Wow. I actually think this is the most cleverly orchestrated no-budget commercial of 2008. I guess GM knows the audience they want to cater to with this sagacious advertisement! The dog and the foot are cool genius. The irony seems almost as refreshing as the foot bath itself! LOL
OMFG GM is so stupid! The EV1 commercials were retarded but not nearly this bad. They didn't even show what the fucking car looks like! They're probably hoping the Volt will fail so they can continue with their fun guzzlers. This is going to turn into a giant car-crushing clusterfuck just like the EV1.
The only really capable EVs on the road are those that the major companies HAD to make because of the California zero emissions mandate of the late 90s. I personally drive a 2000 Ford Ranger EV which luckily escaped the crusher. It's a shame to think of how much advancement in EVs we would have if California hadn't backed off on their mandate. EVs were real, now we are playing catch up. But this time at least it's because of public interest, not strictly a government mandate.
With all-electrics now a practical reality in other countries, the only thing protecting them is government protection. In the US it is FORBIDDEN for an AEV to go >35mph. But check out the G-Wiz and other AEVs. They go up to 45-50mph, making them practical for all but freeway driving. In the UK, owners get perks like free parking and tax breaks--they are rewarded for helping the environment. Honda's clean quiet Civic diesel has been sold in Europe for 3 or 4 years. Here we can't even buy these!
I see nothing has changed since they were refusing to sell EV-1's... how long is it going to be before they refuse to sell this piece of vapourware then?
I gotta agree with most of the comments, that's gotta be one of the top 5 worst ads of all time. Didn't make me want to go buy the car at all. Made me want to change the channel actually.
I agree that this is stupid...we have to look at something gross, an ugly dog plus someones foot. It does nothing to inspire, it makes you feel bad. So that is the kind of emotion they are wanting to ellicit with their product?
it looks like chevy is pulling the same crap GM did with advertising the EV1. GM purposely put out ridiculously stupid ads with the actual intention of reducing demand so they didn't have to build a vehicle that would end up competing with their primary Internal Combustion Engine platform.
I agree with you.. Remember the EV1 ads? They were more stupid, like a freak of nature. If it was like the older Budweiser commercials, that would be cool. Or the Taco Bell dog, and Godzilla.. (Hey godzilla, whatcha wanna drink?!)
I also agree. It's like they want people to run away from this car so they can then cry "look, we tried. The American public doesnt want hybrids. Look how nice and flashy this car is, yet people still buy gas. Looks like we will go back to only gas"... It really does seem that is their plan.
I never saw the EV1 ads. But my feeling is they simply don't know how to promote this. US makers have spent all their effort knocking alternative vehicles and are now paying the price for their short-sighted stupidity. They have to back-pedal AND save face, not an easy combination! They know that if they don't infiltrate the growing market very soon, they may die. Even 2011 may be too late, and that date sounds tenuous.
Is this for the Volt, a car I hope to buy as soon as it comes out, or some revolting, sick inside joke? Did GM actually pay some add agency to come up with this incipid crap? There's a postive buzz about this car, but a few more idiocy like this will turn off many people from GM and its Volt project.
If the GM marketing people have any sense, they will remove this AND go after any and all who post this video.
Yeah, that is far worse than the previous Volt ad. They either obviously don't want to sell the things, or they hire the most incompetent ad agency in the country.
Almost the worst thing about it is that they say it has a 40 mile range, but don't explain that the rage extender concept means you can just fill it up with gas to go farther than that. Most people will see this and say "40 miles? Why would I buy that?"
wow, was this actually aired on tv??

New car ads always feature a handsome man or beautiful woman behind the wheel, driving in an ideal urban setting; thats how they sell cars.
With this ad, GM has revealed its true intenions.
Lifted is the veil of the dark side.
