i changed my 1997 3.8v6 for a 5.0v8, the enginge runs but it never shifted. i parked the car because i didn't want to smoke the transmission. would the B&M HAMMER SHIFTER solve my problem?
Hey MustangAficionado, do you know exactly what model this is? Is it the Hammer shifter with the Quicksilver ball? Or is it the quicksilver shifter? Please help?
Sosso basicly with this kit it allows the auto 4r70w to downshift safely ?? If so how?sorry for the noob ??s. I'm just trying to get an underdstanding since I been manually shifting my 4r70w for four years now and I it would be nice to do it safely with out the strain on the trans..thanks for your time
@greekooo3 Yes, except with this it only lets you shift once up or down no matter how hard you crank on it, while the stock version you run the risk of down or upshifting too far. This work best, in this case, in tandem with a set-up like mine or a manual valve body so that shifts (especially down) dont cause added wear or heat.
..@MustangAficionado ...thanks for info...I manually shifted my 4r70w for 4 years/or 50k miles and held up fine..but I did break it after so long..greats trannys for autos..later bro and thanks again..
@greekooo3 yes but no chances of shifting to far and well "missing" a shift isnt a problem with these, as it to me seems like the car has a heck of a lot more power driven from 1,2,3,D but thats just wat i think
@spankme242 4 stick?? no it is a replacement for a auto... if you drag race and auto is what you want. this is a great mod for the automatic tranny ive slipped in to reverse its horrible.
@branman2012 no i rebiult the rear end with 31 spline axles and new diff with 410's. but the tranny is cool, it shiftd fine, it runs smooth as well. i thought i would have blown it up or something
the b&m hammer shifter works 79-04 mustangs with auto tranny is not hard to install one and its just for looks pretty much i worked on mustang and i problably install about 15 of them already if you want your auto tranny to shift like a manual you need a manual valve body is not hard its like installing a shift kit kind i recommend a c4 tranny for mustangs
and i wanted to know ... what the fuck is that kinda of a shifter :D haha
i actually was at this amusement park and ... you know im a mustang kid, so you know that i HAVE to play driving games ... and i saw this game wich have the same shifter as you do and im like '' wtf main ?! '' by the way i KILLED ! the game :D
hehe so i was wondering .. can u explain this to me ? easy explain ? how this kinda system works ? :] thaaanks lucky ass mustang dude ..
Uhm, sure I'll try. It works on an automatic transmission - it shifts exactly once up or down no matter how hard you hit/pull it. From 4th down to 1st and vice versa. For people with (hand) built transmissions and other mods like I do, this sort of set-up is preferred. Plus it looks a lot better than the stock shifter arm out of a Ford Taurus.
do you have a cover where your CD player used to be. I have a headunit like you but there is an unused CD player. Any idea where i could get a box or something to slide in there?
So does mine, but its in the left side of the rad. and therefore sucks ballz. Technically it does cause more heat, with on command shifts you don't have the ability to sustain line pressure needed for clutch pack overlap - and therefore it causes more friction. With a proper shift kit or changing of the valvebody on mustangs this is maintained. Not sure on your car.
hay i got a 94 ford mustang gt 5.0 4 speed automatic im in the market for a stage 2 shift kit and a b&m shifter will this heklp for my turbo cuz u was told that its not wise to put a turbo on an aoutmatic cuz its hard on the tranny but im wondering if i do the shift kit and hammer shifter will my trannie be able to handel it plz get back to me plz i need to know
Shifter or shift kit wont help reliability. You need a trans cooler up front, preferably stacked player. Shift kit will just firm up shifts through being able to sustain gear and clutch overlap - it'll actually cause more heta to be made. A cooler is what you need.
For one, it's a .70 gear so acceleration wont be stellar. But mainly because the 3-4 gear actuation is via band clutch into overdrive, this band clutch is very abrupt and rudimentary. With enough power you can either bust the band or twist the input shaft stub.
OMG!! I have an 08 mustang gt, and it's automatic. I am sick and tired of plain ol' automatic and this gave me a ray of hope!! but doesn't manually shifting an automatic ruin the transmition? I see you doing it, but is it messing up your car?
it can cause more heat, but mine is built and has an independent trans cooler. What difference with the up shift is the transmission isn't expecting it so the line pressure can't sustain clutch overlap as long (if i remember right) and downshifting causes just in general more abrupt shifts and more heat. Certain shift kits can sustain this overlap. I don't know if your 5R55 auto trans has a B&M shifter like this or not.
I've been looking all day and night, and no, B&M doesn't have a 5R55 auto shifter; which blows because B&M has great looking and great performing shifters. TCI has one specifically for the new mustangs. It's called the TCI Street Fighter Ford Mustang Ratchet Shifter. The only thing is that it looks gay to me. i wanted to have one that looks kinda like yours. But I hear B&M is working on a mustang later model shifter
can you just rachet it down 3 times from park to get to drive then drive normally like a regular auto im thinking of getting it, and my mom pulls my car into the driveway alot so she'de be waking me up alot if she couldnt handle it? so is that possible? if so is it worth it? add any real function or just looks?
do you run street tires? when you say warm up these tires and you have street tires your wasting money and doing yourself some harm, only warm up drag tires
I was cleaning them off - they had a bunch of dirt on them from my u-turn at the dead end. I always clean them off first at the track too, although in this vid i got carried away for the fun of it.
Cool.. how difficult/long was the install? I have an A4 transmission in my trans am, kinda wish it was an M6.. So basically when your shifting up yourself its just going through the 1-2-3-D like the stock shifter right?
Yes, that's how it works. Will only allow you to shift up or down one gear at a time. The install takes awhile 4 hours or so. Do they make this kind for your trans?
i have always ment to ask this. when you get a shift kit, build the tranny, or j-mod, will the time between when you physically shift and when the tranny actually shift decrease, like the delay when you shift and when the car really shifts?
Talking about the delay between the demand and the execution of the shift? Not to my knowlege - the actual shift itself becomes shorter/more firm but there will be a delay between asking and it doing if it's too low in the rpms for the window the auto requires to upshift. Way to fix this is to use a manual valvebody in which you can shift whenever in the rpm's - but the delay will be the same amount of time it takes when you see me downshift. As it will downshift no matter the rpm for me.
Wow this is pretty cool. I have an 04 GT 5spd. I don't see many of these around but it makes the auto kickass. What makes this different from using the stock shifter and manually running through 1-3? Is your 4th gear your overdrive gear?
hey i have a transgo stage III full manual shift kit. Will this still allow me to shoot through 1-4 gears even though my tranny doesn't automatically shift from 3-4 anymore (or any other gear for that matter)?
It will allow you to shift 1-3 manually and not have the trans decide to downshift or up sift at a different time in 3rd (D). But 3-4 will still require the push button.
do u have to let go of the gas to shift up or just stay on it and it will shift in just like in auto. also do u no how that clutchless system works do u put that on a auto or manual trans.
Correct, the red button is just like your o/d button which locks out 4th gear which you shouldn't being going full throttle into anyways. Only thing it changes is the process of selecting gears, the rpm window and line pressure ect is still all decided by your tranny. So unless you build your tranny like I did the shifts themselves wont change.
I started in Neutral. Then shifted down to D-2-1. Accelerated in 1st then to 2-3 then let off - it automatically shifted into 4th (o/d) i pressed the red button locking it out hence shifting in third. Cruised for a bit, then braked and shifted into second. That clear it up any?
The thing is and I haven't tried this yet but it should work. If you set your shift points low with a tuner anytime you make a manual shift the car should shift almost instantly seeing as it would go way past your programmed lowered shift point.
ok...i'm tryin to figure out exactly how this works (and i have read previous posts, but i'm still a little confused). i understand how the delay works and everything, but in the long run, do you actually get to choose when it shifts? or is this set up strictly for cutting down shift times?
if you shift too early based on the given throttle it will wait until it wants to shift. If you want to hold it past where it'd normally shift with the current amount of throttle this allows you to then tell it to shift later - which it will by command. Also good for downshifting, which it does more or less on command
you can leave it in D to shift when it wants to. Or you can manually shift it 1-3 and the red button is for 4th. It will do it via your command if you are already past where the tranny would have shifted with the current amount of throttle, if you shift before then the tranny will wait for it's own self to shift.
Yeah, i dont like T handles, or chrome for tha matter - lol. This is the B&M quicksilver knob - im pretty sure all B&M knobs will work. And others im sure
It looked like you didn't even put it in reverse or neutral, looked like you went straight from park to the 3-2-1 selection. Is this just the viewpoint or did you start it in neutral or what? Just curious
You're right. I thought i had it in park, so i lifted to paddle to bring it past reverse, then I remembered i started it in neutral - so i just went down twice to 1st. Good eye!
I think a manual can be shifted as fast...but def not as consistantly. Its about preference as the auto looses more HP to the wheels than a manual and weigh a lot more. Its about how much abuse your willing to put your car through..(How deep your pockets are
I agree that automatics have a higher power drain, but a properly set-up automatic will always shift faster than a manual. At the same time, I've seen some people shift a manual faster than I can see- they just snap.
At the same time, manuals are MUCH more fun, but automatics are definitely better on the track if you have the power to use them.
Auto have different positive and negative attributes. And both kinda suck stock (the auto more so). But i just want to point out to people who notice a delay from me pushing the up the shifter and the gear change that during that period that car is still accelerating so it's not like a clutch - therefore the literal shift is only a fraction of a second regardless of how long it takes from request to gear change.

Good eye!

It's a coup. Basically all the bolt-ons available, a built auto with 3200 stall, and 3.73 rear diff. different heads/cams/intake to come.

Automatics shift faster than any manual driver. That's why.
dawrr 4 years ago
I think a manual can be shifted as fast...but def not as consistantly. Its about preference as the auto looses more HP to the wheels than a manual and weigh a lot more. Its about how much abuse your willing to put your car through..(How deep your pockets are

I agree that automatics have a higher power drain, but a properly set-up automatic will always shift faster than a manual. At the same time, I've seen some people shift a manual faster than I can see- they just snap.
At the same time, manuals are MUCH more fun, but automatics are definitely better on the track if you have the power to use them.
(well, performance automatics- not slushboxes)
So, it is about preference- just like you said :)

Just the OHC 4.6 that came w/ it - plus almost all the bolt ons you can get for it + gears and a PI intake man.
