Apply paint to your brush and wipe most of it off till its hardly visible. Then slowly with minimal pressure move the brush over your model.

Hehe, close. First you load your brush with paint, then wipe it all off on a piece of tissue paper. It will look like all the paint has been wiped off, but if you brush it on the model, it will pick up any raised areas. Try it on a few scrap models for practice.
