for once i hear something from him that is not too bad.
But of course if we are in sin our righteousness, being filthy rags, counts for nothing. it is pointless, but for a different reason than that Wright invokes.
He goes on about the goodness of the creation, and so it is. But does he also speak at detail ab out the falleness of it, its cursedness and subjection to futility?
if not he is unbalanced in theology, and that is the definition of heretic
Jesus rose PHYSICALLY, Paul was translated PHYSICALLY, Enoch and Elijah were taken PHYSICALLY ... but people actually think that it's the spirit that goes to Heaven. So stupid.
@FAITHandLOGIC The physical body is for the earth. The spirit body is for the heavens. The dense physical body is not suited for the rarefied conditions in the heavens.
I just read his book "After you Believe". It's a good read if anyone is interested. He is correct that New Jerusalem is the end product but I don't believe you go to Heaven right away. I don't see how that's Biblical. The Bible calls death sleep.
@FAITHandLOGIC If you want to know what the afterlife is like, read "Life in the World Unseen", free download from the internet. In 1 Samuel 28:15, "Samuel said to Saul..." Was Samuel talking in his sleep? One of the problems with the bible is the contradictory teachings. In one place it says we sleep, in another it indicates we are awake and in full possession of our faculties. I think I will not trust a book like that.
@k0smon When reading the Bible, it's important to know of the particular book - who the author is, who he is writing to and the time span of which he is writing. There are no contradictions - especially in death/afterlife. Some of the writings are literal and some are figurative and poetic.
@FAITHandLOGIC You are a man of great faith if you can say there are no contradictions in the bible. Bart Ehrman's book "Jesus Interrupted", titles his second chapter 'A World of Contradictions'. It is 40 pages long. He wasn't just writing about nothing!
There is mis-information about the afterlife in the bible. There is no eternally lasting fiery hell. There are hellish conditions, they are dark and miserable. No marriage in heaven is correct, however
@k0smon The whole concept of eternal torment is heresy. It is not taught in the Bible. Jesus taught of the gift of eternal life for the believer and the non-believer to die or perish. It never says to burn forever and be consciously aware of it. The saved live and the unsaved die in gehenna (lake of fire) at the resurrection. Hell is from the Norse goddess "Hel" and it meant "to bury". It has changed meanings over the centuries. Today's "hell" is a lie.
Magnulus, your post is old, but I have to say: Wright's view on what resurrection is is anything but vague. He has a massive book called The Resurrection of the Son of God that makes his case more than clear. The resurrection of the body is the culmination of the healing of the whole person - it isn't just our "spirits" that have gone awry; our bodies are subject to death and corruption, and the resurrection of the body is God's final answer.
He's still vague on what he means by "resurrection". Zombies comming out of the ground? When I'm dead, I'd prefer to stay dead, and not be fused to a corpse.
That used to confuse me too. FYI ressurrection is a jewish 'end-time' concept - you know last days, dead will be raised for judgement - and they would receive eternal life. Early christians applied it to Jesus - it is 'new life', 'eternal life'. The risen Jesus is not just his old self (resuscitation), but possesses life of a completely new order (resurrection). Thus the end times have begun.
I assume he's speaking of something similar to the "spiritual body" of post-resurrection Jesus. Paul talks of it. It's physical, but has a radiant quatlity to it, and is superior in every way - walk through walls, etc. It is not reliant on physical processes, but on God alone.
Yes, I agree with this view. I think Paul's use of "spiritual" in that case refers to "supernatural", something beyond the mundane. Not to an abstraction. I definitely don't think it means that Jesus lives on as merely a happy memory, the liberal/skeptical position. I actually tend to be a bit post-millenialist moreso, if I framed my views in those terms. I think actually the modern Jewish eschatology, the "perfection of the world" (tikkun olam) is more accurate than dispensationalism
It's amazing how people still have some sort of adverse reaction against the idea of resurrection. Man evangelicals believe it, but only focus on the intermediate state and liberals, well, who knows what they think. If they believe in justice, they'd believe in resurrection.
That is awesome! The Jewish tradition is very much agrees w/ you! G*d created the heavens/earth - and it was may-owed tov! I believe in the olam haba we will be recognizable at resurrection by the admixture of spirit and body resulting in an immortal body (like Adam B4 sin), preventing us from decay, disease, and death as we live on a refurbished earth. Why the body? Because it is the crown of evolution and best adapted for experiencing the 3.33 dimensions here. Why the spirit? Infinity/beyond!
This is emerging church and a deviation from scripture. Men are wicked, sinful, God hating, God killing. And there is a eternal hell. "Let no man decieve you"
maybe it's time to stop taking scripture and wrapping it around your own "institutionalized" view point .... but taking your "view point" and wrapping it around scripture ... don't act like you got it all figured out
I disagree. We shouldn't as Christians subscribe to an "institutionalized" view point or a purely "self-created" view point. Rather, we should use Biblical scripture to create a world view that doesn't conflict with the absolutes presented in God's word. God gave us the Bible to be used throughout our daily lives'. He also gave us his word embodied, Jesus Christ.
