This song was included on a Paiste demonstration record (LP) given away for free on their demonstrations, at least I got it like that in Spain... it included a few songs with players such as Jeff, Jack DeJohnette and others... I must look for it, sure it is among my old records at the basement floor...
I can remember buying a Toshiba 'walkman' back in the day, which came with a demo cassette featuring music by David Paich. Not sure if Jeff played on it. Think I still have it somewhere...
@palatica They were perhaps new Paiste releases at the time of the recording (what, 85-ish?) ---And there may have been prototypes as well, but not entirely sure. I do hear some cup chimes used---maybe a splash or something....
@palatica What, for this demo!??? Ok so the 2002 series must have just been released to the masses --Reading the booklet that comes with his instructional dvd---he used 602 hats and a 602 ride, and sig-series everything else for THAT. ps: At the time of "Kingdom of Desire" (1991-ish) sessions -he was using Paiste prototypes, according to a few who were privileged enough to be in at those sessions. Wish I had been--that would have been very cool to see!
@RaincloudmusicTFS6 But... hey... isn't this demo created in the early 80s? At that time the 2002 Cymbal series was so popular, and those cymbals were used by Jeff for Toto-IV albums and tour (it is mentioned in Toto website for Jeff's equipment. And in this demo I heard some cup chimes played instead of Splashes and Chinas. I'm sure this is 2002 series!!!
@palatica There's even some footage of him circa 1982-84 in Japan rockin' a set of Paiste "RUDE" hats!!!! : Greg Rule did Jeff's last published interview with DRUM magazine before Jeff left us. In that interview, Greg noted several paiste proto-type cymbas used during the "Kingdom of Desire" sessions. Google search might bring that interview up. My FINAL piece for my own kit? A Paiste 20" medium-dry ride to go with my Zildjian setup! ;-)
This song originally came out on a little flexi disc in Modern drummer magazine waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay back in the early eighties.....i remember playing it ón my record player and then playing along and trying to do everything Jeff was doing....I was about 12 years old then! I actually had the original flexi disc until about a year ago when i finally threw it out.....i knew it would be online somewhere!
Hey All...As a long-time fellow Toto, Lukather, Porcaro freak, I thought you'd all like to know where this track came from (as I've owned this CD for a while). The tune came from a "James Newton-Howard" Sheffield Labs CD, along with a half dozen or so other very cool tunes of Jeff playing. I'm pretty sure youcan get this CD fo a reasonable price through "Audiophile Imports" (in Maryland)...their store is on the web. Hope this info helps...happy holidays and a healthy New Year to all..:>)
i got the james newton howard cd from amazon at a reasonable price! it was worth it the playing is awesome as you,d expect with porcaro,s jeff, steve and dad joe pluss paich and james! a short album but quality not quantity!
This was a plastic record insert in Modern Drummer demonstrating Paiste Cymbal products. The issue date was somtime in the early 1980's. Jeff Porcaro..........One of THE great groove masters!
I got this answer from Rich Mangicaro: "Mike, I believe this is from the Paiste Sound sheet collection - we used to offer 45" vinyl sheets, featuring various players...Jeff was one of them. Bruford was also included in them. This recording dates back to the early 80's, I believe."
Hi, this is an exclusive recording for a Paiste cymbals demo where Jeff and David played. This track is also a part of a James Newton Howard´record called like himself and recorded in studio live. This is also played by drummer Gavin Harrison in a modern drummer festival, must see,,, also incredible.
Jeff´s sound, tempo and feels are simply unique, God bless him.
This is "Slippin away" which was released on the James Newton Howard and friends-CD. One of the most groovin beats of Jeff - unbeatable cool tune. Do you have any clue where your version is coming from? Thank you for keeping Jeff´s legacy alive!
Sorry, I don't have any idea where is this coming from, I downloaded this song long time ago from the Napster, and I found it in a data CD I burned long time ago.
@deathrockerlawyer I got this answer from Rich Macgicaro "Mike, I believe this is from the Paiste Sound sheet collection - we used to offer 45" vinyl sheets, featuring various players...Jeff was one of them. Bruford was also included in them. This recording dates back to the early 80's, I believe."
@deathrockerlawyer ... This song was from a sound page in the magazine Modern Drummer . They often included what they called " sound pages " . Those floppy LP`s in magazines . Terry Bozzio had one . Peter Erskine had one . And Jeff had this sound page featuring the Paiste focus within the Paich composition . I had a subscription to MD at the time and I wore this sound page out ... RIP Jeff , we all love you .
This was an acetate "playable insert" you could carefully rip outta Modern Drummer magazine back in the day---jeff had an endorsement with Paiste for majority of his professional career. I remember keyboard mag doing the same thing --stuff you could play/listen to/learn from. Betcha Paiste's sales skyrocketed after this sucker was played a few times. ;-) Some guys could make Mattel toys sound good....
This version was recorded on a "leaf disc" ( a very thin and foldable disc) and were given to all the Paiste customer... it's never been intended for commercial use but only as promotional and it was available in to all the shops selling Paiste products.
I know it because my older brother bought a Paiste HI HAT and they gave him that leaf disc... it was 1981 or so...
@funk76 : It came as a free black plastic paper 45 single in Modern Drummer magazine back in the early 80's! WITHOUT A DOUBT....I use to play the shit out of my copy!!!!!
listening to jeff has taught me so much.. he is a huge inspiration.

Pocaro is one who enhanced what GADD laid down on time and groove less is more.
Billy Ward reminds me of this playing approach as well

Great Demo! And I like the way Jeff demonstrating the cymbals here.
Is anybody know what type of Paiste Cymbals Jeff demonstrated in this recording? Any details about it? I wish...

@RaincloudmusicTFS6 I believe the cymbals are Paiste 2002 series, or some combination with GIANT BEAT and RUDE series.

@RaincloudmusicTFS6 But "Kingdom of Desire" is started in 1990-91. Does it mean that his cymbal set hasn't changed since Toto-IV era?

Jeff is without question in my top five drummers list.
I hadn't heard this song until tonight, but it sure as hell sounded familiar. Check out Sixes and Sevens by Robert Plant 1985.
