@Fgueroa007 The guitar is a Mason Bernard MB1. They were made between 1990 and 1992 by Bernie Rico - of BC Rich fame. Tony McAlpine was their first and possibly only endorser. MB made about 250 guitars....
The closest thing you can get to an MB1 is a BC Rich ST model. The ST body is the same body that was used for the MB1. Hope this was helpful.
Young Tony here once worked in a garage I believe... was allowed to noodle between customers... he is also quite happy to play without fret markers... not bad for one of the shred obsessed eighties lot... no internet to distract them from practise you see! ;O)
MacAlpine you son of a bitch! You came up with a lot of my licks two decades ago! I feel so... unoriginal now. The only songs I knew by him before now were Tears of Sahara and a kickass keyboard solo. Apparently half my style has already been had twenty years ago. FUCK!
way more than a "touch" of chorus imo.... it's actually very thick. Also some digital delay in there too... classic 80's style guitar sound. You're definitely correct on the rest.
i always find that i need a near equal distributed tone for live, the cymbals and bass guitar drown out my lows and highs so i usualy crank the mids for a real cutty tone, that could just be my single coils but.
scooped mids have their benefit when playing rhythm though. But yes, you need some mids to play leads otherwise it sounds like you're playing in a fish bowl lol
i wish i knew how to get that 80's guitar sound , like this one (even though its 1990 on this video), jason becker and paul gilbert use. I love that kind of distortion it sounds so clean. i would really appreciate if someone told gave me a patch for rp50 to sound like this. :D
You'll need chorus and delay, that's about it. Most of them were using some kind of hot-rod Marshall typ amp. But the chorus is the key to an 80's sound.
I've found that if you have about equal amounts of Trebble and Mid but scoop the bass, you get a nice sounding amp and really cuts through other instruments in the studio and live.
recently ive been doing alot of chromatic stuff..just to see how fast i can do it and since then my fingers have got confused when im trying to other stuff lol doh!
Wanna know how you get really good. Play a lot! I didn't ever really use a bunch of excercises. I just played so much. Improv mostly, and I got a great ear, fast fingers, and a lot of endurance.
Long-shot question: assuming that you are a hardcore Macalpinite, would you happen to know if Tony sung vocals for the songs on the imported version of Violent Machine?
@bhamm21 improving your chops. basically, you wanna practice until your body hurts, what you are after is a "burning" feeling in your fingers, you DONT stop playing. what this is (the burning feeling or aching) is your body telling your hand to get stronger and you want ur hands hurting for as long as possible. example some people play all day (and night)! dont lose ur job, it does take many years.
@bhamm21 Ive been playing for 4 years now and it took me 3 of those years to realize the truth that always stared me directly in the face. There is no way to improve any aspect of your guitar playing other than practice, practice, practice. Practice does make perfect, Its said that it takes a musician roughly 10,000 hours to master their instrument that being said just sit down with your guitar and practice. If you aren't reaching your goals in time you need to practice more.
@johnnysitarphillips steve vai said when he was youger he would spend 15hrs to entire days mastering the smallest of techniques. buckethead and paul gilbert most likely did the same thing.
@johnnysitarphillips I would recommend that you visit the wizard of shred, here on the tube, but also check out his website. There are lots of very helpfull information on how to practice and what to practice. I have bought two of his programs, and I have had progress like I never thought possible. You don't have to buy anything, though, read through his blog and see if there's anything you can use. You might get disencuraged if you think it's all just hard work for many years.
@bhamm21 I have one if it's still relevent after 2 years lol. Check out Black Diamond by stratovarius and learn the beggining on guitar instead of piano
I still have this instructional video. I've had it since it came out in 90 I think. Friends over the years keep offering money for it but I love the the mini-songs on it!

What's your take?
