Rome's no match for Alexander The Great's strategies. Lucky for Rome, Alexander died early. It wasn't they would and the KSA would be conquered and the rest of the Europe.... So sad Alexander died too early. Good for the barbarians.....
dante was right, the deepest parts of hell are reserved for traitors and conspirators..... "knives in the senate house"....such cowardice is unforgivable.
This is actually quite well done; it's nice to see a proper battle line and gradual advance instead of the Hollywood riots that pass themselves off as historic battles.
can you imagne how the adrenaline must be pumping whenyour the first guy in the frontline with ur buddys hand pushing u forward and the relieve when the whistle blows
Great series, but they portrayed this battle very incoherently. The Roman armies were well organized and regimented, then at 4:20 they show the battle dissolving into a free for all brawl.
So if it is Roman fighting against Roman and they have the same uniforms, armor, and equipment how do they tell who is a friend or enemy in the chaos of battle?
@CrimsonGuard1992 Well back in the day each legion or army had their own codeword for civil wars, so they literally had to say the codeword each time they engaged in a duel with another soldier during a battle
At the end I just love the part the legionaries just go into testudo and then he yells shit and then they charge against maybe a legionary. Legionary = 4800men = 10 cohorts = 480 in a cohort.
how can shows like this get cancelled yet all those shit reality shows like big brother prosper. that's how you know the human mind has devolved into a lower form of idiocy. stupid plebs making up the main populace, they should be thrown in an arena XD
It only got cancelled because the BBC couldn't afford their side of the deal with HBO to make it, its a shame, but big brother is much cheaper to make.
Both armies decided not to use pilums because the two forces were both veteran armies and I guess they though they would not be worth using or dishonorable to use against other Romans or something like that.
" Rome was a great series, but the English actors in it can't seem to give up that Shakespearean style of acting they are bred with"
This commenter *has* to be American. HBO/BBC selected english actors epecially to depict the classic feel of the time, and the aristocracy in which the main characters lived. What do you want, seriously? "Like, OMG, lets totally march on rome" ?? Give me a too-english depiction over an americanised one anytime.

No they picked English actors over American because American audiences expect any film with people carrying a sword and shield to have foreign accents. It wasn't always like this. Before Hollywood started outsourcing talent movies about Rome always had American accent. It is also about money. British actors work for less. The guy who played Marc Antony in this said they were called the White Mexicans of Hollywood.
I disagree. I think you have a culture of american movie makers insisting that the lead part go to an american- Ben hur- Charton Heston, Spartacus- Kirk douglas ..I could invoke this precedence all day, which was nothing more than to appease american audiences and bring them in to the cinemas. Fact is the supporting casts of these sorts of movies were dominated by english actors for their ability to lend an air of aristocracy and a flavour of acting that cant be done by US actors.
It has nothing to do with aristocracy every single character in this show had an english accent including the plebs, if you even know what that means.HBO an American company designed it this way. "Moreover, anything with a sword-and-sandals theme offers employment opportunities to British thespians. It has often been suggested that American audiences expect their Romans to speak like the English. So the HBO/BBC mini-series Rome was peopled by British and Irish stars." - BBC
@kevinguy247 from wikipedia: In classical Roman culture, 'cakes' of flat rounds made with flour containing nuts, leavened with yeast, and sweetened with honey were served at special birthdays.
@kevinguy247 Yes indeed. According to wikipedia, the Romans enthusiastically celebrated birthdays with hedonistic parties and generous presents. In revulsion that the early Christians rejected the practice as inherently pagan. Now, I assume a cake is a hedonistic present.
4:21 they depict a complete frenzy, no ranks whatsoever. of course, this is almost completely absurd. especially romans would never have fought like that. maintaining ranks was most important, and plus, romans would have feared leaving the formation and risking their lives.
"4:21 they depict a complete frenzy, no ranks whatsoever. of course, this is almost completely absurd. especially romans would never have fought like that."
True enough, but if the battle had been shown accurately it would have been endlessly boring (to an onlooker at any rate). In most cases the casualties were hacked to death over a few hours rather than dying of a single thrust in an exciting one to one duel.
I just thought..sod being the chap in front! "Stop pushing at the back...stop pushing please..now please!" hehe. what a way to go, why i wasent this age then?!
Not only that....but Cassius died in the first battle....Brutus died in the second...about 3 weeks later on October 23rd.
Also...Brutus and Anthony were good friends. Anthony searched the hills to the north for Brutus' body...and covered it with a purple cloak...(purple!).
The series got that part right though. Brutus really did refuse to join the conspiracy to assasinate Caesar unless the rest of the "Liberatores" agreed to spare Anthonys life.
