Do you think the ThinkPad W510 is still a viable purchase nowadays? Im looking for a workingstation and this thing seems to give me most performance for least money...
Really nice review ! But SSD does not make anything safer or secure. It's also proven that it does not consume less energy. Are the speakers really that nice ? All other reviews I've seen describe them as "muffled" and disapointing.
No one ever does a 1 year or 2 year review. Everyone is a fanboy worshipping the new models. We never hear of any problems we could have with a given unit. What good are these reviews? They're only good to make you feel good , and in that way, they are a new kind of a commercial.
hey dude need help....... Im in animation course nd gng to handle out softwares like photoshop and all and even 3d softs like maya...so dude i was gng for a alienware m17x with a 2gb nvidia gtx580 (coz of higher cuda cores) gpu nd 4gb ram..i even do a lot of gaming,,, so dude need help out in selecting ...should i go with alienware or w520...i hv a budget of arnd $2000...or u hv any other suggests??do help out dude
@peter10195 If you upgrade to the 2000M graphics card, then it's quite good for gaming, not awesome though. If you want a laptop of equal or better quality that you can rely on its durability for gaming, then check out Clevo laptops, Malibal/com is best. Good luck.
I found out you can overclock this system with Throttle Stop 3.0. I over clocked my 920xm and got much better and faster performance. Try it and see if you can TLR and TDP adjustment.
Hey. I was wondering how you got such a great price on your laptop ? Did you use a coupon code at all ? Or go through a special Lenovo Rep to get that price ?
I am customizing ThinkPad W520 Mobile Workstation with the highest specs but I only have one concern and that is its hard drive. I want to know can Intel 320 Series GEN3 600GB 2.5IN SSD SATA2 Solid State Disk Flash Drive fits in it perfectly. I need to know this before I proceed.
@krol0909 I believe one (Toshiba) is an ultra-portable, and may have a lower voltage processor. You should place down your uses for the laptop because a Macbook Air could suit your "power" needs or an Alienware laptop could. Personally, once you go to a thinkpad, you can never go back. Also, I suggest you customize the laptop to your needs and not buy from the store.
Go to notebookcheck . c o m (or google it) and near the upper left hand corner, there is a search engine. Type in Lenovo w510 and click on the first? link to find their review of the machine. Scrolling down you will find a gaming performance section. Then you can also (on the same website) search NVIDIA FX 880M and looking at the benchmarks and etc on the graphics card.
If not, the graphics card is a mid ranged professional card. It has bios and designed for stability but can game.
Do all of the w510s come with touchscreen capabilities? I'm configuring a model, and am leaning towards the "15.6" FHD Display (95% Gamut, 270nit) with LED Backlight" option, but it doesn't say anything about touch screen (one less expensive option/selection does), but it's not FHD, etc. Thanks
Great video tour ! Look like a great machine, can you tell me more about the speakers as I listen to a lot of music and I'm considering buying this lenovo?

@TheOnlyChocomonsta The two main programs that can really use this computer are Solidworks/AutoCad (engineering software which utilizes the nvidia Quadro architecture and huge amounts of RAM) and 1080p movie editing like Sony Vegas, which requires a multi-thread/multi-core processors.
If you require power for artistic (re: adobe software suite), engineering or programming applications, go for this model. I take it everywhere with me, but keep in mind that it's not a featherweight.

Is a Lenovo ThinkPad W520 good for recording and producing music?
I already have an external sound card so that is not an issue. Looking for a high-quality studio on the go. Will a Lenovo ThinkPad W520 do the job?

Wow. This is an awesome, comprehensive review. If you don't mind my using your infinite wisdom ....
I'm looking into buying a new comp, and I'm considering one with power, durability, a spill-resistant keyboard, and price-competitiveness.
I'm thinking about the new Toshiba Portege R835 or a Thinkpad T420. What do you think ?
