I can unfortunately report that I've travelled to the aikikai hombu dojo and have had the honor to uke for Endo Shihan. My experience with him was very poor and felt greatly disappointed. Before anyone says anything I was NOT playing hard to get, I genuinely wanted his techniques to work on me. They did not instead were totally ineffective, nothing like the magical display you can watch on here with his ukes. So I sadly feel the wonderful effective art of aikido is dying fast if not already dead
What exactly do you mean by ineffective? Was he unable to bring you down? I hardly believe that because I expierenced Endo sensei as well and I was unable to push or hit him. He always directed any force past his body thus broke my balance and he could bring me down with very little force. I had no chance to get my balance back and resist. To me it felt very effective.
hi Dumdideldai maybe it was just me but he could not bring me down instead had to gesture to me where he wanted me to move and fall down. My attack was not been directed where he wished and could not break my balance, he was putting what felt like a lot of force but I could move him and when I wanted, this happened a few times and left me very disappointed.
This led me to think his techniques where ineffective and I apologize if i have upset anyone but I speak from my personal experience
I'd like to share my experience. One classmate was a weight lifter. so as he know what the Sensei will do, he against him and he is so powerful, nobody could win. Sensei just smiled to him and say ah I dont like u. I think it's so simple that if its a real fight,u will not what the sensei will do, and evenif u know it, he can just use some trick to attract ur attention and then do any actions he want. Just because its a lesson so the weight lifter know what the sensei will do.
So to finish what I was saying.. Did you have a mind set of an attacker or uke whose goal was to attack. Or did you have an intention or ki flowing through your hands that was of observation. You see the thing is ;) Your attack might of notbeen an attack at all. no matter how good an aikio master is, he cannot use aikido to redirect ki if that someone's ki or intention is not of attack. your genuine ki connects with Endo's compassionate ki and finds peace. the fight is over. aiki manifests ;)
It is not easy to be acepted by Endo Shihan. He gives every one a chanse to feal his aikido but itt atkes long time before you kan experians the real thing. Butt itt is upp to you. You must be fokust an skilled. You must move to the right position and withold god kontakt. If you dont tak car of your self the exersise is meningles and remember sencei kan alvais finich you. But itt wood not be so polight and Endo wich not to hurt his students. He often remarks hi dont vant to do keiko style
actaully the problem was not with him nor you. i'm thinking it was your ki or intention. you see you state you wanted to his technique to work on you. so your ki or intention was not that of an attacker or of uke. it was an a ki or intention of a watcher or on looker. your ki did not have to be reidrected or changed because it was not harmful nor a ki of negative intention. thus uke creates aiki ;)
uke will always determine what will happen in the training or fight. Depending on the uke's intention a technique will stop half way, he or she will fall, and the most liked one by people is the uke will flip. in all cases uke creates aiki because it his intention that what the Aikidoist uses to manifest aiki. If the uke doesn't have a ki of an attacker then the end result will not be a flip or fall. instead aiki or harmonic manifestation will have already taken place. Peace has already formed.
@MrPinoy91 finally among all these stupid crap comments I find sensible opinions! You are perfectly right! Too many focus only on tori's movements whereas aikido exists in both uke and tori.
@MrPinoy91 That was a GREAT explanation in terms of how the UKE is the focal point of Aikido. The techniques in Aikido is dependent on how committed the Uke or the attacker is. If the attacker chooses to stop the attack halfway, then the Aikidoka has no need to commit to the techniques because the conflict has resolved, the Uke's energy has stopped.
aikirock06 said something like: "well 'trained' yudansha" in the sense of well trained dogs. :o(
It is clear, that aikirock06 has never trained with Endo sensei, and probably never will, so he won't be able to comprehend the nature of that form of communication between an 8th dan Shihan and these excellent Ukes! Go on training, aikirock06, maybe one day you will understand! Good luck so far!
Of course this is just an exercise but its not staged. Actually the idea behind it is very simple but difficult to execute. The uke tries to push Endo sensei's hand upwards thus uke pushes himself downwards if he is not balanced and centered. Endo sensei "simply" brings them out of balance and center all the time.
"Endo Shihan", with all my high respect himself, is a great living master and enlightens all other aikidokas. Thank you Great Master:) svs

Endo Shihan can drive his Ki whereever he wants.
