I don't understand the concept of how to even program or harness within AI the ability to have ambition. It's really interesting to think about, with all this talk about AI trying to wipe out the human race - what is the motive? What would be the point of programming AI with its own initiative, rather than just maintaining it as merely a tool for the human race? Interesting thoughts, guys. Keep it up.
Ray Jarvis is the head of Robotics dept at Monash Uni. I like the idea of having some sort of Swarm AI technology, perhaps using quadcopters instead of drones to send back all sorts of metadata about the environment, including temperature scans, video, photos, time of flight info (as Vinge suggests) etc.
BTW, Stelarc is an Australian artist with Greek ancestry, and is based in Melbourne.
An arm on your ear would be very hard to maintain, scaffolding problems etc...
Steve Omohundro's Social Safety Net of AIs to police each other, and keep other AIs in line. Steve wrote the seminal paper 'Basic AI Drives'.
Very friendly guy. I have another youtube video of him speaking at Monash Uni. And also plenty of interview footage that will one day make it onto youtube!
Should we be concerned about AI friendliness? Yes. Can we do anything about it? We don't know for sure, however:
A) it is possible for an AGI to have no empathy for us
B) it is possible for us, and ultimately the AGI to program friendly AI.
Just cause were _not sure we can_ influence the nature of AGI, does not mean _we can't_. Hugo says AI friendliness is a dangerous delusion - I disagree. What's the logical alternative to building an AGI where it's friendliness is a delusion?
