  • what makes this distinctive 80's tone? is it the chorus?

  • @mojoefly

I would say the chorus, the wide vibrato sections, and plastic plectrum.

  • His tone is awesome!

  • @Fgueroa007 The guitar is a Mason Bernard MB1. They were made between 1990 and 1992 by Bernie Rico - of BC Rich fame. Tony McAlpine was their first and possibly only endorser. MB made about 250 guitars....

The closest thing you can get to an MB1 is a BC Rich ST model. The ST body is the same body that was used for the MB1. Hope this was helpful.

  • What guitar is that, a Carvin? I love the tone he gets here!

  • Macalpine and Holdsworth. Aah very very good.

Learn your theory people. It unlocks doors.

  • great video!!!! Mac Alpine is one of my fav guitarists.

  • shawn lane & tony mac..... probly the best musicians out there.

  • Young Tony here once worked in a garage I believe... was allowed to noodle between customers... he is also quite happy to play without fret markers... not bad for one of the shred obsessed eighties lot... no internet to distract them from practise you see! ;O)

  • I really would like to know what f/x is he using... amazing sound. very digital.

  • I really would like to know what f/x is he using..... amazing sound. very digital.

  • Sinfonia, is your name a reference to a project Al Dimeola had called World Sinfonia?

  • I don't understand what he wants do communicate.

  • MacAlpine you son of a bitch! You came up with a lot of my licks two decades ago! I feel so... unoriginal now. The only songs I knew by him before now were Tears of Sahara and a kickass keyboard solo. Apparently half my style has already been had twenty years ago. FUCK!

  • High Quality porn music :D

  • e monir licks!!!

  • che de que disco es esto?

  • Love the cheesyness of this 80's tone!

  • @edvinatorinvertedd i second the love for 80s cheesieness :)

  • Sounds VERY ERY much like the song "Echoes" by Joe Satriani

  • the rythem is so goofy sounding.. lol yay early 90s.. good fucking solo though.

  • any suggestions on what amps, effects etc i have to use to get a sound like this?

  • Compression and a touch of chorus. Plenty of distortion and a midrange boost to get the notes to jump out like that.

  • way more than a "touch" of chorus imo.... it's actually very thick. Also some digital delay in there too... classic 80's style guitar sound. You're definitely correct on the rest.

  • dude what type of effects is he using???

  • Probably some compression and chorus to fatten the sound.

  • the "Not of This Earth" Satch sound

  • I think Tony is betetr than Satriani but I guess everyone hsa diffirent opinions and tastes

  • oh My God! he is Tony??? haha he was so different!

  • Is there a way of buying/getting this instructional video??

  • Ebay. I bought this when it came out in 1990 and I still have it. The performance stuff by Tony is amazing!

  • I have it on .MPG, if you want contact me.

  • This guy is just a musical genius

  • The amazing thing with Tony is that it sometimes sounds like tapping - but when you see it, it is not. ^^

And he plays piano like he plays guitar... *sigh*

  • That backing track reminds me of The Goonies lol

  • I love the tone. to me, tony is one of the best players in the world

  • @baaaartto

To anyone who appreciates golden playing for that matter.

  • very tasteful soloing... its one thing to play fast and quite another to use speed as a tool of expression. Thumbs up!

  • is he using a carvin or esp??

  • I think thats a BC Rich...

  • BC but he he uses carvin now

  • i think he's using kremer

  • Me too...I have tried many BC's and they don't deliver this kind of sound. Kremer, on the other hand, tends to be more fluid and clean.

  • bc rich

  • Echoes anyone???

  • That's the first thing I thought. Sounds just like it!

  • the problem is remembering this music......at first you think it's garbage random playing..

but this is actually a song, he can repeat every note exactly.

    lol crazy stuff.

  • But he knows the scale hes using, so he can switch certain notes at any given time to give new life to an old song.

  • I guess you mean there really aren't any hooks to catch the listener. Such is the downfall of jazzier stuff, but man is he slick!

  • i think is detune effect or chorus

  • i love that sound, what is it?

    miami vice

  • i always find that i need a near equal distributed tone for live, the cymbals and bass guitar drown out my lows and highs so i usualy crank the mids for a real cutty tone, that could just be my single coils but.

  • scooping the mids means to basically take the mids out of the EQ.

    Like this-

    High: 8

    Mid: 1

    Low: 6

  • scooped mids have their benefit when playing rhythm though. But yes, you need some mids to play leads otherwise it sounds like you're playing in a fish bowl lol

  • this guy have the gift

  • it is as if all of the good guitarists suddenly fell off the face of the earth a few years ago

  • ik totally.

  • i think you just don't know where to look

  • My name are stupid. I cant to spell they words propally.....fitte

  • i wish i knew how to get that 80's guitar sound , like this one (even though its 1990 on this video), jason becker and paul gilbert use. I love that kind of distortion it sounds so clean. i would really appreciate if someone told gave me a patch for rp50 to sound like this. :D

  • You'll need chorus and delay, that's about it. Most of them were using some kind of hot-rod Marshall typ amp. But the chorus is the key to an 80's sound.

  • Thx Black Jack I'm interested too in getting that sound I'll try to look on that way=)

  • line 6 chorus pedal is quality for cheap price

  • Don't forget to have plenty of mids.

Most jackasses scoop their mids, but the mids give you a defined and clean sound on high gain

  • Finally, someone realizes it.

  • Comment removed

  • I've found that if you have about equal amounts of Trebble and Mid but scoop the bass, you get a nice sounding amp and really cuts through other instruments in the studio and live.

  • he´s a very guitar player and keyboard player

  • yep, i'm also very.

  • what band is he from?

  • He's in a band called The Devil's Slingshot.

He used to perform with Steve Vai.

  • Planet X, original line up.First 2 albums.

  • recently ive been doing alot of chromatic stuff..just to see how fast i can do it and since then my fingers have got confused when im trying to other stuff lol doh!

  • You're not practicing it correctly then, and be sure to use a metronome.

Because you know what? Bad practice is WAY more detrimental than no practice at all.

  • Wanna know how you get really good. Play a lot! I didn't ever really use a bunch of excercises. I just played so much. Improv mostly, and I got a great ear, fast fingers, and a lot of endurance.

  • I hope you used a Metronome for some of it :)

  • Some people swear by the metronome, some people actually have a natural sense of timing.

  • Ah, but who is more accurate :D?

I think it's best to practice with both, you should get the exact motions and execution down before you tangle with the dreaded Metronome :)

  • this owns :D

  • for some reason ive had alot of trouble picking every note lately anyone have a good excerise for me?

  • slow down and examine what you're doing wrong!

  • Long-shot question: assuming that you are a hardcore Macalpinite, would you happen to know if Tony sung vocals for the songs on the imported version of Violent Machine?

  • he didn't. i forget the guys name but it's not tmac. tony has way better pipes anyways 8D

  • @rmsolympic1

He sure didn't. Can't remember who did, but I know it wasn't him

  • @sinfonia11 Absolue Truth.

  • @bhamm21 Chromatism...

  • @bhamm21 improving your chops. basically, you wanna practice until your body hurts, what you are after is a "burning" feeling in your fingers, you DONT stop playing. what this is (the burning feeling or aching) is your body telling your hand to get stronger and you want ur hands hurting for as long as possible. example some people play all day (and night)! dont lose ur job, it does take many years.

  • @bhamm21 Ive been playing for 4 years now and it took me 3 of those years to realize the truth that always stared me directly in the face. There is no way to improve any aspect of your guitar playing other than practice, practice, practice. Practice does make perfect, Its said that it takes a musician roughly 10,000 hours to master their instrument that being said just sit down with your guitar and practice. If you aren't reaching your goals in time you need to practice more.

  • @johnnysitarphillips steve vai said when he was youger he would spend 15hrs to entire days mastering the smallest of techniques. buckethead and paul gilbert most likely did the same thing.

  • @johnnysitarphillips I would recommend that you visit the wizard of shred, here on the tube, but also check out his website. There are lots of very helpfull information on how to practice and what to practice. I have bought two of his programs, and I have had progress like I never thought possible. You don't have to buy anything, though, read through his blog and see if there's anything you can use. You might get disencuraged if you think it's all just hard work for many years.

  • @bhamm21 I have one if it's still relevent after 2 years lol. Check out Black Diamond by stratovarius and learn the beggining on guitar instead of piano

  • i lvoe how he is rocking the jerry curls and shreding like mad! XD

  • you know that "jerry curl" is a hair product rather than a hair-do right?

  • idk much about jerry curls but that still is jerry curl right?

  • they had crappy cameras back then but the best music

  • hahah yeah now its like completely reversed haha

  • amen to that brother ..

  • man they had crappy cameras back then

  • nice video man! try to see my legato string skipping videos, im playing only from one years! wat do u think!!! enjoy!!!! remenber to comment!

  • very holdsworthy sounding....awesome

  • I still have this instructional video. I've had it since it came out in 90 I think. Friends over the years keep offering money for it but I love the the mini-songs on it!

  • holdsworth sounding? really? i don't hear it but its good nonetheless

  • it sounds a lot like holdsworth because of the extreme legato; how could you not hear that?

  • i guess. holdsworth plays way more chords though.

  • No matter what the musical context, Tony kicks ass.

  • Damn straight! Tony is awesome. If I've said it once.... The Holy Trinity of shred; Yngwie , Tony and Vinnie Moore!

  • Yngwie, MacApline, and Vinnie. You got it!!

  • Yngwie, MacAlpine, Vinne and Rob marcello:)

  • you'r right sounds like a very sexy porn movie xd

  • and he kinda looks like the guy who would be in that porn with that hair of his

  • hahaha i remember it it was call planet sex hahahaha ...

  • if that's a reference to planet x then LOL

  • yea hahaha.... i love planet x there such a sweet band an i think that derek made the right move after leaving DT

  • wonferful legato!!! very clear, defined and so fast...XD

  • GREAT Bluesy feel! Love it!

  • oh my god!

  • this is so 80's and i love it

  • Tony was and still is one of my major motivations to play guitar!!!

Please check my videoclip and you'll notice that he inspires me a great deal.

Hope you like my clip and please support with your vote if you can. Details on 'more info'.

    Cheers

    Claudio

  • I like lts of instrumental stuff like VAi and Satch but never listened to Macalpine until now and I'm sad I haven't because hes amazing

  • tony macalpine is fucking awsome

  • Awsome stuff man!!!! great tecnique, beautifull note choices!!!

  • Sounds like porn music. Love it.

  • yes, but without this fast legato stuff;)

  • I love this! It's great to see some semi-improvised work from Tony back in the day; styles develop and I think Tony has definitely got better, but there is still nothing quite like hearing some of his early work when he was only in his 20s.

  • hanep galing ah...bow!

  • muahaha

steve vai got a lot to learn from this guy :)

  • if you don´t know...he play with steve vai......DUMB

  • that's why i said so...baka!

  • For anyone who has looked at the tab at the end of this video, is he hamerring on from 0 (or the open low E string)for the first note? If so, I presume he is doing the same thing for the E note of the A string, the C note on the D string, the E note on the G string, the C note on the B string, and the E note for the high E string. What's your take?

  • Yeah I think so too. I just played it and it sounded pretty good. And considering that the video is called "legato tune", I presume this hole chapter of the video is on hammering on and pulling off.

  • If you did that you may want to post a video showing the rest of us how to do it. I don't see how someone could make that sound good.

  • he is pretty good!

  • I think the real master is Master Bates like bassman5123 says.

  • that was a nice Mason Bernard.

  • Whoa

  • more 80s porno music.

  • master in the master tony is the best the one ... the raven best song ever and much more ... yeah viva coquimbo chile.... sindempart la mezquita ....

  • um no

  • No...Micheal Angelo is a guitar masturbator. T-Mac is a guitar player. BIG difference.

  • pretty accurate description i must say. still love MAB though

  • as do I...but not for the same reasons

  • He's been around way longer than Michael Angelo Bates.

  • bates. lol thats hilarious. michael angelo batio does guitar masturbate his guitar so it totally makes sense.

  • lol michael handgelo masturbatio

  • nice mullet

  • holdsworth is the legato king imho... tony is an outstanding guitarist and keyboard player though

  • Welll.... He is Better than me. I know that XP

  • very goodddddddddd

  • I learned alot by actually taking lessons from this dude.Amazing guitar tone!

  • I don't like the hair but his tone, is killer i think...

    HIS RIGHT HAND IS AMAZING!!!!!!!!!

  • UGH.. Your comment... UGH

  • I dont think its that tonys better, I think its that steve does what he wants, hes not trying to impress anybody.

  • MaCalpine owns legatos.Check out Steve Morse instead of Steve Vai.You'll see the difference.

  • man i think tony is a more better guitarist then steve vai but im not saying steve sucks just that after a while it seems like he just plays around to much and its not really fun or musical but i do respect him though (hes the one who got me started on guitar)

  • fooL! steve owns!

  • im just saying i think tony is better to me

    but steve still owns

  • im not trien to be a prick but "more better" is not propper english

  • oh and i saw your crossroads vid and if a its yours its sick

  • well.....tony and vinnie have diffrent playing styles all together

sure they both shred but the diffrence is very diffrent

  • I know they have different playing styles, I own both their instructional vids. I am referring to their picking hand when only doing staccato.

  • ahahah the difference is very different

    classic

  • who do you think has the better picking hand technique? Vinnie or Tony? I am going with Tony because he uses less motion while Vinnie has to use the whole forearm : (

  • i agree but not for the same reasons. i honestly dont care at all if a guitarist uses his forearm. i do it.. i have tryed not to a million times but when you learn a cirtian way it seems impossible to break that habbit.

  • WHO do you guys think has a better alternate picking technique between only Tony Macalpine and Vinnie Moore? Tony or Vinnie?

  • Thats hard to say, because they Both SHRED.. But, if I HAD to choose, I would say Vinnie, because he was America's answer to Yngwie...

  • does anyone no the name of this vid

  • read the description of the video...?

  • thanx

  • How about that Rockman X100 tone!

  • beautiful :D

  • love the back tune, sound is sooooo 90`s.

    great technique

  • i like him.

  • underrated guitarist

  • Awesome tone. Damn.

  • Wow! Amazing..

  • totally amazing.... its definitely modal.... anybody know what mode its in?

  • buttsechs-he's playing on a D minor scale over a droning D vamp. In this clip he's often ending phrases on an E - the second scale tone, and the G - the fourth scale tone; both are scale tones tha
