Very cool! Actually, there should be no need to program pitchbend range into the patch at all if the synth lprocesses RPN 0,0 sent by guitar/midi controller (GR30 sends this when you change patch) to set pb range. If NI handled RPN 0,0 I might go for it. Best!
Amazing stuff! Thanks for posting. Does NI software synth respect the pitch bend range msg from your guitar MIDI controller (i.e. when it sends a MIDI RPN 0,0 to set the number of semitones for pb). A lot of software synths ignore the rpns and then hammers and bends sound awful because they are not set to same range. Some are even hard-wired to +/- 2 semitones
I had set each one of the six monophonic instances of FM8 ( one for each of the six single string pickups on the hex pickup) to accept pitchbend data (+ 2 semitones). Some patches (not the ones I programed) might default to an octave pb which would start sounding awful for guitar playing. Other patches may have no pb programed at all. Thanks for taking a listen!
I use a built-in Roland GK-KIT pickup (that uses a 13 pin connection) to go into a Roland GR-30 to convert guitar into midi and a Midiman Midisport 2x2 USB to get midi into the computer.

You use the guitar than a midi controller key???? Can I do the same with micro?? With the voice or saxophone, play and the program includes the sounds?
Ich benutze einen dicken 13-polige Kabel an den Rand der Gitarre. Er trug das Audiosignal sowie den Betrieb des Synthesizers. Man kann sie schauen: 45. Die Elektronik habe ich in der Gitarre.
@Baaaammmmmmm you are correct nothing is connected to the 1/4 inch mono output. I think the black cable coming from the top rear end of the guitar must be connected to a midi port there.
I routed in the female 13 pin jack connection on the edge of the guitar. It supplies power to the onboard electronics, provides for patch switching, hex pickup outs as well as (rewired) standard guitar out (the guitar out still works as well by itself) Search for 'Roland GK-KIT'.
@WeakEndProductions ah cool, I'm a bit ignorant about midi guitars. I had assumed that you needed some kind of buttons or electronics in the fretboard to get midi out from a guitar, but the Roland GK-3 appears to just be a special pickup for sending midi out.
loved it until 3:14 why do guys who demo midi guitars waste time with "guitar" sound?. Then again, this isn't a demo, it's your personal jam which was very nice. I'm going with a You Rock Guitar.
Jeez, I thought that really got going from 3:14 on! That patch was particularly responsive to velocity (pick attack). FM8 can be a very responsive synth as opposed to a sample playback engine. That's why I put up the vid.
nice. i've been trying to find a good guitar synth set up and am leaning towards a simple midi converter for the gk pickup...ones i have tried in the past have had lots of latency but it seems like what you've got is working very well.
For me, the latency issue had more to do with what soft synth I was using. FM8 was working pretty good. I did have some minor issues with trying to send six program changes to FM8 with the way you have to set up program change on the the softsynth. Thanks for checking it out.
@k00k0 The GKs are a little funky if you don't get them applied to the guitar right. He's playing a roland-ready so it's set up perfectly for low-latency. Read the instructions on the GK pickup carefully. It's like 20mm from the bridge and 1mm string clearance IIRC.
Great job man... I am a tone purist myself, but midi guitars (eventhou they've been around for a while now) are quite innovative. As a guitar player I have a tube rig with racks an boutique analog pedals plus top notch components we purist brag about all the time.. hate to say.. THIS IS THE FUTURE... GREAT JOB!!!
There's no substitute for an electric guitar. From super clean to heavy distortion, the RANGE of expression that can be accessed from a electric guitar is incredible. Though played, generally the same way, as an acoustic guitar, I would argue that it is a completely different instrument as is piano to organ (though they both have keys). Guitar synth is different as well but it's just another arrow in the quiver for guitarists. It's another means of getting to the sounds that we hear 'inside'.
Names of patches that might have some meaning to you might be 'Lonely Distant Horn', 'Drahtsail', and 'Boost'. All were modified to some extent, made 'mono' voiced patches rather than poloyphonic, at the very least. does that help?
Cool stuff man. I always wanted a guitar synth.midi controller since I'm better at guitar than keyboard, and I like the style of playing on guitar over keyboard.
I play both keyboards and guitar and I kinda feel that for some things (particularly in my case, flute and solo violin type sounds as well as synth lead sounds) I feel more at home playing them on guitar (synth controller) than on a keyboard. It just feels more 'natural' to me. I think it has a lot to how the sound patch responds to velocity but it could be more how your brain and fingers approach a particular sound. Thanks for taking a look at the vid!
Wow..-Are you running through a roland gr20 guitar synth to activate native instruments on a mac..? -Using a roland ready fender guitar..? -Im mad keen to do this..-Check out my work- Youll understand my eagerness.!
Ade, I custom installed a Roland (internal) GK-Kit into my strat. You got to take a router to your axe. I run parallel into a Roland VG-88 (for guitar sounds) and a Roland GR-30 (for synth and midi out). I built my own custom PC and run Cakewalk Sonar and Ableton Live.
I think I said it before but I think your video is just the greatest! Super good producing job. I did an 'all me' music vid a while back but it can't touch yours! More!
I'm unfamiliar with Daft Punk but i checked them out. Yeah, you're right about that patch. I hear what you're saying. Thanks for pointing me to them.
So according to some other comments here, I'm sort of a cross between Kenny G and Daft Punk !?! How can that be? WTF?
Stratocaster with custom installed Roland GK-KIT pickup system. The signal is split with a Roland GKP-4 parallel box. One output to Roland VG-88 guitar/amp modeler. Another output goes to a Roland GR-30 guitar synth (that generates the midi data). The GR-30 midi data goes either into the computer (Midiman Midisport) or to a Roland JV-1010 (half rack synth) via a custom made midi switch. On the computer the midi goes to either Ableton Live 6 or Cakewalk Producer 8.
Oh no! Don't tell me Kenny G is the John Mayer of Saxophone. I guess I don't know enough about the Saxophone I honestly thought he was one of the greats
Thanks for checking out my video. I searched a long time for a new guitar. That one just spoke to me. Fenders have a great sound. "It's not a choice, it's a (Voodoo) Chile!"
They were just drum loops that I layered. I don't remember where I got them. I usually, at least, augment the audio loops with some midi drums. Or I roll my own drum tracks (midi) from scratch. That way you can match intensity to the flow of the tune. Percussion is punctuation for what you are trying to 'say'. I was lazy here; just loops.
Did you clean up things after recording? Because I dont't hear any glitches and my GR-20 produces lots of glitches even when I play super clean and slow.
To be honest, i did clean up a few 'clams' in the recording. You do have to try to play a cleanly as possible to get the best recording. You should be getting good results out of you GR-20, playing it's internal sounds (provided it and your pickup and your patches are set up right). The problem occurs when you are trying to drive external (hardware and software) synths that are not set up correctly.
Ouch!. You couldn't say John Coltrane, Branford Marsalis , maybe Wayne Shorter? Kenny G plays that abomination called "Smooth Jazz". Elevator music. I thought I was getting rather 'busy' starting at about 3:15. Well at least we both agree on one thing: Kenny G ruined the soprano sax.
You're so right, i don't get it when people call kenny G and music in one phrase, nice playing by the way! I also do love the NI FM8, it's a very nice program to work with
t seems to me that if the point of guitar controlled synth is to outside of the normal sounds. Too many demos just show guys flipping through preset patches. You have really achieved uniqueness. Nice studio too BTW..
Hey thanks for the sendup. Someone subsequent to you posted that I sounded like Kenny G. Ouch. I'll settle happily for somewhere between Kenny G and 'genius'! I think the whole idea for midi guitar is new ways to be expressive on a familiar instrument. The new sounds that you have access to should press you into playing differently than before. That's at least what i was trying to do. Thanks again!
Hi, your video has inspired me to get into the who midi-guitar world and I purchased Ableton Live 8, a VG99 as a modeler/converter, FC-300 and a FCB-1010 for foot controller of the Ableton scenes. It seems that you are changing scenes in Ableton with your Sw1 Sw2. Do you have any info concerning your setup and how things must be set in order to get pitch bend and guitar like reponse from the 6 instances of FM8. Any help would be much appreciated.
Adrian, I was going to answer back with a private message to your Youtube 'channel'. (My response got way too wordy for this format.) You have those kind messages blocked. I guess I need a 'friend request' acceptance for the message to go through. I'm sending one.
Can you share the patches you used? I have FM8... Great playing, seems like we've been drinking from the same well. I'm also a play by ear player who started off around '78 trying to learn George's Breezin' album,,, a steep climb, but after 30 years I can get around the fretboard pretty good and have soaked up the best smooth jazz I can for all those years. Also an Ableton and Sonar user.
With a midi guitar you can trigger any sounds that you want, guitar samples included. Your midi guitar can transmit midi 'note on' and 'note off', velocity value and pitchbend data (with string bends and whammy bar). String scrapes, and plucked harmonics generally won't translate into anything other than the above perimeters. If you assigned a string scrape 'sample' to a particular midi note number and/or velocity level you can trigger it. Other modulation data requires a midi foot pedal.
Is it at all possible to use the pickup without having to buy the roland synths? Are there any cheaper synths or compatible pc programs out there that would work with the pickup?
That pickup uses a special 13 pin connection and cable that only works Roland and Axon equipment as far as I know. There is a company (Sonus) that makes a product called a 'G2M' that uses a regular guitar and cable to convert a mono only (no chords) signal into midi data. I haven't tried it but check it out on youtube.
amazing video. I gotta look into getting a midi pickup into one of my guitars because of this vid. also, love the Ibanez roadstar hanging on the wall.
Thanks for noticing the Ibanez Roadstar. You've got an educated eye. I've had that guitar for probably 20+ years. I've literally worn it out. At one point I gutted out all the electronics and a made a clear plastic pickguard to attest to that fact. I used it with a Roland GK midi pickup driving a Roland modeling system (VG-88). I turned it into my ANTI-electric guitar. No traditional pickups, no amp, no cabinet. And it sounds great! Thanks for checking out the video.
Is there a guide somewhere I can read in order to understand how to link a guitar to FM8 (or any other VST). I've been looking for something like this for a while...thanks!
Unfortunately, like you, I haven't found a real definitive source of 'all things midi guitar'. There is info that floating around out there in bits and pieces. Just use the usual common search terms. I still have troubles myself. Trying to get software synths to work with midi guitar, to get all six channels to switch patches on command and not use up all my computer resources is a hit or miss proposition. I'm still learning and experimenting. Thanks for checking out the video.
Yes I'm improvising. I picked order of guitar synth patches in advance. What I played was based on the way the patch 'felt'; how strong the 'attack' portion of the envelope as well as what was happening with the jam loop (drums on/off). Scales? Pentatonic blues scale, I guess. I'm afraid I have to admit that I can't really read a note and basically know nothing about scales, modes, theory and whatnot. If it sounds good, I figure that you are doing the right thing. Thanks for checking it out.
@WeakEndProductions I think being able to read notes is not necessary to be a good musician, but it can be very helpful. I also don't know much about theory stuff but I watched something about minor pentatonic scales and the pattern looked just like the one, you were using. How long you been playing guitar? I think it's quite a good impro.
Sounds good + I like your playing. I have a couple GK-strapped guitars into a GI-20 with an Ableton Live setup that I use for work. I love the GK for padding - there's no better way with a guitar. However, IMO for single note lines, old-fashioned modular synths [controlled by guitar audio with no special pickup] capture the touch much better. E.g. I use a sound very similar to your first sound for the song "Whenever You're Around" by Jill Scott, and I get it with Fretted Instruments "Tripp Lead"
I see what you are talking about. I downloaded Tripp Lead and gave it a try (as an audio effect) and got some pretty good results. People have asked me how to get synth sounds without the GK pickup and that looks like a pretty good way to try that sort of thing out. There's a device, a Sonnus G2M, that will convert mono guitar lines to midi for about $100, I think. The Tripp Lead bypasses the whole mid thing though. Thanks for the tip and for checking out my video!
Good looking guitar, Blizzard Pearl with a maple neck is one of my favorite combinations. How did you get a white internal GK pickup? I bought one from Roland but it's black. Did you get it off a Roland-ready Strat? Thanks.
Yeah I thought the Strat looked good. It's a 60th anniversary (Mexican) Strat. The Neck has kind of an 'aged' finish; more honey toned. I installed an internal GK-KIT pickup and electronics. I painted the pickup. Just found some spray paint that was close to the pickguard color. I would have got the white pickup coverplate if it was available. Thanks for taking a look at the video!
I see what you mean. It's FM synthesis, but I have always liked the sound of a soprano sax (John Coltrane, Branford Marsalis; not Kenny G) so I must have gravitated to that kind of sound subconsciously. Thanks for taking a look at the video.
I started with some patches that seemed to work well with midi guitar.I used tweaks of the following patches: Lonely Distant Horn, Drahtsail gtr, Midnight buzz, and Boost.
This is really awesome and honestly, I am very inspired and excited to step up my guitar game and entry the synth guitar world! I also use ableton live with a number of software synths including FM8 and NI's Massive and Absynth. Do i only need to purchase a midi guitar pickup and plug into my computer? Keep rockin dude!!
Thanks for checking out the video!. Yes, you do need a special pickup to get into midi guitar. You will also need a device that will translate what the pickup senses and turn it into midi data. Unfortunately, a midi port on a computer won't do that on it's own.
I use a Roland GK-KIT internal pickup driving a Roland GR-30 guitar synth to generate the midi data. Checked out your channel. Looks like your are doing some creative stuff. Like the greenscreening.
Thanks man! One more question, I cant tell from the vid, but do you string your guitar up normal or use the 'all high-e strings' trick for tracking? I have basically the same setup (but a vg99 rather than gr30) but I'm having trouble getting fast tracking on my lower notes. You seem to be playing pretty fluidly here, did it take much practice or does it feel natural right away?
if you like ozric, should check out Shpongle, and Spoonbill! you wont be sorry,...This is awesome ! im thinking of making the switch from my godin / gr 33 to what you have here .. Seamless !!!
Thanks. I'll check them out. Hey I thought Godins were pretty good. I know they use saddle pickups for midi. I'd like to compare and contrast. Thanks for checking out the video.
I had not heard of them. I checked out some of their tunes on Youtube and now I see what you are talking about. I'll definitely take that as a compliment. They sound pretty good to me!. Surprised that I haven't run across them before. Thanks for turning me on to them.

If i buy a Roland Midi Pickup such as the GK-3, Can I plug my guitar via Midi/USB cable to my PC and then use as input for my Native FM8 or any other VST program? Simple as that?
Not that simple. The Roland pickup is basically six humbucker pickups, one for each string. The pickup itself, doesn't know what to do with those signals. You need a device to interpret those signals into midi. A Guitar synth unit like a Roland GR-20 or an Guitar/midi interface like the Roland GI-20, for instance. Roland (or someone) would be smart to make a GK to USB Analog /Digital interface. Then generate the midi in software on your computer. Hmmm....
I'm new to MIDI, and am a bit perplexed by your solution. Has running multiple instances of Native Instruments removed the requirement that you play to the nearest semitone?
It allows you to play a guitar in a more 'guitar-like' fashion. It's fairly difficult to play a midi guitar straight into a synth on a single midi channel. You can do it if you play very, very cleanly. It's 'doable' but not practical.
Technically speaking, there are 4 Midi Modes. 1) Omni On/Poly, 2) Omni On/Mono, 3) Omni Off/Poly, 4) Omni Off/Mono. Gtr synths use #4. Each string sends (and the guitar synth receives) on the 6 pre-assigned channels. Each channel can generate only 1 note.
Why do you need six separate instances of your software synth? I'm new to doing music with a PC, and am curious why you can't configure the guitar as a polyphonic instrument.
When you play a poly synth keyboard and hit the pitchbend lever the pitch of all notes that you are holding down will shift in pitch. Unfortunately, that's the same thing will happen on a midi guitar. Any accidental or intentional bend of any string will raise all the strings notes. So you can't play guitar like you normally would do. Like where you bend one string up to the pitch of another.
There's two buttons on the bottom bout of my Stratocaster. They're assigned to midi 'Program Change'. You can see me use them at about 2:04 for instance.
I installed a special pickup and electronics to play synths from my guitar. Roland and Godin make midi access guitars, for instance.
Yes, you can play chords as well as single notes. But you're wise to play the synth or sampled instrument similar to the real version so that it sounds credible. Strummed piano or flute, say, sounds really stupid.
I cant see the pickup on the strat. What kind of a pickup is it? On the bottom edge od the strat I could see you had two switches, presumably used to change patches/presets/p'ograms. Well done video! Well done pickup fit, well played and well introduced. R E S P E C T !
Nice job! I am a guitarist and own Ableton and really dig the idea of MIDI triggering Ableton instruments - what system did you install in your Strat (and is yours the Blizzard Pearl like mine?)
My Strat is a 60th Anniversary (Mexican), and yes, Blizzard Pearl. I like the color and the 'aged' maple neck. I custom installed a Roland GK-KIT (internal) pickup and electronics setup. (You have to be willing to take a router to your Strat with that setup.) I drive a Roland GR-30 which generates the midi data.
Very cool! Actually, there should be no need to program pitchbend range into the patch at all if the synth lprocesses RPN 0,0 sent by guitar/midi controller (GR30 sends this when you change patch) to set pb range. If NI handled RPN 0,0 I might go for it. Best!

just buy the GK-2 and GK-2a (the corresponding pickup and box) which that is still available and get a midi to usb converter(like 10bucks)
hook it up to your vst host and it will give the same input as a synth.
Don't fall for the SONUS G2M.
worst waste of 100 dollars in my life. I expected the single note input but not the extremely noticeable latency!

I use a Roland GR-30 to convert to midi. For monophonic midi conversion look into a Sonnus G2M.

Baaaammmmmmm 1 year ago
Ich benutze einen dicken 13-polige Kabel an den Rand der Gitarre. Er trug das Audiosignal sowie den Betrieb des Synthesizers. Man kann sie schauen: 45. Die Elektronik habe ich in der Gitarre.
WeakEndProductions 1 year ago
@Baaaammmmmmm you are correct nothing is connected to the 1/4 inch mono output. I think the black cable coming from the top rear end of the guitar must be connected to a midi port there.
kaplanfx 1 year ago
I routed in the female 13 pin jack connection on the edge of the guitar. It supplies power to the onboard electronics, provides for patch switching, hex pickup outs as well as (rewired) standard guitar out (the guitar out still works as well by itself) Search for 'Roland GK-KIT'.
WeakEndProductions 1 year ago
@WeakEndProductions ah cool, I'm a bit ignorant about midi guitars. I had assumed that you needed some kind of buttons or electronics in the fretboard to get midi out from a guitar, but the Roland GK-3 appears to just be a special pickup for sending midi out.

loved it until 3:14 why do guys who demo midi guitars waste time with "guitar" sound?. Then again, this isn't a demo, it's your personal jam which was very nice. I'm going with a You Rock Guitar.
paulpaid 1 year ago
Jeez, I thought that really got going from 3:14 on! That patch was particularly responsive to velocity (pick attack). FM8 can be a very responsive synth as opposed to a sample playback engine. That's why I put up the vid.
WeakEndProductions 1 year ago
is that a roland ready stra?t or did you just add the pickup and pickguard?

It's a Roland GK-Kit. It's an internal pickup system. I had to use a router on my (mexican) strat to get the system in there.

nice. i've been trying to find a good guitar synth set up and am leaning towards a simple midi converter for the gk pickup...ones i have tried in the past have had lots of latency but it seems like what you've got is working very well.
k00k0 1 year ago
For me, the latency issue had more to do with what soft synth I was using. FM8 was working pretty good. I did have some minor issues with trying to send six program changes to FM8 with the way you have to set up program change on the the softsynth. Thanks for checking it out.
WeakEndProductions 1 year ago

MrNebelful 1 year ago
There's no substitute for an electric guitar. From super clean to heavy distortion, the RANGE of expression that can be accessed from a electric guitar is incredible. Though played, generally the same way, as an acoustic guitar, I would argue that it is a completely different instrument as is piano to organ (though they both have keys). Guitar synth is different as well but it's just another arrow in the quiver for guitarists. It's another means of getting to the sounds that we hear 'inside'.
WeakEndProductions 1 year ago
Very nice job !
May I ask what specific patch you're using on the FM8 ?
If it's a modified patch, can you tell us how you modified it ?
micknemo6156 1 year ago
Names of patches that might have some meaning to you might be 'Lonely Distant Horn', 'Drahtsail', and 'Boost'. All were modified to some extent, made 'mono' voiced patches rather than poloyphonic, at the very least. does that help?
WeakEndProductions 1 year ago
what kind of midi device are you using for the guitar...thats a normal strat right?
TheKojent1 1 year ago
Cool stuff man. I always wanted a guitar synth.midi controller since I'm better at guitar than keyboard, and I like the style of playing on guitar over keyboard.
ShimmySystem 1 year ago
I play both keyboards and guitar and I kinda feel that for some things (particularly in my case, flute and solo violin type sounds as well as synth lead sounds) I feel more at home playing them on guitar (synth controller) than on a keyboard. It just feels more 'natural' to me. I think it has a lot to how the sound patch responds to velocity but it could be more how your brain and fingers approach a particular sound. Thanks for taking a look at the vid!

Do you think it is possible to get the same result with an AXON midi controller, midi pickup?
(Ofcourse when running the same kind of setup wih multiple instances of FM8 in a sequenser, Ableton, Cakewalk etc)

I don't see why not. I've never tried the Axon system. But I'd really like to. I'd like to test the responsiveness vis a vis my Roland setup.

Ade, I custom installed a Roland (internal) GK-Kit into my strat. You got to take a router to your axe. I run parallel into a Roland VG-88 (for guitar sounds) and a Roland GR-30 (for synth and midi out). I built my own custom PC and run Cakewalk Sonar and Ableton Live.

alexrainman1975 1 year ago
Stratocaster with custom installed Roland GK-KIT pickup system. The signal is split with a Roland GKP-4 parallel box. One output to Roland VG-88 guitar/amp modeler. Another output goes to a Roland GR-30 guitar synth (that generates the midi data). The GR-30 midi data goes either into the computer (Midiman Midisport) or to a Roland JV-1010 (half rack synth) via a custom made midi switch. On the computer the midi goes to either Ableton Live 6 or Cakewalk Producer 8.

Do you use Ez Dummer for the drums?
pipon55 1 year ago
They were just drum loops that I layered. I don't remember where I got them. I usually, at least, augment the audio loops with some midi drums. Or I roll my own drum tracks (midi) from scratch. That way you can match intensity to the flow of the tune. Percussion is punctuation for what you are trying to 'say'. I was lazy here; just loops.
WeakEndProductions 1 year ago
Did you clean up things after recording? Because I dont't hear any glitches and my GR-20 produces lots of glitches even when I play super clean and slow.
intermediate007 1 year ago
To be honest, i did clean up a few 'clams' in the recording. You do have to try to play a cleanly as possible to get the best recording. You should be getting good results out of you GR-20, playing it's internal sounds (provided it and your pickup and your patches are set up right). The problem occurs when you are trying to drive external (hardware and software) synths that are not set up correctly.

Hey thanks for the sendup. Someone subsequent to you posted that I sounded like Kenny G. Ouch. I'll settle happily for somewhere between Kenny G and 'genius'! Can you trigger sampled guitar sounds...like those cool beatles guitars in East West's Fabfour?
How well would they track...would they capture all of the slides, bends and vibratos?
How does bends, slides and vibratos track on regular synth patches?
novanine9 1 year ago
With a midi guitar you can trigger any sounds that you want, guitar samples included. Your midi guitar can transmit midi 'note on' and 'note off', velocity value and pitchbend data (with string bends and whammy bar). String scrapes, and plucked harmonics generally won't translate into anything other than the above perimeters. If you assigned a string scrape 'sample' to a particular midi note number and/or velocity level you can trigger it. Other modulation data requires a midi foot pedal.

Is it at all possible to use the pickup without having to buy the roland synths? Are there any cheaper synths or compatible pc programs out there that would work with the pickup?
hardvark360 1 year ago
That pickup uses a special 13 pin connection and cable that only works Roland and Axon equipment as far as I know. There is a company (Sonus) that makes a product called a 'G2M' that uses a regular guitar and cable to convert a mono only (no chords) signal into midi data. I haven't tried it but check it out on youtube.

amazing video. I gotta look into getting a midi pickup into one of my guitars because of this vid. also, love the Ibanez roadstar hanging on the wall.
ErikVilardo 1 year ago
Thanks for noticing the Ibanez Roadstar. You've got an educated eye. I've had that guitar for probably 20+ years. I've literally worn it out. At one point I gutted out all the electronics and a made a clear plastic pickguard to attest to that fact. I used it with a Roland GK midi pickup driving a Roland modeling system (VG-88). I turned it into my ANTI-electric guitar. No traditional pickups, no amp, no cabinet. And it sounds great! Thanks for checking out the video.

Are you improsivising? Is that minor pentatonic scale stuff?
Nice sounds.
kleinebudde 1 year ago
Yes I'm improvising. I picked order of guitar synth patches in advance. What I played was based on the way the patch 'felt'; how strong the 'attack' portion of the envelope as well as what was happening with the jam loop (drums on/off). Scales? Pentatonic blues scale, I guess. I'm afraid I have to admit that I can't really read a note and basically know nothing about scales, modes, theory and whatnot. If it sounds good, I figure that you are doing the right thing. Thanks for checking it out.
WeakEndProductions 1 year ago
@WeakEndProductions I think being able to read notes is not necessary to be a good musician, but it can be very helpful. I also don't know much about theory stuff but I watched something about minor pentatonic scales and the pattern looked just like the one, you were using. How long you been playing guitar? I think it's quite a good impro.
kleinebudde 1 year ago
Sounds good + I like your playing. I have a couple GK-strapped guitars into a GI-20 with an Ableton Live setup that I use for work. I love the GK for padding - there's no better way with a guitar. However, IMO for single note lines, old-fashioned modular synths [controlled by guitar audio with no special pickup] capture the touch much better. E.g. I use a sound very similar to your first sound for the song "Whenever You're Around" by Jill Scott, and I get it with Fretted Instruments "Tripp Lead"
pswoods 1 year ago

That's incredible! Can I ask you something?
If i buy a Roland Midi Pickup such as the GK-3, Can I plug my guitar via Midi/USB cable to my PC and then use as input for my Native FM8 or any other VST program? Simple as that?
rafabcarvalho 2 years ago
Not that simple. The Roland pickup is basically six humbucker pickups, one for each string. The pickup itself, doesn't know what to do with those signals. You need a device to interpret those signals into midi. A Guitar synth unit like a Roland GR-20 or an Guitar/midi interface like the Roland GI-20, for instance. Roland (or someone) would be smart to make a GK to USB Analog /Digital interface. Then generate the midi in software on your computer. Hmmm....

I'm new to MIDI, and am a bit perplexed by your solution. Has running multiple instances of Native Instruments removed the requirement that you play to the nearest semitone?
spasticteapot 2 years ago
WeakEndProductions 2 years ago
Why do you need six separate instances of your software synth? I'm new to doing music with a PC, and am curious why you can't configure the guitar as a polyphonic instrument.
spasticteapot 2 years ago
When you play a poly synth keyboard and hit the pitchbend lever the pitch of all notes that you are holding down will shift in pitch. Unfortunately, that's the same thing will happen on a midi guitar. Any accidental or intentional bend of any string will raise all the strings notes. So you can't play guitar like you normally would do. Like where you bend one string up to the pitch of another.
WeakEndProductions 2 years ago

what Midi guitar/ how do you get it/
can you play chords or just single lines?

normality123 2 years ago
I installed a special pickup and electronics to play synths from my guitar. Roland and Godin make midi access guitars, for instance.
Yes, you can play chords as well as single notes. But you're wise to play the synth or sampled instrument similar to the real version so that it sounds credible. Strummed piano or flute, say, sounds really stupid.
