  • I saw REK last year about this time(Dec. 2010) in Mission, Tx...Bordertown along the rio grande river. I think he had about as much of a goodtime as the crowd there.

  • First class entertainer

  • FREE EARL

  • Shades of Gray! Sweet!

  • @rrichardson0515,... uh yeah,.. I kinda figured that out,....but thanks anyway

  • Hell yea.

  • "shades of Grey" so cool. REK has a great history with this radio station in California that basically got him known outside of Texas. It's called KPIG, and it rules. stream it free and see what i mean kpig dot com

  • @jedellis100

I really like REK album #2 Live Dinner. Check it out.

  • I'm fairly new to country, I've always been a rock guy really, which makes me ignorant about country music and its different sub-genres I really dig Robert Earl Keen and some of the well-known traditional country artists like Roger Miller, Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard, etc. REK off-kilter songs appeal to me, does anyone have any recommendations to which album of his I should start off with and/or any other country artists I should explore?

  • @jedellis100 Hank Williams III you should really check out then.

  • @jedellis100

If you don't know Steve Earle, you should look him up, though arguably he is as much rock as country. Also - Elizabeth Cook, Shelby Lynne, Justin Townes Earle (Steve's son), Jamey Johnson, Band of Heathens, to name a few. Some good sites for finding such artists are No Depression (was a magazine, now a website), Twangnation and Saving Country.

  • @jedellis100 If you're into great songwriting with a more mellow feel, you should definitely check out Bruce Robison.

  • @jedellis100 just listen to kpig radio! sounds like what you want. kpig dot com/ free trial

  • what album is this on?

  • @briargoatkilla

    picnic

  • how did this guy ever figure out so much of my life and we never even met ??????

  • 8 ppl cant tell what good music is. So much songwritin talent. and a trure texan.

  • He is cool!

  • He is cool!

  • Robert keen, aaron tippin, and rodney atkins and Decyfer Down are gonna be at our county rodeo this year. its gonna be badass

  • who are the 8 losers that don't like this video? LOL

  • @MountainGyspy Democrats!! LOL

  • Comment removed

  • Wow

  • I looked up REK in the encyclopedia.. it said, "REK is a badass. that is all" lol.. what else do ya need?

  • See You There Masten! Greenstreets I think...'never seen them in that place, could get rowdy in'aire!

  • Can't wait to see them tommorrow night in Greensboro!!!!!! :D

  • looking forward to seeing them (great band too) in Augusta Ga. 3-27-10. His guitar player Rich Brotherton is from Augusta...2nd time seeing them...great live band

  • I spent the summer of my lifetime in Austin TX. God bless Austin and its people. Hope I'll make it to the ACL once in my lifetime.

  • i just heard this song last night with my dad and every since i heard it i've loved it!

  • REK is a great storyteller kind of songwriter. Personal favourites are I'll Be Here For You and Over the Waterfall.

  • @ol49rrrrr I'm more of an "I'm coming home" and "Corpus Christi Bay" guy! but hell yeah.

  • the idea that Robert Earl Keen has a "small but loyal following" or that he "hasn't quite made it," is false.

he's played Austin City Limits, the Ryman, big venues and small, et al. he's a platinum selling artist. he's managed to maintain an air of accessibility, while creating great music, and will sustain it long after the dust has settled.

  • the song title is "Shades of Grey"

  • song title?

  • what a Great story teller!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Robert Earl Keen, Billy Joe Shaver, David Allen Coe - they all would have made it big if they just would have dropped their middle names.

  • sooo... which one didn't make it?

  • Hey Kenny!

  • REK always plays at Hardly Strictly Bluegrass, which is a free concert with big names (Guy Clark, Peter Rowan, Emmy Lou Harris, Dolly Partin...Elvis Costello, for some reason) put on in Golden Gate Park in San Francisco.

I never missed REK at HSB when I lived in SF. He always plays in the evening of the last day, and his show is fun as hell.

  • REK has a small but pretty loyal following. IF you see him down south his gigs are full of drunk college kids. See him up north and it is an older crow who actually enjoy his music, not just his "scene".

I really like "felling good again"

  • you obviously havent been to the Lone Star State to see him play

  • please please please come to buffalo new york ,been wanting to see him for years

  • He is playing at Water Street in Rochester TONIGHT. If you leave in the next couple of hours you can make it.

  • He was great on Imus yesterday - don't miss "Merry Christmas from the Family" or "Five Pound Bass". REK went to A&M at the same time as Lyle Lovette - I think they were neighbors or lived in the same dorm or drove down the same road at the same time or something.

  • Just heard this guy this am for the first time while watching Imus on Fox Business. He's really good.I like his style a lot.

  • jf1941 He is awesome I luv his music

  • this was a GREAT album -- "Picnic" -- it came out on Arista Austin, a sublabel of Arista. I worked this record as a college marketing rep for BMG. I LOVED THIS DAMN RECORD.......but the company never put much of a "push" behind it. If you can find a copy of "Picnic", BUY IT.........

  • first time ive ever heard this dude. lordy shit this guy kicks ass.

  • Welcome to REK!!! He is the bomb. Take a look at Road Goes On Forever. Gravitational Forces and Farm Fresh Onions are two really good CDs and there is a new one out today. See him LIVE if you get the chance.

  • New album is fantastic. I'm gonna see him on Saturday!

  • good song.we where so messed up we dident know if we where drunk or stoned!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • The man, the legend, ROBERT EARL KEEN!!!

  • Long time fan. Robert if you read this please consider putting a fiddle back in the band! I will be a fan regardless but ....

  • i agree he is still amazing but the band is missing something without the fiddle REK please bring it back.

  • Brian Duckworth was the man!

  • Yes he was and I know he isn't ever coming back I just think Robert would do well to get another fiddle.

  • This is good stuff. I never listened to him much before now, but it looks as if I'm hooked.

  • This guy is on NPR right now he is hilarious

  • he's on wait, wait don't tell me right now 5/30

  • Folks, i was just scrolling down thru the comments and was compelled to thank all of you for the nice comments and feeling the way i do....sometimes these message boards can get mean...congratulate yourselves!!!!

  • Rich Brotherton is one of my favorite guitarists. More people should know about him.

  • the Bonnaroo schedule just came out, Todd Snider, REK, Merle Haggard-same stage, back to back to back.

    gonna kick some ass

  • My favorite Austin skykine;I miss it.

  • Fabulous.

    Great singer and performer!

    Thank you!!!

  • i'll just bet he's a fan of Joe Ely

  • i'm seeing him thurs night...3rd time-love him..

  • Some few of us from PA think hes great, he's up there on my list of people who i want to see in concert

  • REK and todd snider are the main reason i'm going to Bonnaroo

  • I love those guys... they're amazing!

  • i went to school with this guy

  • One of my favourite songwriters. Kick-ass band too!

  • Sounds like a musical biography for the idiots I went to high school with.

I'll be seeing REK tomorrow night in New York City!

  • I seen this guy in the Blue Ridge Mountains, i had never heard of him. It was the best show i had ever seen. He is now one of my favorites. The guy is a master storyteller. His band was so tight. I would love to meet them. Hopefully I'll see him in SC.

  • cool song! anyone got the tabs?

  • I do it on acoustic w/out the capo like this:

    Am, C, G verse

    F, C, G, Am chorus

  • The similarities between Robert Earl and 1980's Paul Kelly (check it out) is astounding. Lightning does strike twice, just on different sides of the planet.

  • I cannot seem to find a video for "What I Really Mean" DOES ANYONE KNOW WHERE ONE IS ?

  • Damn Right!

  • yes yes very good

  • so does he change his hiar a lot or is that some one else in the other videos on here

  • seeing him ACL in nine days!!!!!!! hell yeah!

  • this is the first day that ived hered rek big fan now what is this song called

  • "Shades of Grey" It's on the Picnic Album

  • Good jam!

    I like!

    Get it on!

  • hey, who knows where i can find the tune that goes "I got high and I got in jail"?

  • The song is called "Walkin' Cane" and it's on the album Gravitational Forces.

  • Robert Earl Keen is a legend in Texas! Seen him at least a dozen times all over South Texas.

  • Yeah, he plays shows at stadiums in Texas, but go to another state and nobody's heard of him. Except the people with good music taste.

  • He packed out a mid-sized venue in NYC a month or so ago.

  • Comment removed

  • Yep, I was at that show. March 2nd at Terminal 5 in NYC's upper west side. At least a couple thousand fans, He had the 3-story venue rocking and everyone knew all the words. Amazing!

  • I know he's really popular in Louisiana

  • i know, he is.....but only in the honky-tonk/rodeo circuit it seems.....in texas he seems to be a more college phenomenon, but in Louisiana he get's a more signature artist recognition it seems....

  • ok well i actually met REK at a private party but i didnt know that he was this big star so me and my friends were all just asking like stupid questions

  • Hi folks,

I'm a songwriter and just posted a new song here at Youtube. Please come by and listen/watch.

    Thanks

    Phil

  • Go Rich!

  • he sounds pretty effed up

  • what this song called?

im seeing him with the north mississippi allstars this june its going to be tight

  • Shades of Grey

  • Litte sister brought her new boyfriend...he was a Mexican.

    Hilarious!

  • REK kickes ass. me andsome friendsrode our Harleys over 3000 miles, to see him perform at the Executive Surf Club in Corpu Christi, Tx. We had seen hi several times, out west. Never seen him in Texas. What a great time!! The party never ends!!!!

  • seein' him at Stubb's in Austin in 2 weeks...can't wait!

  • Thanks for the tip. I saw Dylan at Stubb's last September. I'll have to see if the old lady will let me go see REK, assuming tix are still available.

  • REK is the best singer song writer we have today. I have seen him many times. Each better than the last. Not only is he talented, but he is the nicest person you will ever meet.

  • REK is the most underrated country singer

  • Yeah DBT rules their coming to ST Louis on 29th cant wait.

  • REK is the best. I love the Front Porch song....He is a great storyteller...Although alot of the songs he does are not original....He is still great.

  • awesome, absolutely awesome

  • God Bless Texas

  • one of the best story telling songwriters ever.....REK!!!

  • great song. one of the best story tellers.

  • REK Rules!!

  • I saw him at the South Padre International Music Fest in Nov. he played on a floating stage. soo neat!

  • R E KEEN RULES!!!!!

  • he was better in the bush!

  • Can't wait to watch him headline in South Padre in November!

  • one of the greatest fucking song writers ever!!!

  • storyteller deluxe...the best I've ever cared to listen to on a consistent basis. I too agree with you.

  • i agree - songwriter or story teller.......he's a classic. and really good in concert too. he's gets the crowd involved.

  • listen to the drive by truckers they do the same things, tell stories with their songs. you should like them.

  • Yeah. The Truckers kill, as does REK. I'm in SLC, and he's coming for like the 4th time this year. I go see him every time. His band totally kicks ass.

  • im seeing him with dave matthews band next wednesday

  • im sorry, dave sucks

  • REK He's the man.

  • great lyrics and pickin

  • hey folks.... what's the tittle name of that song already? I forgot it! thx

  • that's "shades of gray" from the album "picnic"

  • Have seen REK twice and 80% of the crowd knew most of the words to all the songs a great time for all

  • Hes playing at the Woodlands Pavilion in Texas on September 21st. Along with my favorate band of all times Dave Matthews Bands ! I cant wait !! Anyone know where row AA seat 1 is ? Is it far left or far righ on the left ?

  • His singing is so bad it's good, it's haunting when he wants it to be. I love the guy . A unique talent.

  • i Saw him at the houston rodeo last year with ccrw and i was expecting ragweed to kill it, and then keen to bring me down soft... man was i fucking wrong ragweed kinda sucked, and Keen blew me away hes a genius and a cowboy poet, by far my favorite texas songwriter

  • I saw REK in LA a few months ago (with cross canadian ragweed) and he completely rocked the place.

  • I saw him in Park City, UT about a month ago. It was cold, about -10. He came on stage wearing rubber snow boots, old jeans, a gold shiny shirt, a sports jacket and a baseball cap. It was hilarious. He was great and his band really kicked ass.

  • Hey folks! Lets keep REK under the radar. This band is GREAT and of the cult faithful (and probably contrary to REK's opinion) we really don't want him to become too famous. It is nice to go to a rodeo and see him or in a club without having to fight off the ticket hounds. This band is a true blessing so let's hope and pray they keep n keepin' on just the way they are. God bless.

  • Good singers/songwriters in the Southern-Southewest-American Spirit are much appreciated and needed. Watch out, it will be the next "cool" thing. REK has my ear.

  • Saw REK a couple of years ago in Augusta-best dang show I have ever attended (and I'm in my late 40's-seen the Stones and all the big acts). I highly recommend seeing him live! It is a pity that corporate radio (other than JohnBoy and Billy) refuses to give him airplay, guess the 'hat acts' need the airtime.

  • In my opinion, the best REK song ever. Certainly the most underrated. And this live version is just awesome.

  • Outstanding! I've yet to see REK but I'm going too soon. And, damn, how good is his guitar player? Thanks for sharing this, dude.

  • How much fun is a R.E.K. show ? LOTS !
