 a flight can get this off beoings site. The 737-900ER uses 2.44 gallons per mile. If MD90 info was available, the numbers should be the same as the 737. This is why delta and american have kept the planes.
I love the view of rumbling through the clouds then finally getting to clear sky. I just returned from 11 hour flight from Hawaii and it was smooth sailing the whole time.

md-80's are the most dangerous planes in the world. the fuel tank is located in the wings, and it travels through a thin tube to the back engines, usually the thin tubes break off, spill petroleum everywhere, and cause the plane to crash. 1 good thing is the md-80 is made to glide
@bbaker904 could you give us some numbers? (I guess it is not a good comparison. A Boeing has crashed far more often than a Saab so a Boeing is less reliable?)
@bbaker904 simple airbus sucks thats my opinon the worst was in 09 on Air France 447 everyone had to suffer and die cause of computer errors and of course it happened during a thunderstorm my trust for ever and always is with Boeing they been around longer they'er more older but more reliable and have nicer looking aircrafts ive been on boeing aircrfts alot for a longtime and MD80's alot to the MD80's may have had theyer share of problems but theyer still relible
Some aircraft do that at DFW. At Founders Plaza, I once saw an Eva Air Cargo 747-400 take off about 1/4 down the runway. It took off really far down, and was a blazing thrill to watch.
I always love the bit when you punch through the cloud base into sunshine & blue sky. That's the start of a holiday for me! Good video thanx for posting.
But 737 stink for comfort. Ever ride in a power boat? That what the MD80 series feel like. Rear pusher. The 737 is underpowered by weight of the plane compaired to the 757 and 767. It gives a bumpy ride and has a slower climb rate.
Yes, the MD-80 is a more stable and powerful aircraft, and I personally like it more over the 737, but suppose you own an airline. You spend much more in fuel flying MD-80's than using 737's or A320's along with the financial crisis. Plus, it doesn't make any sense to retrofit the old MD-80's flight decks if you can't use more fuel-efficient engines on them. Also, you wouldn't use mid-sized airplanes like the 757 or 767 in short, low-medium density routes.
Let's do the math of your 2,000 dollars more an hour. Aviation fuel average cost right now is 2.80. For math let's say 3 dollars a gallon. So your saying a MD80 uses near 700 gallons of fuel an hour. Prove it. You would be using more fuel than the plane could carry to fly 3 hours at your rate. The later MD88 and MD90 held more passengers than the 737. That's why fleets are slow to take them out of service today.
For one thing, I happen to like the MD-80 family of jets, and another is the fact that that you didn't stop the video when going thru the clouds...'tho I did notice a little bit of editing there. Still, well done! :)
The sad thing is that the AA md80 will start to be replaced with the boeing 737 800.

an economy airplane? was. On this days, it spends $2,000USD more in fuel costs per flight hour than a 737-800
