Outstanding recording, my favorite version and one of my all time favorite songs. I played the "Judith" CD so much I wore it out. One of my best memories was having this on my Walkman [b4 MP3s] and listening to it as I jogged near the Golden Gate Bridge, and yes, the moon was rising!
Sorry Ronstadt lovers. Much prefer the mountain-stream simplicity of Collins' reading. Just touches me more. Mind you I never GOT Linda Ronstadt.....always sounded whiny to me.
This is the first version of the song that I ever heard, and it's still far and away my favorite version. And 'Judith' is one of my all time favorite albums.
such a sweet, sonorous voice and such a tender rendition of a song that speaks of yearnings, longings and something elusive that's impossible to hold on to. accompanied by lovely piano and strings that make up a beautifully crafted and moving piece of music. magic!
I heard this sung by Celtic Woman and knew it must have been done by someone else first. When this video came up, I couldn't believe it--I got this LP for Christmas, and hadn't realized I already knew the song! Her version is definitely the best! :)
This version has all the irony, sadness, and depth that one could ask for. Judy Collins is playing piano and was a child prodigy. She was playing Mozart concertos and Liszt pieces in her early teensa great musician, songwriter, and singer.
I agree, I think the beautifully sad lyrics like the one you find in this song is best sung with a tender voice like that of Judy Collin's. Moments like these don't have to be presented in an absolute dramatic way, because the words and music together express itself.
my mom died 2 years ago - predictably - still unexpectedly.she was so conservative, yet i found this song on a tape.she wanted send in the clowns played at her funeral, this was 2nd song on that tape.i know shes no joni or janis - but she helped my mother relate...thank you for helping me find it again.
Judy's a genius. She didn't compose songs (ala Joni) or scream her head off, but she's got a lovelier voice and a more memorable way of interpreting a song than either, and that's an art unto itself. It's wonderful she brought your mother some happiness, and you too.
I have been looking for this version of this song for so long now!! Thank you so much for posting this . . . God . . . this song still makes me cry . . . makes me think of my mom when I was little
Myself, I love BOTH Judy Collins, AND Joan Baez! Were I to pick one or the other, would be like choosing which of my brohers/sisters is my favorite! Sure hope your cousin returns safe and sound, Scout4Me!
I'm sorry but I do prefer Joan's version. I've always found that Judy Collins' way of singin was too "perfect". I prefer Joan's voice because it is more "brutal", more from the soul.
If amethysts could sing, they would sing like Judy Collins. Chapeau!

i like both judy's and linda's versions. the latter sounds more country, the former truer to judy's folk roots.

as much as I normally love Judy, she doesn't hold a candle against Radka Toneff on this one, sorry no offense!
