The worst about pantera in the late 90's were that Phil was becoming such a black metal fan that he would sing like one of those. Personally I love when he does the growl between the lyrics because he sounds like a fucking demon when he growls (apart from many other death metal vocalists) But when he does the raspy like vocals from Black Metal that ruins it for me. Don't get me wrong I love pantera and forever will, hell I even have a CFH tattoo but goddamnit, fucking black metal.. Stay strong!!
I was there. Only time I ever got to see Pantera. I expected Phil to be fucked up, but he was having a good night I think. Static-X sounded real good. The only bad spot of the night was Slayer (it kills me to say). They didn't have the right equipment for that big a place. And Phil kinda rubbed it in that they were headlining, not Slayer.
Dont get me wrong BTW, Cowboys from Hell and Vulgar Display of Power are 2 of my favourite albums of all time, but Phil just totally destroyed the band over the years, probably because of his drug abuse. Pantera already died after Far Beyond Driven for me, Dime kept writing awesome stuff tho.
Im glad to see how Phil performs on stage right now, he's doing an awesome job in Down and ATM he would be able to sing every Pantera song again. Wish I could see him live sometime... :]

Phil Anselmo... 1988: One of the best Glam Metal singers I've ever heard, he sings like your 5 y old boy with a rope 'round his balls combined with... my Grandpa. Awesome.
1990... Cowboys From Hell, he is the ultimate voice of heavy metal, he still masters the high pinch glam stuff and also sings awesome James Hetfield style.
1992 Vulgar... His glam stuff got replaced by screams wich barely have any notable tone, from here on his vocal range is getting worse and worse.
So glad i got to see these guys live. Hands down the best fucking concerts i've ever been to. It's a shame we'll never get to see them all together again.
Kick ass vid. You can totally tell how Phil changed over the years leading up to this point. Sounds like he' strugglin' just to get the lyrics out.He sounds half as good as from the CFH album, just my opinion though. Good rare vid though dude.
i personally think phil is the most badass here. i don't mind that he might not hit every note or line, his screaming was at his prime here. also, after watching a bunch of alice in chains stuff recently, and seeing how fucked layne got from his heroin use, i've become more grateful how strong phil was. look at a 96 aic live performance then this, and you'll see that phil is pretty active and has a lot of energy, where layne wouldn't even move on stage
@xlr8ter4 Thats what happens with age and destroying your body with drugs and alcohol, hes still a badass I dont care how old he getts or how shitty he sounds, he recorded some of the best metal vocals EVER, and in my eyes has not been topped still, sorry cory taylor Chad Grey blows you away and still I think Phils vocal were more unleashing than either of the two.
