  • still love dis game 9yrs later lol

  • Too bad i never had a GC...i want to play this.

  • i didnt know big boss was in eternal darkess

  • @schwste is not big boss

  • PARGON!

  • Good game, but i recommend not to buy it, download is the best option :)

  • I bought this game wwwwaaaaayyyyy back when but it got stolen...... Though i just bought another copy over e-bay since its so hard to find. It comes in, in 3 days! I cant wait!

  • I think I would have shit my pants ..playing this game at 10 yrs. old .

  • It was the best game ever on the gamecube ... and I think the best game ever at that time .. it had it all ... you name it ..it had it ! ... and for the life of me , I can't understand why there has never been a sequel ?!!

  • "Deep into that darkness peering, long I stood there, wondering... fearing... doubting... whether we will ever see a sequel"

Thanks to everyone for keeping me updated on the gaming news! We'll all have to keep our fingers crossed for a Wii U title! Rock on my fellow ED fans!

  • Best game ever.

    Fucking period.

  • FLESH..............BONE.............EPIC

  • This game is the primary reason I hang on to my Gamecube.

  • I rated this as the number one best game that no one played on my blog.

  • "Deep into that darkness peering, long I stood there,

    Wondering... Pearing... Doubting..."

  • Game made me find H.P Lovecraft stories which then lead me onto the Penumbra series and subsequently Amnesia. All brilliant games, stories and great horrors!

But eternal darkness will hold a special place in my mind!

  • @loljonasfail maybe the game was shit to you and to you only . But that doesn't mean that it was shit to anyone else that played it. Because to me the game wasn't shit at all.It was actually a really good game for me,and it's still one of the best games of today that beats alot of newer games .

  • @loljonasfail THE VOICE ACTING IS TERRIBLE, he said. You sir, are made of stupid.

  • this game was great but i did not success due to gamecube's few sales :-(

  • For those of you who don't know about this rumor, here it is: Retro Studios (Metroid Prime trilogy, Donkey Kong Country Returns) may be working on Eternal Darkness 2.

  • Did you notice how in the game they're waiting for the planets to align...

You do realize that on 2012 the planets will perfectly aligned right?

    Kinda weird no?

  • @VegasSGrimReaper No, it's not weird. It's just playing off your fears.

  • @VegasSGrimReaper The planets aligned perfectly ten years or so ago. Nothing happened.

  • This game is the tits. But i was sooo upset when it said i had to turn off my gamecube. I didn't know it was part of the game and cried a little, then it said "Play?" And I went "Oh fuck me I am going to kick this games ass." and didn't sleep until i beat it. XD

  • Why SK?... Why so us the likes of Too Human, instead of blessing us with a sequel?

  • this game may be one of the greatest games ever made. atleast, in my opinion, i have not ever played a game ever since this game that really amazed me. I would love to buy this and the the system all over again just to play it again

  • woo Eternal darkness ^^ This and Killer 7 are part of my top fav. gamecube games =D

  • I swear, after playing this game in fifth grade, I kept drawing runes for spells in class.

  • Also, I love the music in the Options menu.

My birthday is later this week. I could not decide what I wanted as a present. I have now made my decision.

  • 9 people have not come to understand fear.

  • 150 People have proven that the Darkness is not Eternal. Likewise 9 people have become stuck in the horrors that is the Eternal Darkness.

  • "YouTube...will come to understand...fear...as I have."

Truly one of the greatest games ever made. Currently playing through "Blood Omen: Legacy of Kane" for the first time. MAN, Silicon Knights are good, and their games have some of the best voice acting ever.

  • DERP

  • the moment I saw an edgar allan poe quote I fell in love.

  • It's hard to believe it's a nintendo franchise, but it is and I like it

is and what it wants most is a sequel for the Wii.

  • yep, i'm one of the few lucky ones to have played this baby on release! i was 24 and remember discussing about this game with my colleages at work!! still one of my favs.

  • @UPHENOS So am I.

  • Juegazo

  • this game freaked me out when i was 7

  • Thumbs up for happy intro and scary shit afterwards!

  • @raxcax

  • isnt there a part of the game where the volume turns up on your screen er something??

  • Hands down, greatest game on this wack system.

  • Does All Gamecube Games Work On The Wii.? Because I Getting All My Wii Games Before I Get The Wii.

  • @BabyChineseDoll Yeah, you'll need a Gamecube paddle though.

  • we've still got this game and it works on the wii !

How I loved this game. It had everything right. From the creepy surroundings and soundtrack - blood dripping down the walls! o.O To the excellent story that had you gripped, wanting to find out what happened next, to the graphics that (for the time) was v good!

  • Is it just me or does this game have the best and coolest opening sequence of any game out? I mean from the dude saying Nintendo in that echo voice and the Silicon Knights intro and even the Dolby Pro Logic 2 with the deeeeep bass. Just all wow sounding. The Main menu screen music is awesome as well. Why did Nintendo have to bomb on every other game they made for Gamecube it seems like ugh...

  • Best Game ever made hands down!

  • I miss this game so much and I thinking about another game cube just have this game back right now amazon new it going for $84.00 so it has became a rare game and ign give it a 9.6 rating

  • cmon silicon knights!!!sequel ! Best game so underated!

  • I love Silicon Knights. They put such great work in to their game. Almost too much:3 Been a fan of their games since "Legacy of Kain." This game made me a fan of H.P. Lovecraft. Too bad there hasn't been many "horror" games as of late. I want something wont let me sleep, like "Fatal Frame," or this game. "Dead Space," scared me, but once you beat it, it's just a time peice, but there is something about ghosts gods and your sanity that fucks with me:P

  • I´m really love gaming and I own all great konsoles from wii over PS3 to Xbox- but I never again played a game like this. And also I never heard such a massive Soundtrack in a game! Awesome...and still a great game after so many years!

  • best gamecube game ever

if they make a sequel it will be on a nintendo system this game is owned by nintendo

  • May the rats eat your eyes!

Thats what I call a game. The bathtube sequence scared the s*** out off me when i played it for the first time :D Atmospheric games like this one are hard to find in recent time.

  • @raidenpowers scariest scene ever in videogames

  • lol, eternal darkness 2. i guess that wouldnt be a sequel but more of the yellow ancient (the one tht didnt got developed) being the god or time and making the events of ED not happen (say... mantorok actually being powerfull and fighting directly with the other gods while pious is an allie) but still i think unless they come up with something superb, its best to leave it as a single game

  • Oddly enough, I don't want a sequal. I love this game, don't get me wrong, but I think it Is best as a stand alone game.

  • @metroid3802 - Yeah I get that...The sequal would have to be beyond epic, and how exactly would the story progress...The only thing i can think of is something like "the lost chapters" which is cliche to say the least.

I wouldn't say no to complete grahical makeover though - So long as it was on a nintendo system when good graphics became one of thier priorities again. Probably in 4 consoles time when thier popularity sinks again lol!

  • This was my first game I bought to my Gamecube...good old days

  • Everyone who liked this game should check out the game Call of Cthulhu for the original Xbox.

Another hugely underrated horror game that was actually quite good.

  • took forever to beat game with like no sanity

  • i think they are making a sequel

  • I believe that this is one of the most underrated games on one of the most underrated platforms!!

I remember my 10 year old self at christmas opening the gamecube then seeing this game!

I had never heard of it before - and it did not disappoint.

It hooked me immediately and is still my my top 5 games of all time! Everything is spot on - atmosphere, music, originality, characters....

How much do I want a sequel!!

  • ditto. +

  • Its a shame a squeal is unlikely because silicon Knights fell out with Nintendo and have moved to Microsoft however they cant make another game without nintendo as nintendo hold the patent for videogame insanity (the sanity effects)

So unless they get back together no Eternal darkness 2 :,(

  • Nintendo doesn't hold anything; Silicon Knights made the game, and Nintendo published it.

Having said that, Silicon Knights does not need Nintendo in order to make a sequel to Eternal Darkness.

  • Yes they do google US Patent 6935954 try using google first eh?

so they could make another game but nintendo own the sanity meter system

  • I wasn't necessarily referring to the sanity bar system, but rather sanity as a whole.

There are tons of different, better ways that Silicon Knights could effectively implement a sanity system.

Take Call of Cthulhu, for example. When your sanity starts to drain. The screen becomes blurry and distorted, heartbeats become audible, your character starts having fits of schizophrenia, he starts talking to himself and, when your sanity is low enough, he'll commit suicide.

  • True however if you read the details of the patent you realise that call of Cthulhu (If i recall correctly its the one based on shadow over innsmouth right?) Is about as good as it can get as any form of measurable sanity indicator is patented as is regaining sanity form slaying foes and from "mind aids" i.e. spells.

So yeh they could go with a CoC style sanity but i feel it wouldn't be the same i mean the sanity stuff was the most stand out part of the game apart from the awesome plot.

  • Yes, Call of Cthulhu is based off of the story "Shadow over Insmouth".

Actually, I though Call of Cthulhu's sanity system (in terms of gaining and losing sanity) was actually better than Eternal Darkness's. Simply experiencing the effects immediately first-hand, rather than having some silly little green bar on the side of the screen, is more atmospheric.

Also, it is truly a shame that Nintendo holds that patent; they aren't ever going to put it to good use...

  • The sanity system was well-done, but you're right it could have been put to better use. In fact, while this game was an excellent piece, more work on it could have made it more than just an enhanced, refined N64 game.

  • im curious could they say Sell the patent? because i bet if a company wanted it badly enough they could buy it imagine if a company like id or monolith got there hands on that or maybe even betheseda!

  • They could sell the patent if they wanted to. But they are holding onto it seeing that another Eternal Darkness project or something to that effect will be utilized. Monolith, bring a first-party developer to Nintendo now, could easily use the rights.

  • There were talks a while back for Eternal Darkness 2 or such to be coming. However, hard to say now, but the possibility is there.

  • @VindicatedLife oh my god you have no idea how much i agree with every word you just wrote, we have to start writing to silicon knights requesting a sequel. seriously, this is a wonderful game. played it sooooo many times its ridiculous

  • @VindicatedLife only one thing...the gameplay, the camara an the atack mode are like resident evil games

  • @VindicatedLife same for me it was by chance that i found this game. And ive loved it since and am sad that more people dont play it.

  • @VindicatedLife I completely agree, this is the most underrated game ever made.

  • @VindicatedLife

TRUE! It is quite a strange experience playing this at 7 years old and being scared shitless by this game to know see it on amazon and impulseivly buy it lol

  • @VindicatedLife Looks like you may get one. Word is that Retro Studios (Metroid Prime trilogy, Donkey Kong Country Returns) are working on Eternal Darkness 2 for the next Nintendo console.

  • @VindicatedLife there's a strong rumor that retro studios is making the sequel for nintendo's next console "project cafe" :)

  • woof

    holy shizzle

    lol

  • i have never played any other game that draws you into the game as much as eternal darkness. the atmosphere the game creates and the music is incredible. every setting in the game that you're taken to is disturbing yet beautiful at the same time. i wish they'd make a sequel on wii

  • What's the song playing during the Options screen?

  • Wii sequel please.

  • The tell tale heart

  • wats this game rated

  • FANTASTICO. QUERO ETERNAL DARkNESS 2. TRABALHA NINTENDO

  • what is 'attract mode'?

  • Attract mode is the term given to whatever a game does when people aren't using it. It's meant to lure or... attract someone to it (it originated with arcade games, where gameplay demos would be shown to convince you to drop the cash to play it.)

  • huh.

  • It's a fuckin demo that shows up when you switch the console on and touch no button.

  • oh ok. thanks!

  • Uno de los mejores juego que he jugado en mi vida. Me fascina este juego. Love it so much

  • Whats the name of Edgar Allan Poe's poem in the start?

  • Nvm. I found out wich it was.

    "The Raven"

  • haha i was playing this intro like 15 times repeatedly on my wii, had to keep resettinng.

i love it so much.. the "nintendo" and then tthe rest. in my dark livigroom with surround and ofcourse like you said; a good subwoofer (especially during thee DPLII logo, that's deep :p)

  • Seeing the pop up of (forgot her name) dead in the bathtub made me scream like a girl the first time I investigated the bathroom... Fuckin shit...maaaaan...love this game!

  • dude i made me scream! i was like 10 years old when i played that part. i turned of my game cube and ran to my moms room. she asked me whats wrong i was so scared i didnt ansewer her!

  • hahaha I guess that gets everyone, I remember being stoned at the time, PRICELESS

  • they should make a sequel where theirs a mode where you play beginning to end the game with out the sanity spell

  • Scariest game ever lol.

If you're sanity gets to like 10% This game is total horror :o,

On my first try I did'nt knew what sanity was good or bad for,

Till I walked around in the mansion hearing voices and knocking on the door, And the door knocks still are creepy O.o

  • this was my first game!!!

now i want to play it so badly and cant seem to find it anywhere, now that they have the new consoles gamecube games are hard to find now!

  • my parents use to play this game lol im trying to get it back from my aunt whos 14 (she adopted)

  • muy bueno este juego sake toos los finales :)

  • "You to will come to undersatand.. fear as I have" WOOT! love it! ^_^

  • Me too. It's just awesome :D

  • Awesome game. It scared the crap out of me for two years after getting it before I finally decided to give it some serious play time. Probably the only horror related thing ever that I want to see a sequel too D:.

  • i never got the point of the game!!

i just liked killing those zombie guy things!! :D

  • there is different versions of the game maybe you have the suckish first version

  • two under rated games that diserve a sequal eternal darkness and lost kingdoms 2

  • Actually, Dyack confirmed that Silicon Knights wants to do other games in the same universe (thought not a true sequel). Trouble is, Nintendo literally has a patent on the Sanity meter, so it's up to them whether there will ever be one.

  • well ok then sweet

  • I especially love the music from the options menu... so serene and forboding...

  • i agree

  • you're a little slow on the menu, but good video...

  • And pray tell us how you think it could be improved, eh?

  • ur a shity person

  • I love this game so much. I really hope that they make a sequal one day soon. I mean, there are just so many questions that are left unanswered. Does anybody agree with me on this one?

  • I do.

Who or what the hell is Mantorok? Is he good or bad? What does he want? What will he do? Is it true he is actually the one who has total control over the ancients, and if so, why did he allow Pious to get impaled by those huge pillars?

  • RIGHT ON

  • I remember that most of those questions were answered in this game.

Mantorok is a god, just like the other 3.

He isn´t good or bad, he´s just a superior god... I think he has lost his power because the other 3 gods attacked him, let´s say, at the same time...

And he has to feed of flesh and blood...

There´s a hallucination (sorry if i spelt it wrong) when you can see a promo for Eternal Darkness: Sanity´s "something" hahaha i´ve waited a long time to see that game

  • Sanity's Redemption. It was partway through the game. I only ever saw it once, and I've played through many times.

  • Well, you will be happy to know that a sequel is being planned. For Which System(s) I dont know.

  • And they say Nintendo's first mature game when they actually just published it! I didn't know Silicon Knights created it, they created the first Blood Omen: Legacy Of Kain game for the PS1 which was the start of a masterpiece series of course.

  • Nintendo created the Sanity system, the darkest thing in this game.

  • "This.. can't be HAPPENING!"

    Yes indeed.

However, one thing I liked about it was that, however outlandish it got, they made it vastly better and more plausible by going one step beyond the norm, and including historical settings, excellent details, and characters you actually got to know (albeit briefly).

All that effort makes an atmosphere.

And THAT makes the game all the scarier.

  • I love the voice that says "NINTENDO"

  • Just out of a bit of randomness, this game has pissed me off a few times -_-. Getting the blue screen TWICE, falling apart, then reviving only to get killed. Getting boxed in by monsters with no escape. Not being able to kill this god damn boss D<. Other than that, I love this game.

  • Kyo--besides not being able to kill the boss, what you just described were sanity effects! :P The sanity effects in the game not only play with the character (such as falling apart, having too many enemies, etc), but they play with YOU, hence the "blue screen of death" the volume turning down, etc. It's part of the game's genius.

  • I know these are sanity effects. But for some reason, sometimes when I get the sanity effects it makes my person more vunerable, and I get killed. I got the blue screen, then got confused because of the interuption. Then, I fell apart. He revived, and I was unable to move for a moment and I was killed by a Horror. Oh, and I killed the boss, by the way.

  • If you hacked it, then you dont love this game.

  • lol Now the main character in this should have been in super smash bros Brawl. Think about it, her main attacks would involve insanity, and her arena will have all the effects that happen in this game well, except for the exploding heads.

  • wait, whats it stay at the beginning, You too will come to understand..Fear is...?

  • Dr. Roivas is quoted as saying "You, too, will come to understand... fear... as I have."

It was a quote taken from one of the later cutscenes. It's the same character that starts narrating at 3:35

  • That isn't Dr. Roivas, it's Pious Augustus.

  • who here played metal gear solid and phycomantis says "oo, so, you like silicon knights?... did you get a scare from ETERNAL DARKNESS!" hahah, that was cool... ps, this game is was the start os something that never really caught on. c'mon other games, the sanity system is a must for any survival/horror game, and playing as different people in the past knowing they were going to die just makes you interested in the story... which was amazing as well (when you understand it)

  • Yes indeed.

But I wouldn't want it mainstreamed too quickly.

Doing that would merely make it a cheap, throw-away gimmick, and not the work of love Silicon Knights made it.

They understand the hidden secret of horror.

Gore and gruesome monsters are but temporary.

But the darkness, the evil, the morbid and sickening atmosphere...

    That lingers.

    Oh yes, it does.

  • yeah, you're right, if everyone did it, it wouldn't be the same, however, no one seems to be attempting to make it better either.

on a side note, how cool/odd would it be if they made a portal/eternal darkness multiplayer where you try to make others go insane, and portal them to traps you set out... hehehe

  • dude did i got freak out i was like what the fuck

  • I want etenal darknes on wii!

  • The opening and menu are very cool

  • this game has to be one of the best storylines of all time

  • agreed, there's nothing like it

  • omh i hate it when the walls start to bleed and you here screaming lol man that was trippy

  • This game used to scare the crap out of me... not becuase of the scare moment which were barely there... but seriuesly those sanity effects were simply crazy... and the Blue Screen of Death littlerly made me scream of fear... i thought my GameCube crashed!

  • great game! especially for fans of lovecraft.

  • its freaky shit eh? i used to be scared to play during the day!

  • This game...ROCKS, you cant beat how tenseing and freaky it gets at time, it REALLY makes your nerves on end and jump. and what a story line =D

  • I'm thinking about playing this one...

  • No, it's a Game Cube exclusive.

  • =OO!!

  • res evil sucks compared to this game, no horror game can beat this games storyline, this game was based on the work of several greatest novels of all time

  • Especially H.P Lovecraft:D!

  • Este juego es lo mejor!!!

  • im not really a fan of horror games but this one was excellent they should make a sequel ive beaten it twice havent gotten to the 3rd playthrough yet also the only other horror game i like is resident evil 4 another excellent game so if u havent gotten eternal darkness get it youll love it

  • yeah RE4 is sick.

  • i think we should all write letters and get a sequel made asap

  • the most best game ever made!! i wish silicon knights would just forget about making too human and make the sequel for Eternal Darkness already =(

  • I love this game, and I play it all the time. I hear that they are in fact planning on doing a sequel, but haven't got to it because they need to finish a game that they started already. When the sequel comes out I won't be stupid and wait to buy it like I did with this one. This games is sooooo good, even if you don't like horror games (i.e. me), you'll like it.

  • Awsome this was a good game

    really freaky.

  • I just realized something, that room that Alex is fighting in is the servants quarters in the mansion. The place where Maximilian killed all his servants.

  • This was the only reason I got a gamecube, well this and resident evil

  • best game ;0

  • Man i love the game they should make a part 2 or somthing. the first time i played it i've played it like 5 hours or so until it was midnight and thant the game is scary. (if you've got the game you should try it)

  • Is this game worth getting, does it last? Cause I heard it's got twelve different endings. And it's only £7.99 in Gamestation.

  • For $16 yeah, it's worth it. Get it.
