  • its like tellin a stranger bout a rock n roll

  • Its SO OLD!!! OMG!

  • John Sebastian was INTENDED to be part of Crosby, Stills, Nash but opted out instead of going to Woodstock . . . . TRIVIA- Then came their old friend Neil Young introduced to them by Joni Mitchell

  • fantastic! that's all I can say. anyone know the name of the instument John Sebastian is playing?

  • @zipandzug That's an autoharp.

  • @QuestioningSoftware thank you!

  • @zipandzug It's called an auto-harp.

  • @vltjd thanks

  • I had a friend that I grew up with. This was in a simpler time. I didnt see him for a while. After I got out of the Army I was listining to a local (am) station. I thought it sounded like him so I went and banged on the door. The guy said is that you Pete? I said yeah, Mike? I requested a song and Mike put out on the local radio " to Pete who just got out of the war, have a happy!" I will never forget his kindness , or this song!!!

  • When I was In the second grade this was a song we had to learn in music class. I thought the song was magic then and I still do now....

  • These guys really had a unique kind of genius. . . .thanks for posting!

  • very cool thanks lol dates me, but dates my sister more lol

  • This song is so true to my life, "do you believe in magic in a young girl's heart, how the music can free her whenever it starts?" My music and I are connected by some unnatural force or entity; it's hard to describe, I call it "strange magic." ♥♥♥ Most people just don't understand... :(

  • love the autoharp...

  • they have an amazing sound :)

  • i was born in the wrong generation.....justin bieber dominates my peers brains....its super sad.

  • It's hard to look back at an age of such unalloyed optimism in the future from where we stand now. We surely have thrown it away.

  • @harrasepp Two years before this video the President was shot down in cold blood. The same year as this video, LA was set on fire by its citizens. Two years later the same would happen in Detroit. Three years later would be the Kent State riots, and RFK and MLK shot down in cold blood...look for the bad and you'll find the bad. Look for the good...

  • @wackywackies - but I seem to remember we had hope for a better age to come

  • @harrasepp Ah, yes, but that's the fault of those who should be hopeful, not the circumstances in which they exist. The real difference today is the institutionalization of cynicism.

  • @harrasepp, I know that is saddest thing abvout this video & song.

  • i got an italian test tomorrow, a medieval reneissance test, an english test... screw it, im listening to an hour of good music, ranging from Beatles, to Loving spoonfull, to cat stevens, and Mozart. Screw pop, screw so calle "modern" rock, which is no more than crap, screw bieber, my english, med ren and italian teacher, and all the disney channel "singers".

Thanks for the wonderful music people of the past, we're surely not seeing any good one ahead. so ill just sit here and dream with you:)

  • Im 18 years old and LOVE THIS SHIT! soo good. Suggest other stuff like this... I edit skateboard videos and would love to use music like this in my clips!

  • Then I was the "Younger Generation"

  • The instrumental backing is from the recording but John's vocal is different from the 45. Is John's vocal live or is this just an alternate vocal track of the song?

  • @soldmeout Live vocal

  • what's with the zombie chicks on the bikes?

  • Music = happiness

  • There are many people who believe, to this day, that John Sebastian (singing lead in the glasses) is the father of Cass Elliott's daughter (Owen Vanessa Elliott).

  • this song is so groovy i love it so much!!!^_^

  • gone kinda warm and groovy love

  • how i wish lovin spoonful's do you believe in magic live videos is multcolored version

  • They seemed like a fun band. I'm a little young for them, but I do love them.

  • Apparently there's 9 people who don't believe in magic!

  • @Dayga Crackpots!

  • this reminds me of growin up in jersey, runnin around causin trouble

  • like how this wasn't dubbed in...seem to really be working it!

  • Relax, enjoy the song....then watch HOME..on youtube.....over 16 million can't be wrong...Amazing. I lived this era of music and I'm so glad YT has this so we can all have fun! Peace V

  • You can tell this is live and not a lipsink. I had this song on the WCFL hits album. Don’t know how they pulled that one off and wonder if the Spoonful received their royalties from it.

  • Is there any way we can make everything STOP and turn the clock back to 1965?

  • I want that car so badly....

  • I can play the triangle..sometimes i got to play the gong when marching at venice beach.

  • very motown in style and harmony.

  • this is my life theme song

    <3

  • cool

  • When I see a beatnik with an autoharp, it makes me think of the first time I ever saw anyone play one, and that was my Kindergarten teacher! I don't know whether to think that such a "romper room" instrument would even be any more 'audible' in the world of rock and roll than would be a 'triangle', but it looks to me like little more than a 'prop'.

  • @notfragile33 prop or not, goofy or not, this guy has one thing that 99.99999 of us "clever, observant, witty ect" people will never have....relevance after 41 years....have a great day!

  • IM IN HEAVEN AND SMILING WITH my bowl! XDDDD

  • Again... this is the greatest song I've ever heard, thanks for sharing...

  • First time I ever saw Zack with a guitar other than the Guild

  • @sgguitarzz - not to be a smartass, but it's Zal.

  • this is magic!!!

  • I would sing this song to a girl that i love and miss alot rite now!!!

  • Listening to this song I believe in magic of great music and being young at heart after all these years.....

  • this music just transports you through time back to the 70s and 60s...

this music dates back to a long ago era now...

  • @Shaung1231 Magic is a metaphor for music, in case you weren't listening.

  • He has a special on PBS this week about folk music. Funny to see a harpsichord. I remember playing one in grade school.

  • @sandinmyears1 Uh, it is an Autoharp. LOL

  • Comment removed

  • @Kamisamadesu1 - Oh, ok. I knew that but forgot. (I must be getting old). LOL

  • After spending some time with John Sebastian last weekend, I have a greater admiration for the man and his music. I've always loved the music, but the man is a true genious and a humble being.

  • 9 people dont believe in magic

  • @bAbyDinOsaur0us but they all like your comment

  • @bAbyDinOsaur0us

    11 -.-

11 people who don't wake up next morning because the magic mafia was at home

  • If you can remember the 60's you weren't there!

  • oh snap! this was when they had to sing live and didn't have use of Autotune to make them sound perfect! they're still good, but you can hear the little different differences between live and the studio LP

  • Yes. Yes, I believe in Magic.

  • I was born in 1965 and i still like this old song ! 44/m

  • wooooow so good!! Does I'M the only one who think that the world was definetly better in the 60's ?? I wanna go back in these years !

  • @TheBrianStones Pretty much. Racism was rampant, you would have heard nothing but shit on the radio unless it was college radio, and people were assholes. You could have been drafted if you were old enough, if you were disabled, poor, a woman, black, an atheist, a child from a broken home, the world sucked. Oh yea and people still hit their kids.

Who in their right mind would ever want to go back to the 60s? Just listen to cds stupid.

  • @Sshelly34213 yah if you're a union or welfare leach, life pretty much is great now!.

  • @flippyflyer You've got to be kidding me...welfare leach? Let me tell you about the union pal, my dad used to be a part of a union and the union bosses charged him more money than he was making in a goddamn week. It's not the workers who are the ones to blame, who brainwashed you? It's the union bosses who act like lords, they're middle man.

Christ, the ignorance of human beings never fails to amaze me. No offense and sorry for getting ranty, but you're blaming the victim and it's insulting.

  • this song is magic itself, i just dont like another music genre thats not metal, but for some reason i love this song, i used to dance it with my grandma when i was just a little child

  • hommie had some good size guns fo a 60's rocker.

  • What's the name of the instrument that John Sebastian is playing?

  • @ureadmymind i belive its called an auto-harp

  • @ureadmymind Autoharp

  • I can't believe it. This is how I first saw the Spoonful on TV, with the hokey set-up with the old MG and chicks on motorcycles, performing "Do You Believe in Magic".

I believe I was 13 years old at the time, and Hullaballoo and Shindig were two afternoon shows we never missed after getting home from school. God, it's been 44 years since the last time I saw this exact show performance!! WOW!

  • I remember this song even though I was only 4 when it came out. I can remember dancing in the living room when it would come on the radio!

  • the gayest song ever..OMG

  • @xXxSuicideriderxXx May your name come true. Jerk.

  • @slownoman yes my name will come true because i rude in your house and desrtroy it and you come whit me to the hell hahahahhuhuhuhahahaha ;)

i just kidding ..but i dont like this song

  • @xXxSuicideriderxXx No problem. It's still, partly, a free country. I loathe heavy metal crap and homogenized Nashville gruel.

  • so cute.

    love this song =)

  • Now this is some good stuff man.....

  • I love this song.....

  • Groovy old song.

  • Were John Sebastian & John Lennon separated at birth??

  • @hank3rox I guess those style glasses makes everyone look like John Lennon. I do see the resemblance to Lennon tho. ;-)

  • @OldTimerGuy58 ha I look like John Lennon with those glasses and I'm a 55 year old female :)

  • you should try to fix the sound on it i mean its good just make it so ppl can hear it...

  • These guys took lots of acid.

  • Yes i believe in magic

  • Was in a store the other day... Those striped shirts are back!!

  • @garymichael1950 If you wait long enough everything comes back. I keep waiting for bell bottoms, platforms and polyester double knits to revolve around again. I've got an attic full of them. LOL.

  • @carrotjuse Sounds great to me.

  • What has happened to good music like this?

  • @Lenjia it got pretty sexy:

    /watch?v=TRfSbtCFKQ4

  • These sure were better times ~ thanks for posting!

  • Zal was a amazing guitar player then

  • I love this song

It was one of the first songs I ever heard, and I liked it then too.

  • @LovinSporkful haha "sporkful" :D

  • The line : "But it's like trying to tell a stranger/about rock and roll" is one of the classic statements of the era--

  • The instrument is actually called an Autoharp , a favourite of the Carter family.

  • Doesn't get any better than this.

By the way, how much for that '48 MG?

  • Thankyou , John. I didn't get to see the Beatles, but seeing the Spoonful live was just as good in the '60"s!

  • One thing you might try, 428sj; a reminder of this decade is a band called the Stone Roses from Manchester. There an 80's band but clearly influenced by the 60's. Just as brillant as this band, any band from this decade.

  • This decade saw so many brillant artists! The lovin' spoonfuls are just an example of this, Brillant!

  • Great John Sebastian very good

  • The "guy in the striped shirt" is the genius John Sebastian playing an autoharp. Check out a few more of their songs if you're not familiar with the Spoonful.

  • i saw themdo this live at fordham university in 1966

  • What's the instrument the guy in the striped t.shirt playing?

  • That's John Sebastian, and he calls his instrument an Angel Harp, I think

  • Geez... I have this song on a 4 track cartridge tape and played the snot out of it!

  • I still have a few of these 4 track cartridges. You are the first person to admit having, or even knowing about these things. I had a four track, later a 4/8 track combination player in my Corvair Spyder. Wish I still had the Corvair, though I would move up to a cd player.

  • great great greeaaaat song , the sound is damn rusty though

  • are these the originaL singers?

  • :D AWSOME

  • @AlyAndAJFever well

this basically means you have musical taste and that's not an opinion.or an offence.

    That's a fact!

  • harry potter is all grown up in this.

  • 60s Glasgow...vespa....small faces...the who...going to port seaton singing sloop john b...could life get any better!!!!!

  • If only we had been mates in clacton on the weekend you could have saved me being beaten up by rockers. did u have mods in glasgow, ps i had a lambretta250gt

  • yea that group had it going on because they had everybody sang this tune and doing a dance to it so it cross over to the hood along with the zombies to and it is still going strong lol.

  • Still my favorite song of all time.

  • i love this song!its putting me in such a great mood!

  • I LOVE THIS SONG

  • are you a youngun? if so then that explains it.

  • Hey Dellamomuffin12, I AGREE with you. People need to learn how to tape music before posting it.

  • i <3 this song

  • i really hate how people make remakes of songs like ally and aj's remakes of this

  • Some aren't so bad. Infact, some are even better than the originals. Most are pretty horrible, though.

  • me too.

  • @delanomuffin12 Agreed, people should just leave it to the real deal to sing this, why can't people just leave the good music alone?

  • @delanomuffin12 I appreciate everything. like the fact folks like you will continue to hate folks that make remakes, and folks like them will continue to make remakes. And the wheel in the sky keeps on turning.

  • @delanomuffin12 yeah but i can jack off to ally and aj

  • @delanomuffin12 Remakes aren't all bad. Hendrix' version of All Along the Watchtower blows Dylan's away.

  • My favorite 60's band (after The Beatles, of course!) I saw them in Asbury Park, NJ, maybe 1965.

  • Jeff Beck would have put his hand in the model's skirt to make sure she wasn't dead. But Jeff Beck probably never got an invite to Hullabaloo,

  • John Sebastian era y es un hombre muy atractivo!

    Me encanta Lovin Spoonful!!

    Gracias por colgar esta cancion!

  • JS revived brief US interest in the autoharp - familiar instrument to children of Balkan immigrants! Did he have an electric pickup for his?

  • He probably did... those pick-ups were readily available in the music stores at the time and I remember seeing them there.

  • Saw them to outdoor concert at Murray State University back in 1967.

  • WOW, You're lucky!

  • Saw them twice..GREAT !!

  • @45jamestown This is another John jewel. I saw them in '68 at Harvard stadium. They were magic that night! The play list included a song John sang about a father - son relationship. I loved that tune but can't seem find it anywhere. Can't remember the title or words. Really only heard it once, that night. Possibly never recorded? Anybody know which I'm talking about?

  • @ZZJoCa

    I believe it's " Younger Generation ".

  • @ras977 Wow, that was it; right under my nose, all the time. Mucho gracias!

  • @ZZJoCa

You are welcome. Do a you tube search for it. You can hear it again.

  • @ras977 I listened around a dozen times last night. Actually like the Woodstock version better.

  • I love this song so much! It's one of mother's favorites.

  • Zal Yanovsky plays a Gibson Firebird guitar instead of his customary Guild Thunderbird guitar in this clip.

  • They aint gay ... just totally ripped!

And, that's what chix on motorbikes oughtta look like ... hoo eee!!

  • Like dead people?

  • 60s dead pan. women did it all the time on stage. icey cool. i think it looks kind of lame as well

  • The sets and the whole presentation of the music shows just how far behind the curve the TV was at the time. TV was still being run by cynical old hacks who thought the public were as stupid as them.

  • Agreed. Whose idea was it to put those gruesome zombies on the motorcycles in front of the band?

  • Whose idea was it to give those gruesome Disney Stars the idea they could pull off a cover of the songs?

  • Don't comment if you wanna offend.

  • @pauletaloca Offend? You're talking to the wrong guy! How about some audio on this thing? It sounds as if you used a tomato juice can!

  • Those non-moving Hullabaloo chicks creep me out.

  • OMG~~The Hullabloo Show... :D!!

So cool of you to find and post this!

Yes, used to like this song :)

  • Amo esos videos! Gracias,x colgarlo

    Paz y amor amiga!!

  • Awesome band and song! I love all these old clips from Hullabaloo!
