  • Drummer?

  • What tube station is that he waits for the train? Is that Plaistow station in London???

  • Incredible! Quite funny to hear that the last tune they played is a version of the tune "Hotel Le Hot" from Wheeler's album "The Widow in The Window" which came out in 1990. Even jazz musicians "recycle" their own material...

  • Hardcore seventies!!!

  • OK, it's a bit difficult to recognise some of the musicians under all that '70s hair but here are some names:

    Kenny Wheeler - fluegelhorn

    Norma Winstone - voice

Stan Sulzmann - baritone sax (he usually plays tenor)

Probably Ray Warleigh - alto sax

    Dave Horler - valve trombone

    Chris Laurence - bass

Almost certainly Henry Lowther (I think he's the in the blue leather jacket) and Derek Watkins on trumpets ( they all look like Dave Lee Travis to me)

    Ian Hamer - trumpet

    Alf Reece - tuba

  • @mu9cephei Wow look - harrow and wieldstone station in 1977 ! wow

  • Ps--a monster player I mean!

  • Great to see this, wonderful writing & playing---Alan Downey was a monster!

  • 70年代からこういう音だったんだ。素晴らしい。

His big band sound was established in mid 70s.

    Beautiful.

  • @trumpathon : he's Canadian.

  • my goodness. gnu suite is still one of my favorite sides of all time. so nice for this yank to hear and see this. thanks.

  • Thank you so much for posting this. Are any of the BBC Jazz Club Maida Vale sessions available on disc?

And does anyone have the full musician credits for this session?

  • Yes i can confirm that is my dad Alan Downey on trumpet - with the jewish nose and moustache.

Unfortunately neither Ian Hamer or Alan are with us anymore.

  • Yep ! That's bearded "Cockney" Stan Sulzman on sax alright.

Wonderful composition, arrangement and horn playing from The Master, Kenny Wheeler - none finer.

Great big band - leaves Duke and Count back in the dark ages.

  • Oustanding ! One of the best things I've seen on U-Tube.

    K. Wheeler is a genius.

    Thanks for posting !

  • btw.. I don't hear Heyoke in that tune... do you?

  • Hi OFunk,

Didn't know you were here! Guess whom I got this vid from? ;-) Thanks for all the music likewise. So have settled in a new place and visited the Mecca or so called Rainbow Studio? ;-)

And no, it isn't Heyoke. It is Gnu Suite. A lesson - don't believe the announcements! Do you recognize anyone other than the announced? Is that John Surman? And Chris Lawrence??

  • This is great - remember seeing it in 1977. Henry Lowther, Alan Downey (with tache), and Ian Hamer on trumpets, don't know the one nearest the camera, Chris Pyne in the trombones, Dave Horler on valve trombone, Stan Sulzmann on baritone, Ray Warleigh on flute and alto sax, Chris Lawrence, can't spot the drummer, and it sounds like John Taylor on piano.

  • Hi Senn, ;-)

I was just about to upload this myself! Was thnking about it over the last few days!

Your friend in Oslo!! Thanks for all the tunes over the years!

  • yep I think thats Chris Laurence on bass... not sure about Surman...
