Thanks for poasting. I spent some time in the Ardennes checking out the old battlefields there with some of the American and German veterans of that campaign and it was fascinating.
I've herd of rumors of German bunkers that are still untouched and have rows and rows of mint vehicles, tanks along with unopen crates of weapons, clothes, and gear. I don't know the truth in this. I read it on some WWII blog. Wish i could remember the site cause it's pretty interesting stuff. Can anyone confirm this? I'd like to read more about i
I don't think you are ready to do battlefield tours!
We went there a few years ago. It is a very interesting place. Around 24,000 Americans alone became casualties. As someone else said, this was overshadowed by the Bulge. If I remember correctly, it took the Americans some time to work out exactly how much C4 they would need to blow the bunkers. We have photos of this area on Flickr (tt24813055) and other war tours of WWI and WWII.
Unfortunely this battle was really overshadowed by the Battle of the Bulge and virutually forgotten by many aside from the troops, both German and Americans who were there. I follow WWII history quite a bit and even I never heard of it until about 10 years ago when the movie called 'When Triumpants Fade'' came out about it. I think although many consider it as a battle that never should have been fought, it took out several German division that would have part in the Bugle.
What amazee me is the amount of construction the Germans were able to complete on such an enormous scale. I mean think about the Atlantic wall and all the defences in between there and Germany. Not to mention the other numerous fronts. I've watched a simple concrete driveway replacement with modern technology take several days to complete. I can't imagine how those guys ringed in a nation, plus conquered territories, with similar bunkers and defenses in the relatively short time span.
When I was stationed at Karlsruhe, Germany, Gerszewski Barracks {Rhineland Karsern} , 1969....I found two bunkers just north of the post, about 400 yards. If any one would post them with photo's I would be very pleased to see them once more....Thank You, Gerald
This bunker is a Regelbautyp 10. Gruppenunterstand mit angehängtem Kampfraum. Armed with 1 MG 34 (and not holding a canon). The bunker was occupied by 15 soldiers. Size: 9,80 m x 11,10 m. There are 2 gas sluices and 2 rooms. With 3.471 build of which 491 in NRW this is most common build type. The side you are looking at in the video is the back of the bunker.
@luuktheman. You are correct and we are indeed wrong in our assumptions in the video. Facts are facts and we were wrong. We have tried to correct this in some subtitles in the video. We obviously did not realise that we were peeking into the bunker from the backside. We know better now.
@luuktheman lol, that's a funny comment. XD You could have just translated all the German words, or were you too lazy? (Yeah, I know that the comment is 2 years old)
that was big of you to admit to mistakes, more people should do it , thank you

Decent vid but did need to say "bunker" 37 times? We know what he is referring to, he's not standing in front of a tennis court.

i think its amazing how the camouflage is still intact, after all the shells and bullets that were fired at it in an attempt to destroy it. 10/10!
