Robert Downey Jr. at Sherlock Holmes launch

Too old for it? yeah, right...most of the great Sherlock Holmes players of the past have been over 45 anyway. I like Downey Jr. but I'm not so sure I'll like this movie or its direction

When I actually heard about this movie I thought it was a joke. But finding out it's for real I am completely horrified. Frankly I'll stick with the real Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson(Jeremy Brett and Edward Hardwick).

it's very nice to see a brand new holmes movie with the lovely theatrics and graphics and staging that we have these days, but this just seems like I'm going to walk into the theater and throw up on the person sitting in front of me after about 20 minutes. RDJ is incredibly delicious, but what the hell? seriously? the thing that pisses me off the most is Irene. didn't Holmes hate women? maybe I'm missing something. kay, my rant is over.

Robert isn't similar to Sherlock Holmes at all. I think that they choose him just 'cause he is popular. And Law as Dr. Watson? Ehem... well, we will see, but I'm little disappoint for that moment.

I don't think half these people have seen Bretts Portrayal of Holmes, Probably just as well otherwise their expectations of this film would be extremely high. Pity Jeremy died in 1995. As for the yank? it's a bit like drinking tea from a coffee mug. David Tennant would have been a better choice.

I completely agree...did they actually READ the freaking Holmes books? Excuse me - "love interest" for Sherlock?? What the hell is that? This is just another Hollywood botch-up that's going to ruin a masterpiece. Doyle's work should be respected...not disgraced by big-budgeted Hollywood formulas.

i am excited but kinda nervous. being a huge fan of the books, i am hesitant about the "love interest" part of the story, since Holmes was, in no way whatsoever, attracted to women in a romantic way. I must put my faith in the director to maintain the integrity of the book. but after seeing iron man i am super excited about R.D Jr. playing the part of Holmes.

Accents are always a scary proposition, but I don't think they should dictate which actor/actress of a particular nationality gets which roles.

Well, if you were to go according to the original stories both Holmes and Watson are around 27. But seeing that most of the actors who have previously played Holmes had been well into their 40's and 50's then he would be considered to play a young Holmes.

This is going to be very interesting. Downey Jr. is an actor that has proven he can work hard enough to portray any character. Hopefully he pulls off this Sherlock Holmes idea. If he does plus a good directing this movie is gonna be awesome!!!

God, I hope they don't make Holmes American. I am American, but making Holmes American would be like making Superman French. It would be Kevin Costner's "Robin Hood from Iowa" all over again.

On the other hand, I'm intrigued. Sherlock Holmes was a drug addict (a little heroin and morphine, but mostly cocaine) it would be interesting to see how Downey Jr. plays that out.

Actually, he wasn't an addict. He only used cocaine when he was excessively bored and had no cases to challenge his mental faculties. Only THEN did he turn to injections for artificial mental stimuli, but he was always able to completely drop the cocaine entirely whenever an intriguing case fell into his lap.
