All objects on earth, regardless of shape, mass experience a downward acceleration of 9.8m/s2 or "g" when you don't take wind resistance into consideration. As there initial velocity is zero, wind resistance would have minal effect so the stones and water should both fall at the same rate. As it seems the water is "holding up the water" because the relative velocity of water to stones is zero and both are falling at same rate.
