  • Total Coool^-^ Aber das Video braucht ein Update :D ^^

  • @Vizalnimiteah

  • song name?

  • And I thought the slackware installer was difficult...

  • This was the fastest 10 minutes in my life! :)

  • have you booted from the gentoo LiveDVD in this video, and are you installing while using that LiveDVD????

  • Song name?

  • This Video really needs an update

It would blow your head to see this compiling on my AMD Phenom II X6 with 6x3,3 GHz

  • @Vamp898

Gentoo Its a waste of Cpu, Energy, Time, and etc. And Portage system is full of bugs. Its better use a precompiled packages, because the gains about the flags are minimum. However it is the most fun O.S.

  • @fpilee

Gentoo is a way to use your CPU, no waste. If you have an AMD Phenom II X6 and just listening to music, that is waste of CPU.

Portage is full of bugs, but its still the Package Manager with the most features i ever seen in my life.

The only Package manager where you can upgrade package from third-party-repos without destroying your whole system.

The only manager with correct reverse dependency, and on my Desktop System with KDE, i can see an speedincrease up to 20% compared to Archlinux

  • @Vamp898

Also portage is the only package manager where a simple 20kb Application doesnt load 150mb of GTK+ Dependencies because it have an GTK+ Interface beside its Qt Interface.

You can have a clean Qt or GTK+ System.

Also its much easier to keep your system clean with the world-file of portage. No package manager have a smiliar feature,

So Portage have about the same amount of bugs as other package managers, with an large increase of features.

Right now there is no PM which can beat portage

  • @fpilee Gentoo is really for the enthusiast. Why do people build their own systems when they can just pay a couple of hundred bucks more for the same thing? I like the idea of a slim, preconfigured, system. I like the idea of gaining a deeper understanding of everything you do in life; contrasted by ignorance.

  • You inspired me, I finally got a working Gentoo install (by that I mean kernel ;) last night and listened to this all the way through it. I think the music made me type faster. P

  • Dude, the Linux OS are over run with Euro super on steroid geeks. I don't know what programming level are they on. I am still on binary.

So many syntax and command codes, so many OS and platform. Gee, don't have time for this. Where are you Google when I need you?

  • @UnitedPebbles get ubuntu my friend

  • Gentoo-sources, has some patches for the gentoo system :/

  • i also want know how 2 install that, hmmm i work in the IT but, i dont know any thing of programming softwares...... i also want that !!

    sry 4 my bad english

    nice vid

  • @RegelnDerTechnik You don't need to know anything about programming to install linux. If you've never installed linux the easiest way in would be Ubuntu. I suggest you to play around with it for some time. When you feel you're ready to install something harder, try debian out, it's slightly harder than ubuntu, and then I suggest you to try Arch linux out. When you feel you're good enough with the command line, give gentoo a try.

  • @MrEdes7 jeah I installed ubuntu 10.10, but i tryed to install gentoo yesterday, i konfigured the kernel and all....

but it dont work. cause grub bootloader says: error 8: error 8 kernel must be loaded before booting :(.

but thx 4 ur comment i try ubuntu then debian, & then finally gentoo xD..

  • @MrEdes7 I actually started out with Debian. It's not all that hard to install. But I'm sure it is a little hard for someone who hasn't learned a little bit about linux beforehand.

  • @MrEdes7

Most people think --> typing something into a termina = programming.

They dont know that typing something into a terminal is just using normal applications.

  • @Vamp898 your right but there is a graphical interface in applications....

in the terminal you have to know the exact commands...

    thats not the "normal using"

  • actually i like the song

  • Nice quick run, you forget only to mention formating HDDs, but that can really take another 10 minutes on 1TB HDD :)

And IMHO this could be even faster if you have used for emerge downloading binaries or --quiet (>> /dev/null) as displaying every file while untaring stage3 /portage and emerge --sync takes some ammount of CPU usage.

Oh and another thing, default kernels options dont contain ext2 support that is used for /boot in guide. So if I was a newbie, I would rather follow official guide :)

  • really good job, im working myself forward myself. done alot of windowsprogramming etc, never touched gentoo, barely touched linux.

  • tHANKS is good the installation!! And what's the name of the song???

  • @mrXrep

either you´re awesomely stupid or you just dont know how a clock works...

Scroll 5 minutes and the clock showes 5 minutes more.. for me that is realtime

Also you can install Gentoo yourself and will see that it doesn´t take longer than 10 Minutes.

  • @Vamp898 BULL-FUCKING-SHIT

  • Hmmm you weren't running this on a VM...Where did you install it, and if you made it, how would you run it? :P

  • @ThExR3V0LVER chroot i installed it in /gentoo after the installation is finished you just rm -rf your existing system an copy the content of /gentoo to /, looks like that cd / mv home home.old for i in $( ls | grep -v home | grep -v gentoo ); do rm -rf $i; done mv /gentoo/* /* mv home.old home chroot / grub than you install grub and thats all =)
  • O_O 7 megabits per second. holy shit. lol

  • gr8 job...and nice Irish Music....:-)

  • Real fun is the hours it takes to compile syslog-ng :D

  • Hello vamp898

I have recently installed Gentoo but I am having some problems emerging some packages (x-server and KDE) I get an error about circular dependencies.

Is there any way you can help me?

  • @Ninjamaster333 You might need to reduce your USE flags for now. Try temporarily removing some USE flags from /etc/make.conf and trying again; just install the basic packages first with -gtk -kde -qt4, -java, et cetera, then readd those later after you've installed the basic packages. I encounter this sort of problem with new installations, and it's usually because I've added all my USE flags all at once.

  • @Ninjamaster333 That is not possible over this mail system here in YouTube. You would have to add me in ICQ, Jabber or something else

  • What's the name of this song? And who's the artist?

  • already asked before ;)

  • I love the Celtic music.

It's relaxing, and ever since playing Braid on the ol' Xbox 360 I can't help but picture scenes from it whenever I hear Celtic music.

  • @got2nesa The music is hindi it has nothing to do with Celts!

  • @vnck25 Are you serious?

  • @rlhstl

Why do you ask me, isn't it obvious to you ?

  • @vnck25 i am scottish, that is definitely a celtic violinist, or fiddle as we call it. :)

  • @NiGhtMarEs0nWax

I dont care if you are Polish ha ha ha , the fact of the matter is you are wrong and I am right!

  • @vnck25 if you say so man, i know my heritage.

  • @NiGhtMarEs0nWax

Good for you.. ha ha ha

The heritage that was banged by the English right?

  • @vnck25 a german, trying to bait me? good one. at least i have a heritage to be proud of.

  • @NiGhtMarEs0nWax

he he he, proud about ur heritage... Only if that Austrian dumb goat played his cards correctly you guys would be liking our asses for food.

  • @vnck25 trolling? ok, i'll take the bait. not only did your man not play his cards right, but we put you guys over a barrel and ass fucked you. then for good measure we turned you over to the communists for you to reap what was sewn. not to mention we still occupy your soulless country to this day, just to make sure you don't commit genocide yet again. :)

you started it. gl with life.

  • @rlhstl he is lol. :)

  • Is there any way to do a graphical install on Gentoo minimal Install?

I'm new to linux and the setup in your video looks more than a little complex.

I'm trying to setup linux on an old laptop that Ubuntu, Kubuntu, OpenSuse, and Fedora have failed to work on.

Windows will run on it, but I prefer the flexibility of linux.

  • how is it that ubuntu does not work? i would say ubuntu is the most noob friendly distro. have you tried linux mint? or DSL?

if that many distros dont work im thinking that you either are doing something wrong or your comp might not be compatible. but how is that possible?...

  • Nevermind, I found out what the problem is.

I keep getting I/O errors, because the cd rom drive has gone bad.

It is a Pentium 4 2.8GHz laptop. It's kinda old, but should work if I use an external CD Rom.

  • thats great news that you found out the problem.

  • There is a graphical live dvd. But it's not recommended. If you've got the time, try to do a gentoo minimal install. Get help from the forums if you're stuck. Once it's installed, you'll be glad you did it.

  • I have to get a replacement cd-rom for the laptop, because the motor on the laser assembly has failed. I checked the bios to see if I could us an external usb cd-rom, but toshiba didn't bother providing support.

    Thanks for the info.

  • @aquaphobicFish

Debian works better with old hardware beceause it have old Software. The Hardware was new when the software came out which debian now have ;)

  • even debian testing or unstable is alot faster than mint or ubuntu so its not because of the software age

  • in the night its colder than outside

  • Nice :-)

But on the other hand it was not a really complete minimal install (eg. cron and logger are missing). Additionaly you skipped the partition work :-/ and the compilation time was sometimes a bit too fast (I would suspect a ccache in the background but I just finished a minimal install on an atom-pc so Iam not really sure :-)).

  • i neither use cron or logger xD

    partition work? mkfs.ext4 /dev/sda1 =)

it is not ccache or anything else used. Watch at the clock. The clock runs in real time and its a 100% stage3 and as you can se i never set up the usage of ccache =)

atompc is no pc, its a gameboy. This here was a Intel Core2Duo. It blows your mind to do this on a quadcore

  • Mmm.. Emerging on my Q6600 is nice.. Good distcc host too for my laptop.

  • @Maxdamantus that's EXACTLY what i do! same processor!

  • Cutting Bracken/Brisk Bob/Laird Of Drumblair (Celtic Fiddle Festival)

  • Hmm, I wonder what song this is...I like it.

  • Hmmmmm,I was like wtf, when I saw the upload date, and the date on the actual PC :)))

  • i see it too...... amazin xD i uploaded it before i taken it^^ i think its beceause timezone or something else^^ the video was uploaded directly after it was taken^^

  • Yeah :)

  • Beceause its inside an chroot environment.

Its no virtual machine, its my real system.

  • how you have a Desktop thing while setting the kernel and so on up?! Oo?

  • The gentoo install docs say that you should, if you want to play tux racer while you wait!

  • just do

    make defconfig

and than add "AMD PCnet32" to network drivers

    than all should work

But im going to do an Video "How to Configure Linux Kernel" i will explain there anything else

  • Do you happen to know whats needed for a kernel config in virtualbox? Particularly what busses ata/sata/ide/scsi and processor features get emulated?

  • Dont say anything about the music! Its one of the only 10 minutes YouTube standard background songs xD

  • What's the name? :P
