I cant even believe people are standing there watching this bullshit. This is nothing but self aggrandizing egotism at it's most retarded. Oh I'm gonna get a bunch of loud ass equipment and make it feed back while I yell into it. The people who are into this are just as dumb as the people who make it. So fuck all y'all before any nasty comments
@joedell71 If no one watched it, they wouldn't know whether they liked it or not. Chastising people for watching something is stupid. Anyway, it's interesting watching him subtly manipulate fields of sound into feedback patterns and waves of catastrophic noise to convey emotions. This video catches him in the middle of a performance, so you kinda miss all the build-up. Obviously it's not for everyone, but dismissing it and everyone who likes it as dumb is childish and intellectually lazy.
@joedell71 first of all, this isn't what most people would enjoy listening to. second of all, everyone can't like the same thing. people who are offended by that are a bunch of losers.
That is one insane performance! He really went all out there, I like it. Also I have a little question, does anyone know how many copies of The History of Aids by this guy was ever produced? I'm just curious.
@squezey1 Dom, great as always. Great quote from him in As Loud As Possible (incredible noise magazine, definitely check it out, it's about 160 pages in the first issue, pretty much a book honestly) "The worst days of my life have been coincidentally some of the best Prurient performances. Which goes back to an idea of this not being entertainment, while it may be entertaining or fun, that is not the intent, the intent is to build and express an emotional atmosphere." 1000 copies were produced
@AlbatrossOfficial1 I could tell that preforming noise like this live could be painful at such high volumes. I could only imagine what it is like to actually be at one.
I mean like what song is being heard in the video?
Thanks!
P.S. Cheers, I love Noise music! :)
I'm going to try and upload a lot of noise music... And this includes music by prurient, since there's only like 2 or 3 videos showing just his music and the original artwork... I already have some up by him, and Macronympha... :D
It's funny. After hearing this, I feel old school gangster rap is higher in art and beauty and is quite underrated, especially compared to this, considering that groups like NWA came from broken homes and the streets to rap about life being in gangs, pimps and drug dealers.
Now, I don't mind ambient works or noise works for that matter. But this just don't make any true statements about the relation between art and meaning.
It's cool that we can escape the subject of "MUSIC vs. NOT MUSIC" altogether when it comes to Prurient. I quote from Prurient himself: "People dont look at what I do as a simple act of anger or aggression, it is an attack but it is not an attack on the audience, its an attack on myself that the audience is witness." So basically, his performances are not to be interpreted as musical or non-musical, rather a fight with oneself that you are a witness to, that just happens to use musical gear.
In fact, I find it strange that he has his own label, and is selling Noise records to people, who are in fact "hearing noise" during their everyday-lives.
I don't have to buy this guys albums in order to hear the beauty "of sound and noise". I can go outside and hear the roaring scream of a dumpster truck, or the sound emanating from the computer I'm currently using and find that beautiful and not pretensious.
I don't like it when people create something they claim or supporters claim is artistic or beautiful, such as PRURIENT. This ain't art.
True artists are the ones who intend to put meaning in their works, unlike PRURIENT who I could think gets their "pretentious preformances" is from mental unstable-ness or drug-use which IMO, is not art.
Bela Barok, progressive rock bands Anglagard, Gentle Giant and King Crimson define dissonance and atonality better than what this guy does anyday.
You aren't being fair. I admit that Prurient doesn't fare well on youtube, but still I feel compelled to defend him:
There is meaning to this man's work, and while your comments on the exoteric nature of pure noise are right on, that isn't what this type of noise is approximating. rather, in being pure and simple, but LOUD and abrasive at the same time, Prurient is gathering the utmost raw power with the most modest means. it's sublime in a sense, although not neccesarily beautiful.
Honestly, if you all think that music has to have rhythm and melody, then I'm not sure whether to feel more sorry for you or for the people who have to hear/read your shitty opinions.
Here we go again. You people think you are so deep because you are one of a select few who find an enjoyment in listening to loud, jarring, and discordant noises, and that anyone else who doesn't just "doesn't get it." In reality, you're just a pretentious dick who is no different from the hipsters that plague mainstream music. Just because it's not common doesn't mean it's edgy. Get over yourself.
@TheSwarmaster I don't think I'm edgy, I just get annoyed when people post comments that effectively say "I don't enjoy it, so therefore you're just pretending to enjoy it"
im sorry but i just didnt hear any musicallity in it.The whole time i was thinking, "what's that noise and when is the song going to start?" and then the video was over and i was like What The Hell?

That's the result of somebody artsy trying to push the boundaries of what's defined as "music". Too bad it sounds hideous. All exaggerations aside, that really does hurt the ears.
"the border between music and noise is always culturally defined—which implies that, even within a single society, this border does not always pass through the same place; in short, there is rarely a consensus. By all accounts there is no single and intercultural universal concept defining what music might be, except that it is 'sound through time'."
I just listened to Prurient online and have come to the conclusion that this video is a horrible misrepresentation of what it actually sounds like. The sound on this video sounds like compressed air going past a microphone and that's because it was too loud at the performance for the recorder to pick up properly. Prurient is definitely valid and the textures and depths he works with are of particular interest to me, but his work is too polarized, overexposed and harsh to be one of my favorites.
Hem... man... you seem an expert... ^^ I have to find out some mp3 from his band Vegas Martyr... you know "The Female Mind"?... I need it!... Sorry for the fucked up english...
What the fuck was that?! That wasn't music! That was bloody static and screaming! There is no way that this is the future of music. Hell no. This is just a bunch of crack heads with nothing close to musical talent!
actually, i think someone did that. have you ever heard of the blue man group? i think that's there name. they just take a buch of random objects and use them to make really cool music.

This gives me shivers up my spine. I swear to god, this is the future of music. Anyone read The Art of Noises? We're all getting tired of the same instruments, the same eight notes, keys octaves, harmonies, consonance, it's tying us down.
um, actually dissonance took over about 100 years ago. ever heard of schoenberg, dodecafony, atonal music, emancipation of dissonance, serialism, xenakis etc.?
dude, I buy at least one album a day, varying from all genres (i mean this,i am not one of those annoying wishy washy music fans with no actual taste. noise is music the same way anything else i listen to is. Yes it is very abstract, loud and offensive and can be very abrasive but if you are in the right frame of mind it can be as enjoyable as any other music whether its hectic and mindless or thoughtfull and beautifull so i think its you that knows little about music.
my favorite performers (not musicians!!!) are: fe-mail, grunt, the new blockaders, whitehouse, atrax morgue, hive mind, lasse marhaug, anne gillis ... so, i know a little about noise! i like it very much! but it is NOT MUSIC!!! IT IS ANTIMUSIC!!! ...right? ....your records are empty without mentality!
Ok I thought you were one of those total idiots who just says "this isn't music I am not going to listen to it" and won't listen to it ever again after hearing 30 seconds of an album. Also you are right noise is like an antimusic in the sense it goes against everything conventionally musical. But i will still listen to a record or go to see it live in the same way I would with the other stuff I listen to.
