This could truly be THE best sounding engine ever made !! Followed closely by the Merc W125 blown straight 8 and Auto Union Blown V-16. The Auto Union was upto 6 ltrs though so doesn't scream like the BRM.
Sensational, thanks for posting. I've heard it a few times over the years and during my time as a technician on the Australian Joss Supercar project we used to play this on the stereo in the factory for inspiration. Never heard the in car portion before though, awesome. To me this era was one of the greatest in F1, the sound was amazing, drivers required huge balls and incredible car control.
I cannot even get my mind around the design. Four banks of four cylinders with 64 valves. How would you time it? What would engine management consist of at a time when transistors were still new? I am old, so I understand the cam driven distributor with contact points, but WTF? Amazing they even got as far as they did. This was not some high dollar factory, either, if memory is correct.

thank you, thank you, thank you for posting this incredible sound of the BRM. Tears are running down, I'm shivering and I get goose bumps when listen to this fantastic sound. Especially when the BRM is in a far distance it is indeed an un-earthly noise.
You have mixed the sound of the 1.5 litre V16 engine from the 1950's with the 3.0 litre H16 engined car from the 1960's. Easy mistake to make, but you can never mistake the sound of a V16 from 1952.
Oh im lovin this. cant find a good driving video tho :( sounds are GREAT i will admit) but can someone that knows answer this for me?, that transporter at 29sec. who or what made that? am curious
if i´m not mistaken , the displacement of this engine was 1,500 cm3. Which means rthat the pitsons were not much larger than a shot glass. The engine must have been built out of british bloody minded-ness becuas e the reciprocating weight was going to prevent them from winning any world championships. I have got a very good hint for you to keeping the nice old Engine in good shape with todays ultra dry eco fuels: Use 1:100 API TC two stroke oil / fuel mix as regular driving fuel, that keeps the old fuel-system gaskets, rubber parts, alloy parts etc... and cast iron metal surfaces of those vintage engines in excellent shape...and it also lubricates the valves and upper piston regions. Most Porsche vintage owners in Germany do so Also keeps carbs/injection and tank clean and rustfree!
The sounds of this BRM banshee are from the CD supplied with the book 'Into The Red' by Nick Mason... (drummer from Pink Floyd) who both collects and drives these classics! Fantastic book as has sounds of Bugatti 35, D-Type Jag, 250F, etc, etc - fabulous stuff
yes, yes, we all know that none of those picture are of the v16, but they're not all of the H16 either. @2:30 i think that'll be a coventry climax in the back of a lotus, and @2:53. still, who cares, it's still one of my favourite vids on you tube, just shut your eyes and pretend to be an f1 driver! an absolutely amazing sound.
@EricIrl they may well have been unsuccessful, but only because of one, really rather vital flaw when trying to be an engine for racing, they were both a shade too complicated for the technology of the time to make work reliably. but, they were both mighty, when they were running.
The UN-EARTHLY HOWL!! WONDERFUL to hear. I'd love to see one fitted with state-of-the-art electronic fuel injection and ignition and dropped in a late-model Brabam chassis and turned loose on Silverstone with Schumacher at the wheel!
@Shalinar45 That would ruin the BRM, did you know that they made very few, so I wouldn't wreck it with "State of The Art" electronics... Pure drivers car.
@Shalinar45 The fuel injection would kill the sound. :( It doesn't need one. It's 1500ccm engine anyway. However I'd love to see that engine fitted to my Catterham!
@Shalinar45 I agree 100%. The problem with this engine has always been just keeping it running consistently, and a modern Motec EFI and coil on plug ignition will clear that all up.
As somebody keenly interested in museology and the conservation of collections, I wonder how the featured engine block is kept dust-free.It appears to be mounted without any glass case covering it.Anything that complicated gets covered in dust very, very quickly.It must be a very labour-intensive exhibit if it is there long-term.I wonder if anybody here has any info.Many thanks.
Too bad the engine sound is from the BRM P15 V16 from 1950-1951
The H16 BRM from 1966-1967 didn't sound like this, and neither did the two engines have anything in common save for the number of cylinders.
The V16 was a 1500cc supercharged engine. The H16 was essentially two opposing V8's (thus the "H" configuarion) with 3000cc. Neither engine was very successful but the H16 was incredibly heavy, unreliable and only ever won one race with Jim Clark driving the Lotus-BRM in 1966.
Now THAT is engine sound. Not these crappy turbocharged Supras and Imprezas you find all around here as "best engine sounds". Oh boy, I would built an underground garage just for this car so people think Satan is rising from hell when the engine is being started. This would be the perfect car for Thor (nordic god of thunder) in the new Marvel movie. WHAT an engine sound, wow.
actually the H16 wasn't raced until the 1966 and 1967 seasons. Jackie Stewart hated it and said it was better suited as a ship's anchor than a racing engine.
In 1955-1959 BRM had a 2,5litre straight 4. The BRM P25
the H16 did NOT come after the V16. After the V16 BRM made the 2,5litre straight 4. After the ruled were changed for 1961, they made a 1,5litre V8 in 1962, with which they were champions.
Only Jim Clark ever won a race with the H16 engine. The American GP 1966.
i think i would pay... at least... if i had the money that is, 100 million dollars to buy this car and drive it everyday just to hear that amazing sound.
Jesus, i cannot think anything more exciting than this! Actual f-1 engines have a crappy sound compared to this magnificent piece of art. Thanks for posting, mate!
No no NO! The engine in the pictures is the H16 produced for the 1966 series in F1.
However, the SOUND is the BRM V12 produced in 1951/2.
They are completely different engines and eras! The latter engines IS in 'H' configuration being effectively two Eight cylinder engines with TWO cranksahfts! And incredibly HEAVY!
The 51/52 car was a V16......Anyway, you're correct proituk, the H16 wouldn't have sounded like the car in the sound clip. The early fifties car was supercharged, while the H16 was naturally aspirated. The H16 had no SC whine. Secondly, they were different engine configs. As you state, the H16 was two 1.5l BRM's lashed together and would have had different sound characteristics to a V16 unit. No doubts the H16 made an ungodly racket, but it wouldn't have sounded like the car in this clip.
@illman76 You are right, just as proituk: the sound is of the V16 of the early fifties. Unless I'm very much mistaken it had a two stage blower and was way too complicated to get running on all 16 cylinders for more than a couple of laps. Remeber: no computers then! I believe that this recording was published on the CD that was enclosed in the book ' Into the red' by car nut and Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason
@bijlus Just like to add: it's only 1500cc as that was the capacity limit for F1 in those days. And it ran at incredible revs: something like 10.000 rpm if I remember well ... The H16 engine was a very different kettle of fish. Anyhow: BRM was rather good at building VERY complicated racing engines!
actually 1500cc was the upper limit for supercharged engines. for normally aspirated engines 4500cc was allowed. Ferrari made their 375 model with a 4,5litre V12 for the 1951 season.
The driver at 0.47 is Jim Clark seated in a Lotus 25 Climax. He became te only driver to win a race with the H16 BRM engine - a feat he accomplished in 1966.
Hate to tell this to you, but the BRM V16 and H16 are two completely different engines. The V16 was raced in 1950-1951. The H16 in 1966-1967. Not to mention the first one was supercharged and had a 1500cc displacement. The latter had a 3000cc displacement.
It ran a two stage roots type blower . At full revs the distributors pumped out 96,000 spraks per minute. A normal passing out BHP was 485, but it reached 500 at times out of 1.5 litres, no computors in those days, imagine tuning it. I was lucky enough to see it running, i wiil never forget it.
Some of the pictures in the video are not of the actual BRM V16 engine itself or the same car producing these amazing sounds, so please do not use those pictures as basis for comment on the motor design or layout....
@IXIBobOhIXI LOL!! Yep same here!! With my head and body imitating the g-forces too! Pressing back into the seat... can't help but feel the speed just listening to this!
@partyman6666 no, it's not, that car is the 1967 BRM with the H-16 motor. This is a 1950's BRM with a 1.5L V-16, supercharged. The graphics are incorrect on the vid above
@doggydog153 Read the description of the video... It's stated in clear form that the pictures in this video are not of the actual car.. only the sounds are. I didn't make the video... only posted it here.
That would be the H-16 engine that you speak of with the 2 flat-8/dual crankshaft setup, and an idler gear between each of the 2 cranks. The BRM V16 had a single crankshaft with the pistons on the opposite ends of the crankshaft basically mirroring eachother from the center outward.
@Schutzstaffel23 No. It is one crankshaft. 16 cyl in a V configuration.Kind of like 2 V-8S one infront of the other, except one crankshaft and one 16 cyl block. Thus v- 16.
@0289XYZ : Well, I'n not sure about that. I believe the H16 had two crankshaft (as opposed to the V16). One of the problems that caused was that the centre of gravity was way too high. The other, obviously, that the engine was really heavy and overly complicated. BRM was very good at complicated engines!
It was far from marvellous. It was both heavy and unreliable. Too complex in fact. Jackie Stewart said the engine was better suited as a ship's anchor than a racing engine. Btw, the sound in this clip is from the 1950's BRM V16, which was a totally different engine.
@McLarenMercedes This engine sound really is wonderful! I've never heard one in real life before--wish I had! From the looks of the comments on this, there seems to be some question as to whether these are the sounds of the H16 or V16. I wouldn't know what each would have sounded like. I'm sure each would have been extermely complicated, and hard to properly tune, though! If this is the 1500cc V16, it amazes me that sixteen little motorbike-sized pistons could sound so courageous!
I read about how unique and memorable it sounded long before I actually heard it. I read a lot motorsport magazines which wrote a lot of stuff about what happened in the old days. Apparently the Matra V12 made a cool sound too.
Back in 1999 I bought Motorsport magazine which included a CD with engine sounds from Goodwood's festival of speed. There the BRM V16 from 1951 was included and I can assure you it made quite an impression on me.
Well, I have the BRM V16 sound on CD with engine sounds. I have also a DVD with famous historical Formula 1 cars, and there they start the V16 BRM. I've never read a single magazine ever saying the H16 from 1967 had a memorable sound. Fact is that most likely sounded like two BRM V8's since that was what it basically was.
The BRM V16 was immensively powerful. Some 580hp was seen on the dyno, compared to the 420hp Alfa Romeo had at the same time. Ferrari had 380hp.

The photos are of the H-16 BRM engines and BRM and Lotus cars that used that engine when the formula went from 1.5 L to 3.0 L for F-1.
In essence, BRM took all the internals of two 1.5 L BRM engines and put them in a flat ["boxer"] block.
Lotus was the only team to get a win with that engine.
Lotus got the first win for the new Ford DFV 3.0 L engine at it's debut in the Dutch GP 1967.

@Shalinar45 The fuel injection would kill the sound. :( It doesn't need one. It's 1500ccm engine anyway. However I'd love to see that engine fitted to my Catterham!
Vatharian 8 months ago
@Shalinar45 I agree 100%. The problem with this engine has always been just keeping it running consistently, and a modern Motec EFI and coil on plug ignition will clear that all up.

@Shalinar45 I agree with everything you said, but with one change. If he were still alive, God rest his soul, Ayrton Senna instead of Schumacher.

McLarenMercedes 1 year ago
Now THAT is engine sound. Not these crappy turbocharged Supras and Imprezas you find all around here as "best engine sounds". Oh boy, I would built an underground garage just for this car so people think Satan is rising from hell when the engine is being started. This would be the perfect car for Thor (nordic god of thunder) in the new Marvel movie. WHAT an engine sound, wow.

the screen is show about the BRM H16 made after the mythic V16
V16 => 1949-1952
H16 => 1953-1956
Don't mismatch !!!!
CUTTERbyPHOENIX 1 year ago
@CUTTERbyPHOENIX
actually the H16 wasn't raced until the 1966 and 1967 seasons.

And incredibly HEAVY!
proituk 1 year ago
The 51/52 car was a V16......Anyway, you're correct proituk, the H16 wouldn't have sounded like the car in the sound clip. The early fifties car was supercharged, while the H16 was naturally aspirated. The H16 had no SC whine. Secondly, they were different engine configs. As you state, the H16 was two 1.5l BRM's lashed together and would have had different sound characteristics to a V16 unit. No doubts the H16 made an ungodly racket, but it wouldn't have sounded like the car in this clip.
illman76 1 year ago
@illman76 You are right, just as proituk: the sound is of the V16 of the early fifties. Unless I'm very much mistaken it had a two stage blower and was way too complicated to get running on all 16 cylinders for more than a couple of laps. Remeber: no computers then! I believe that this recording was published on the CD that was enclosed in the book ' Into the red' by car nut and Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason
bijlus 1 year ago
@bijlus Just like to add: it's only 1500cc as that was the capacity limit for F1 in those days. And it ran at incredible revs: something like 10.000 rpm if I remember well ... The H16 engine was a very different kettle of fish. Anyhow: BRM was rather good at building VERY complicated racing engines!
bijlus 1 year ago
@bijlus
actually 1500cc was the upper limit for supercharged engines. for normally aspirated engines 4500cc was allowed. Ferrari made their 375 model with a 4,5litre V12 for the 1951 season.

I definitely have to agree about the sound! Absolutely wonderful!
Weren't some of these BRM's seen (and heard) in the great movie "Grand Prix"?
I've always thought H-16 was a better description of the layout than 'V-16'.
Fantastic sound, but somewhat heavy, complicated and slightly un-reliable. They never won many races.
JGMagoo 2 years ago
@JGMagoo

I was lucky enough to see it running, i wiil never forget it.
climiac 2 years ago 17
Negative, not roots blower. It's a Centrifugal-type blower developed specially for the car by R-R.

This marvelous engine has two crankshafts. It is like two flat-8s, one atop another.
ThatMiserableCat 2 years ago
@ThatMiserableCat
That would be the H-16 engine that you speak of with the 2 flat-8/dual crankshaft setup, and an idler gear between each of the 2 cranks. The BRM V16 had a single crankshaft with the pistons on the opposite ends of the crankshaft basically mirroring eachother from the center outward.
partyman6666 2 years ago 4
@partyman6666 so its the same idea as a boxer engine?
Schutzstaffel23 1 year ago
@Schutzstaffel23 No. It is one crankshaft. 16 cyl in a V configuration.Kind of like 2 V-8S one infront of the other, except one crankshaft and one 16 cyl block. Thus v- 16.
0289XYZ 1 year ago
@0289XYZ : Well, I'n not sure about that. I believe the H16 had two crankshaft (as opposed to the V16). One of the problems that caused was that the centre of gravity was way too high. The other, obviously, that the engine was really heavy and overly complicated. BRM was very good at complicated engines!
bijlus 1 year ago
@partyman6666
Correct, the Cizeta-Moroder V16T to be exact. I dont know how much info exists on it though.

@ThatMiserableCat
It was far from marvellous. It was both heavy and unreliable. Too complex in fact. Jackie Stewart said the engine was better suited as a ship's anchor than a racing engine. Btw, the sound in this clip is from the 1950's BRM V16, which was a totally different engine.
McLarenMercedes 1 year ago
@McLarenMercedes This engine sound really is wonderful! I've never heard one in real life before--wish I had! From the looks of the comments on this, there seems to be some question as to whether these are the sounds of the H16 or V16. I wouldn't know what each would have sounded like. I'm sure each would have been extermely complicated, and hard to properly tune, though! If this is the 1500cc V16, it amazes me that sixteen little motorbike-sized pistons could sound so courageous!
ThatMiserableCat 1 year ago
@ThatMiserableCat
Anybody I played it to say the same
McLarenMercedes 1 year ago
@ThatMiserableCat
