The individuals making it up may all be fantastic, wonderful folks on their own (I doubt it) but as a mass consciousness, they lose their sense of individuality and become essentially mindless. At this point, you partake, you pay. I have watched from the edges of mobs and seen the worst of humanity.

@9darkdays they used spears too. those bamboo polearms police use will kill you just as much as the little splinters of the wood the protesters were using. and the cops have armor. if they didn't want to get attacked by rowdy civilians, well then they shouldn't have become cops. the "nonlethal" weapons riot police use (tasers, water hoses, tear gas, rubber bullets, clubs) can and will kill you. if you get tased by 1 taser, it might not kill you. if you get tased by 5 cops at once, not so much.
