#2-Armed Security almost mow down MIT Student (my update)

I think that some things that people have to realize is that everyone is in a heightened state of security right now. Granted she may have not done anything wrong but if you think about it as well passengers also feel threat and will notify the police. Why even come into the airport to pic someone up with that on you. IEDs do not have to look like what the average person would think. Everything is not about authority, more saftey. If you think about it worse has happened in this country

U can live at this hi level of threat every day if you like, I choose not to. If a terrorist really wanted to get into an airport do you really think they would wear flashing electronics on their chest? She wore it since it was her project and likely wasnt aware of how paranoid we are supposed to be now each and every day.

& I.E.D.'s are bigger than flat breadboard w/ 5 pimple shaped LED's on them & they are not worn as a fashion statement.

All those IED, LED confused viewers,...

"LED's are size of pimples & less dangerous than AA bat. I.E.D.'s have timer, receiver, & BIG WAD of EXPLOSIVE, dont flash announcing them, are concealed from view & a have a detonator. They are not worn on a hoodie, check Wikipedia. Most all that took issue with my video were between 20 and 25 years old.

Recent tests found that 60% of fake bombs got thru TSA security ie Xray scanning. Company in FL near release of system that doesnt need human intervention to detect and distinguish between two or more explosives, of a differnet type, in quantities the size of a match box. I still think though threat to USA is overblown and McCain's "they will follow us here if we leave Iraq" is idiocy. This is not the kind of war U win.

I have a degree In synthetic Organic Chemistry approved by the American Chemical Society. WHile I worked my ass off and no time for fun, UF was being called the Party school by Bob Hope (who apologized) but for slack majors, he is right.

"Wearing all that"?, U have seen the small 2"x6" board,right?& I assure you she wouldnt be in Engineering if she hadnt mastered Logic. My son almost never gets to see the news & I fill him in. I always keep my word.Have the flu so may take weeks. It will have to be thorough, I am a natural born teacher/have all the props.I checked you out & U are two years older than my son. If U took a tough major (not business school) I would think you would understand Star's position better/at least be more sympathetic.She probably had to drop this year unless she is more a genius than I thought.She could be behind the next cool invention all will love that starts out on a "BreadBoard". Glad you enjoyed it. Few supporters, only those scared of technology not made pretty by Sony. The woman is very bright. Do some searches and learn. She's an inventor, studies robotics, engineering, biomechanics. If our "trained(NOT)" security guards new age 14 electricity, they would know she wasnt dangerous. If killed the public would learn Electronics 101 & felt terrible they were so ignorant. My son, her age, maxed out with courses like her, no time to do anything but study.

I understand what you are saying winsleuth, although I disagree with some of what you are saying I do understand it. Remember, somebody can be very bright intellectually, even a genius, but their actions may not be the brightest. Intelligence can be measured in multiple ways. My feelings on this is that what she did was not very bright at all, but she should not be punished or thrown in jail, a harsh warning not to do it again.

I have a son, brilliant, the same age. The kid wont even curse. Earned 27 college credits while still in high school. His common sense though, now 21, is just now approaching what I would call normal. Fortunately his major is high math but were he good with his hands like me, I could see him goof like this. Classes stress him out so much, he can barely remember calling his dad. All over news last few yrs, judgement is not quite developed in him/Star.

Also, I hear what you are saying about the security not being knowledgeable about their own job, but at the same time, think about it this way... anything suspicious these days, and I mean anything, even if it looks harmless, I mean if there is any suspicion at all, like "hey why is this girl walking around with all this stuff strapped to her and playdough?" Since there is no logical explanation why somebody would do this, it was their job to investigate the matter and follow procedure.

she had a golf ball of playdough she wasnt even displaying in her palm, not attached to the ~ 100 milliamp lighting her LED's. Besides you are dead wrong, the logical explanation was in college, inventors are asked to invent stuff and artists are asked to make art, she combined 2 in at best HALLOWEEN shirt. U dont want them 2 learn what this is, just lock and load. U made some points but lost me on this one.

It makes sense to do a project or art in the form of that hoodie or shirt or whatever it was on. Art is a form of expression, and used to make a statement and convey feelings or ideas. Being into art my whole life and having a Visual & Digital arts degree I do understand what the girl was wearing makes sense, I just don't think she should have worn it into the airport when she was going to pick up a friend.

Now that she knows the public is more scared of her than the true terrorist who is in the 50% not scanned, or who can put a real bomb inside a cell phone, I dont think she would have done/nor will ever do this again. I dont like losing the innocence of her to this world but if it keeps her alive, so be it.

I understand both sides to this issue. Perhaps I'm not being sympathetic, if she got injured I would be more inclined to be sympathetic. You are correct that I don't know the whole story, what ever happened to her afterwards? And it doesn't matter if you say you're in an art competition or have a card saying you are, they still would have to investigate. Maybe it's sad that we can't take peoples word these days when it comes to issues like this, but that is how it is.

If these security people are earning over $12 an hour, they should all be fired. The 14 year olds in my electronics class would be OFLOL seeing submachine guns pointed at her LED shaped star & 9V battery hanging of board. No button,explosives,suicide belt,blasting cap,& in the wrong place to explode a bomb. Akin to cops putting 21 bullets in the black new yorker for flinching, he was innocent. Fire the whole lot, I could train these guys better. Been a electronic hobbyist since 12 years old.

I went to college for graphic design and that's what I'm currently doing full time. My knowledge of electronics and bombs and all of that is probably below average.  If you do a video about this circuit, i look forward to seeing it.

I had a major Martial Arts DVD to finish, now done so I will get to my electronics video. I want to use the exact same parts and that breadboard costs $20 and I dont need it. Once I have that it will just take minutes to make a similar circuit. I will let you know.

So uninformed & under educated, makes me sad. Don't be afraid of the dark, that is your lack of education scaring you. Learn some electronics, study pics & film again, you will feel much better. Don't open the door on Halloween, more "functioning" electronics in today's costumes, under cover of dark clothes & night time, just your fear will take you out. Comments come and go. Many are convinced this device was an actual bomb. 1 stated incorrectly there were all needed for a bomb, no facts or refs, & 1 person even stated that playdough is an explosive. My friends, go find yourself a student at your local junior college and show them the picture of Star Simpson. Ask them what they think the danger is here. I repeat a famous quote by Franklin D. Roosevelt: "The only thing to fear is fear itself."

I will be right there with you "making a stink". There is no need for such ridiculous paranoia. I agree that if we are ever to use the phrase "the terrorists have won" as so many political agitators love to do, it's when we are so scared that we come within seconds of shooting a bright, eccentric, 19 year old MIT sophomore. Yes, I "resent" this MIT student was almost machined down because security wasnt taught 9th grade electronics. It's a free country, be afraid of her board & tape. Wise Guy? See the picture of her so called bomb. Any mistake was thinking security guards were so poorly trained they would really think it could cause harm. Just a still shot shows it not functional, she used scotch tape! I doubt she thought this a stunt, only what she says. CNN seems to be backing off since they got video, it is comical. There was no explosive, no button, no wires. I disagree if you say this war is anything but a horrific mistake. Bush is trying to asure Bible prophesy comes to be.
