  • Love your videos! I'm going to try this now! (WINTER!) Do they have any pollen problems?

  • @nork3 Just tap the flowers when they're open. They are generally self-pollinating and a tap each day is more than enough for them to pollinate themselves.

  • can you do it with cherry tomatoes?

  • @Irishgirl41 Yep! This plant is a cherry tomato plant. :)

  • Hi! If tomato is a vine, and it can be an eternal tomato, can all vines become eternal vines, like squash and watermelon?

  • @ArtistTalk Yes as long as you keep rooting the vine to keep it growing. As it grows it needs to send down more roots to feed the growing vine.

  • Thanks for getting back so quickly. I had started 2 tomatoe plants about 3 weeks ago in 2.5 inch pots and they seem to be growing very slowly. I have them as close to the lights as I can get them like you suggest but they are only 3 inches high? I planted in soiless mix as well, not sure if that has anything to do with it? My cucumbers shot all kinds of roots and are growing great but not my tomatoes?? Suggestions??

  • @GardenGuy1967 Tomatoes are nitrogen hogs. They will sap every bit of goodness from the soil and you won't even notice it until they start to slow down, get smaller leaves and eventually stop growing. It's like a car running out of gas. Whatever you use as plant food (compost tea, artificial fertilizer, etc) be sure to give it a slow feeding each watering to keep it going. Also, keep your tomatoes on a water/dry cycle. They grow better if allowed to dry out a bit between waterings.

  • Ray, I do not have access to southern facing sunlight in my home. I do have flourescent grow lights I use for seedling starting every year, do you think that this type of light would sustain and grow tomatoe and pepper plants indoors for the winter??

  • @GardenGuy1967 Absolutely! I suggest keeping the lights as close to the top of the plant as possible. I keep my plants around 3 inches under the lights. This will give it the brightest light and help keep it from getting leggy.

  • hehehe *eyes squint, big smile, deep voice* wow... :-D I've had tomatoes that were that awesome before :-D I think when I clean up my mess outside from my dead container garden, I will bring in a couple of the buckets from outside and try growing tomato plants inside this time :-)

  • Ray try to always cut about 1/4 in above a node that way a new sucker will come out for the new top to your plant.

  • This is one of the best clips on growing tomatoes I've seen on YouTube. I live in a condo in the South, but my unit if facing East, so I only get about 5 hours of morning Sun. I planted tomatoes on my balcony last year, but they did not do well. Cherry tomatoes did OK, so I skipped others and planted the cherry kind this year. I'm thinking about growing tomatoes indoor with some artificial light.

  • what do you use to fertilze ?

  • @skyaglow I plant them in a mixture of homemade compost and peat moss with a sprinkling of perlite to keep it loose. I don't fertilize my indoor plants with anything. In the summer I give them a drink of compost tea. That kicks them into high gear for the season. Another shot of compost tea in late summer gets them through the winter. :)

  • hahahahhaha

  • great job..i'm doing goethermal tomatoes..dont laugh..:)..i'll post a movie soon..as far as your indoor ones..look up helio stat.(kinda fancy name for a big mirror).point one towards your winter window to add more light which is lost due to lost solar insolation due to angle of winter sun(-50%) and voila..summer plant indoors.(aka less scraggly)peace.

  • That's fantastic!

In warmer regions of the country, like Zone 24 along the West Coast, it appears you could do this same technique outdoors, provided the plant is kept warm enough with a heating cap, or something to keep it warm during the day and night.

  • I had watched this video a couple months ago looking for tips on growing tomatoes. Around that same time, I had a Passion Flower plant that I bought off eBay that didn't end up doing to well and eventually died. So I followed your tips about cutting back the plant and hoped for new growth. Well I'll be damned, I checked it today and there's a new plant starting to grow in the pot. I'm new to gardening and taking care of plants. So thank you so much for sharing your knowledge with this video!

  • This kind of comment always makes my day. Glad you found something you could use in the video to save your plant. :)

  • You sure like tomatoes. LOL Great video. I might try bringing my upside-down tomatoes indoors at the end of the season. Thanks for the good info.

  • I can't wait to try this! Thanks so much!

  • As always, a great video! You make me laugh too!

  • heheh your so cute..

  • My first cherry tomatoes taste like strawberries. I was very surprised.

  • mine a had a sharp tast, and very nice thay was too mmmmm

  • Thanks for the video, you have inspired me to grow tomatoes indoors at The Warren and to incorporate small tomato plants in the flower gardens outside with peppers. Look my own vids soon. Also, I have a question. There are determinate and indeterminate breeds can you still cut back determinate breeds or do they fizzzle out?

  • That's a really good question Duney! :)

Any tomato plant can be pruned this way. Determinate plants set all their fruit and then stop. That's actually easier to deal with than indeterminate plants, which set out suckers constantly and are a pain to deal with as indoor plants. Determinate vines will restart after being pruned back.

btw, since when did you give up your crown as carnivore supreme? lol

  • Thanks for the answer so quickly. I am still carnivore supreme, I am just very interested in growing more of my own food. Last year we started a Farmers Market at The Warren in the parking lot and now would like to take it a step further and make the gardens at The Warren produce food as well. I just got my Thai Pepper seeds in the mail, oh and I have tomatoe sprouts and basil sprouts from the seeds I planted last week.

  • Two feet of snow on the ground and youre eating a fresh tomatoes. Should be ashamed of yourself. LOL Great video...... Donald

  • thanks so much for including me in your video, My husband is calling you the tomato man. I guess that make me the crazy tomatoe lady. "HUGS" thanks. (grinning from ear to ear) Keep thoughs tomatoes comming. there awesome. :)

  • I'll be fully stocked on veggies and eggs, that's for certain. lol

  • Ray, I appreciate your help!

  • Do you want a roommate or a maid? LOL
