Gentoo Its a waste of Cpu, Energy, Time, and etc. And Portage system is full of bugs. Its better use a precompiled packages, because the gains about the flags are minimum. However it is the most fun O.S.
Also portage is the only package manager where a simple 20kb Application doesnt load 150mb of GTK+ Dependencies because it have an GTK+ Interface beside its Qt Interface.
You can have a clean Qt or GTK+ System.
Also its much easier to keep your system clean with the world-file of portage. No package manager have a smiliar feature,
So Portage have about the same amount of bugs as other package managers, with an large increase of features.
@fpilee Gentoo is really for the enthusiast. Why do people build their own systems when they can just pay a couple of hundred bucks more for the same thing? I like the idea of a slim, preconfigured, system. I like the idea of gaining a deeper understanding of everything you do in life; contrasted by ignorance.
You inspired me, I finally got a working Gentoo install (by that I mean kernel ;) last night and listened to this all the way through it. I think the music made me type faster. P
@RegelnDerTechnik You don't need to know anything about programming to install linux. If you've never installed linux the easiest way in would be Ubuntu. I suggest you to play around with it for some time. When you feel you're ready to install something harder, try debian out, it's slightly harder than ubuntu, and then I suggest you to try Arch linux out. When you feel you're good enough with the command line, give gentoo a try.
@MrEdes7 I actually started out with Debian. It's not all that hard to install. But I'm sure it is a little hard for someone who hasn't learned a little bit about linux beforehand.
Nice quick run, you forget only to mention formating HDDs, but that can really take another 10 minutes on 1TB HDD :)
And IMHO this could be even faster if you have used for emerge downloading binaries or --quiet (>> /dev/null) as displaying every file while untaring stage3 /portage and emerge --sync takes some ammount of CPU usage.
Oh and another thing, default kernels options dont contain ext2 support that is used for /boot in guide. So if I was a newbie, I would rather follow official guide :)
You could save some time by piping the download directly to tar instead of saving to disk :) For example wget -O - gentoo.cs.nctu.edu.tw/gentoo/snapshots/portage-latest.tar.bz2 | tar xjv

@ThExR3V0LVER chroot i installed it in /gentoo after the installation is finished you just rm -rf your existing system an copy the content of /gentoo to /, looks like that cd / mv home home.old for i in $( ls | grep -v home | grep -v gentoo ); do rm -rf $i; done mv /gentoo/* /* mv home.old home chroot / grub than you install grub and thats all =)
@Ninjamaster333 You might need to reduce your USE flags for now. Try temporarily removing some USE flags from /etc/make.conf and trying again; just install the basic packages first with -gtk -kde -qt4, -java, et cetera, then readd those later after you've installed the basic packages. I encounter this sort of problem with new installations, and it's usually because I've added all my USE flags all at once.
@vnck25 I can't say that it is. I'm Irish, and I know Celtic music. Also, I'll re-post this: Cutting Bracken/Brisk Bob/Laird Of Drumblair (CELTIC Fiddle Festival) ;-)
@vnck25 trolling? ok, i'll take the bait. not only did your man not play his cards right, but we put you guys over a barrel and ass fucked you. then for good measure we turned you over to the communists for you to reap what was sewn. not to mention we still occupy your soulless country to this day, just to make sure you don't commit genocide yet again. :)
how is it that ubuntu does not work? i would say ubuntu is the most noob friendly distro. have you tried linux mint? or DSL?
if that many distros dont work im thinking that you either are doing something wrong or your comp might not be compatible. but how is that possible?...
There is a graphical live dvd. But it's not recommended. If you've got the time, try to do a gentoo minimal install. Get help from the forums if you're stuck. Once it's installed, you'll be glad you did it.
I have to get a replacement cd-rom for the laptop, because the motor on the laser assembly has failed. I checked the bios to see if I could us an external usb cd-rom, but toshiba didn't bother providing support.
But on the other hand it was not a really complete minimal install (eg. cron and logger are missing). Additionaly you skipped the partition work :-/ and the compilation time was sometimes a bit too fast (I would suspect a ccache in the background but I just finished a minimal install on an atom-pc so Iam not really sure :-)).
it is not ccache or anything else used. Watch at the clock. The clock runs in real time and its a 100% stage3 and as you can se i never set up the usage of ccache =)

Gentoo is a way to use your CPU, no waste. If you have an AMD Phenom II X6 and just listening to music, that is waste of CPU.
Portage is full of bugs, but its still the Package Manager with the most features i ever seen in my life.
The only Package manager where you can upgrade package from third-party-repos without destroying your whole system.
The only manager with correct reverse dependency, and on my Desktop System with KDE, i can see an speedincrease up to 20% compared to Archlinux

They dont know that typing something into a terminal is just using normal applications.

@Vamp898 your right but there is a graphical interface in applications....
in the terminal you have to know the exact commands...

either you´re awesomely stupid or you just dont know how a clock works...
Scroll 5 minutes and the clock showes 5 minutes more.. for me that is realtime
Also you can install Gentoo yourself and will see that it doesn´t take longer than 10 Minutes.

Is there any way to do a graphical install on Gentoo minimal Install?
I'm new to linux and the setup in your video looks more than a little complex.
I'm trying to setup linux on an old laptop that Ubuntu, Kubuntu, OpenSuse, and Fedora have failed to work on.
Windows will run on it, but I prefer the flexibility of linux.
