Halfway between learning about our planet and halfway between destroying it. Watching this again after about 3-4 years....has really put EVERYTHING into place now. Scientific progress is halted for the interests of profit. There needs to be a revolution to shake off these chains and move forward.

The profit motive is the central enemy to technological progress. On one hand it created the basis for it, with the industrial revolution, global integration of economy, etc. On the other hand, the profit-motive is slowing down progress, because if say a cure for cancer isn't more profitable than say a chemical that kills bran cells, guess what gets funded. Under socialism, technology and resources on the planet would be utilized to meet pressing human needs, not to enrich a clique of elites.

I've given this enough thought, being a Political Scientist. Socialism has led to stagnation whenever it was attempted. Marx's ideas have been proved wrong by economics and sociologists. There's no class struggle, majority of people under developed capitalism are members of the middle class: the most productive class. The amount of working class people decreases steadily and they will disappear as a class in the future due to AI and advanced robotics. Communism has no place in the future.

Okay, keep believing that, it has no basis in reality. AI and advanced robotics will never advanced and be made of use as long as the capitalist system exists. Capitalism is entering into a crisis, the working class, the vast majority of the population, are facing conditions not seen since the Great Depression. The only thing that will get us out of this crisis is another world war. Oh yeah, capitalism is triumphant! The end of history!

Lives dont get richer by video in glasses or a virtual conference or a robot servant...they just get easier and more comfortable...true richness is about intensity,not the variety of options...

as the techology expert has said the people who choose not to update themselves will lose out. But what is most terrifying about the potential of these brain chips is the inside information factor. Whoever manages to coin these will not want to openely share the technology and hard work for nothing. They will come at a price at which a lot of people may not afford. That is if they chose to share them at all. A newly informed elite a million times more devastating that the current class system.

For anybody who hasn't seen 'AI' and especially for subject matter purposes, 'Bicentenial man'. Please see this movie. It argues the eternal philosophical question of recognition of AI as self awareness. Of Ai knowing of 'self'. Also, if we had to renew all insides of a robot as organic material, does it have a soul? Whereas if we had to renew our bodies with synthetics, do we also have that same soul. I believe 'souls' are just energy powering our bodies, our shells that happen to be organic.

Whenever God is in the equation the whole problem falls to peaces. If the equation is so beautiful and flowing as it is, why would we shove a random variable in there?.

Not that I want this section to become a religious discussion, but the reason for that as you most probably know already is this. God is real in the fantasy world. Where faith is required because you cant prove something that isnt there or make itself known. But science in this reality is know to us every second through proof and practice. To mix religion with science is like mixing rationality with fantasy. You can't have both.

It doesn't NEED to make sense to the layman because it works.  When a situation comes around that breaks our predictions, the theory will be adjusted.

@speadskater actually if you take time to parse out the personality of the God of the Bible, you might see that he encourages science and doesn't act irrationality, even if you don't understand it. it doesn't have to make sense to you. Also, as I said earlier, J. Hartnett's book gives a better cosmology. A better prediction and better explanation which is what sci theories are. Miracles aside, God uses physics much of the time. If such theory is off, it can be adjusted and more beautiful.

John Hartnett's about about the new physics will give you plenty of equations for an alternative cosmology based on the Bible if you so wish to sink your teeth in instead of spewing nonsense on youtube.

Ray Kurzweil pisses me off because whenever he speaks of the prospective futurism that transhumanists all want to hear about he never states what we can do to prevent the governments of the world from preventing scientists and engineers from seeing their visions through. We MUST remember that the government wants to prevent advances in every area, because the more advanced we are generally, the less dependant on them we are! Ray Kurzweil doesn't seem to consider this.
