The very last comment lol hahaha... I admire his ignorance from great controversy .but most ppl will agree with him.. some art should not be respected.
Reading's Smart Hotels were so beautiful! But now the Bus Station has replaced the Smart Hotels and they are just a part of the CULT of UGLINESS!!! Maybe one day people will listen to Professor Scruton and Reading can once again become a charming VICTORIAN town with Gothic Churches
@TheAdrian1976 That is exactly what I thought. I mean there is indeed a lot of ugliness in the modern world, especially in functional objects, or applied art. The decline of beauty as a priority can clearly be seen in modern architecture. However I think Scruton takes it too far when he claims that art should only preclude a search for beauty. Art is also a path to truth and that should also be a priority, especially in the fine arts. In that sense, without debasing the meaning of 'Art' itself,
I do not know if I am exagerating, but anyone has noticed, through the history of painting, sculpture(literature and music, as well) in the past 100 years, that most extravagant(in bad taste), ugly, childish-"screwy", senseless art his made by persons belonging to the Jewish faith-people???
If we just keep "showing the here and now, and all its imperfections", and we never strive to attain greater heights, we either stagnate or we spiral downward in a narcissistic cycle of self-mockery.
Scutons arguments on aesthetics point to the perennial and transcendental, which are clearly hard to refute or devalue. i believe he successfully gets the point across that modern art is soulless and without substance.
However, his arguments are too general and polemical to take seriously.he would do well to read Susan Sontag's "against interpretation" as the mean to judge art and its values. Better yet, it is ourselves who can judge the matter. A philosopher who plays judge and tribunal is no philosopher . To ask a question-what is art?- is to delve into many co
mplicated questions that cannot be simply answered by judgements of beauty.
part of the reaction to the cult of beauty in the 20th century was its destructive employment in society- as eugenics (nazism), commodification, and class. If "art" carried on without a criticism of beauty, then Leni Refenstahl would have won an oscar, As it stands, Georgio armani is exhibited in the guggenheim, and vogue is considered an artistic magazine.
Scruton does not scrutinize beauty as yet another commodity used in a process of consumption. While everyone clearly recognizes the vacuousness, even nihilism of contemporary art, his romantic yearning for a 'wholesome' past is an absurd remedy.
. If beauty was the solve to inhumanity, the 20th century would not have witnessed more murders of human against human than all previous centuries combined. As Paul Virilio theorizes, modern art is an expression of post traumatic stress disorders from ww1and2.
Scrutons argument would be bolstered if he stopped pandering to middlebrow viewers and considered more intelligent proposals such as the unifying of the arts and sciences ( like the renaissance) and the integration of liberal arts and humanities with other fields of study...Its not art thats the problem, but a culture that cannot cultivate rounded reflective individuals who have the freedom from producing commodities.
@Xenostrobe : Yes, I'm very interested in beauty - particularly the philosophy of beauty. The mystery of beauty, I find, is absolutely intriguing. We hear all the time that beauty is in the eye of the beholder but I find it interesting that there are phenomena that seem to have universal appeal - such as a glorious sunset; also, there are things that are virtually universally regarded as ugly. If you like philosophy check out my channel - many, many excelent vids in my favorites list.
Children do not produce art. They have no skill. Their "creativity" lies in the fact that they don't know what they're doing.

@TheAdrian1976 it should also be allowed as a medium of expression of the surrounding truths of society.

1960's architecture is criminal and degrading to society.
