Here is the bottom line: yes, Cobain was a great singer/songwriter, BUT, not quite as good as Eddie Vedder. Also, even if Cobain was still alive (R.I.P.), I don't think Nirvana wouldn't record more than 2 more albums before the band eventually fell apart. You have Kurt, with his substance abuse, Novoselic was only known amongst the hardcore Nirvana fans, and I think eventually Grohl would have eventually formed a side-project, like Foo Foghters, and left Nirvana, for the side project.
