  • It does NOT mean as x goes up, y goes up. A negative slope of a line is directly proportional, yet as x increases y will DECREASE.

    What is DOES mean is that the change in x is proportional for an equal change in Y. The proportion is given by K. Since everything is in proportion you will always end up with a linear graph with either a positive or a negative slope.
