This quartet, with a new member, is now called LoveNotes and they will be among several quartets representing Region 12 (N. Cal. & Nevada) in the International Competition in Seattle this October. Kind of good, but overdone in many places. Harsh harmony in places. Badly sharp notes, too much falsetto where it should not be (such as the last note of your 'song' where you nearly screamed...that note should have been lilting and graceful, not painful). Really, why play with the words and make them into a performance like an old toothpaste commercial? Opera-esque broadway should not be turned into a quartet spectacle. Nothing against you personally...I am just a concerned Phantom fan.

It's harsh, but if it needs to be said, I will say it...they are good singers (not exactly phenomenal, but good) and I have nothing against them. They just need to get more practice and maybe try to extend their range naturally or leave those falsetto notes to the professionals.

The sad part is, they really didn't do it very well at all. Sure the first phrase was fine, but other than that it was too much 30s commercial, not enough quality Phantom.

Barbershop quartet is just not the right medium for these songs.

It's not that I don't like it because it is a different interpretation alone, it is that it is done badly. The tune is off in places, the notes forced (not natural sounding in any way), the whole thing overdone in places (as I said before in my first comment).

Nothing against the girls of course. I'm looking at this objectively now, without any subjectivity to cloud my judgment on the piece.

I think it's a personal thing really, if hand movements are what you feel, that's what you do. Whenever I play any instrument, be it sax, piano, trumpet, guitar, whatever, I move with the music, just as a byproduct of the feeling I put in.

I received an email from someone who was put off by my assessment of this performance. I see my comment has been removed. LOL. I understand these girls are young. I performed the actual Phantom of the Opera in three different companies & this arrangement is terrible. The arrangement isn't good. I emailed this video clip to one of my buds who is currently playing the Phantom. He laughed and told me his going to forward it to Mr. Lloyd Webber. He thinks he will find it funny & amusing.
