@jjpierren I have 2 they are great dogs but you have to be ready for their strong personalities and they are very smart. They require a lot of attention if they don't get it they get bored and find something to entertain themselves, lol. females tend to be more indepedent and males tend to be a little needy, go figure. Awesome dogs would get another in a heart beat.

@Gwazzaify usually they cut them at a early age, my dog sammy is the same tail too, but the ears flap over the ear like a triangle i geuss a natural defence against debris.

This shows the jrt's level of intelligence - he's nipping the shepards tail to distract and get the toy. I once watched my jrt move a chair to jump onto a table to get to a counter to get some food left there... Pretty amazing breed!

@TheMarudin I've got 6 JRs - had 9 litters. Trust me breeders dock their tails. They do it because JRs are bred to go into fox holes to catch foxes. A longer tail can get broken in these tight quarters & broken tails are VERY painful.

Maybe your puppy had an unusually short tail? Or maybe your breeder had it docked & it was healed when you saw him/her again? They do it when they're only 4 or 5 days old, after that a major blood vessel develops and it becomes hazardous to dock them.

If you watch Dog Whisperer, you'll see Cesare Millan does the same thing as the German Shepard. The GS is trying to mark it's territory but taking ownership of the toy. Then he tests the puppy by putting it down and nipping at it when it comes to take it. After a few attempts the puppy leaves it alone because the GS establishes the toy as his.
