Turkey's Secularists are the fanatics who are a threat to the country and are the real threat to freedom in the country and the region. There're many religious political parties in power in the EU however they have in no way endangered the secularism of their countries. Turkey is still confused and still doesn't understand that there can be seperation of state and religion and that there is no need for fundamentalist secularists.

Attaturk destroyed Turkey and tried to make it something it is not: Western and to ensure he achieved his goal he massacred 1.5 million Armenians and established a millitary dictatorship. Turkey is not a democracy regardless of what the blind posters here keep writing.

the AK parties domestic success probably has alot to do with its lack of corruption. the so called "secular" leadership of the 90's and the military all have ties to the US and oversaw great corruption, economic decline, and profiting for US businesses and weapons dealers. they may be trying to halt the overall progress of turks, to enshrine their aristocracy in the name of secularism.

these old dogmas persist in europe and are the main stumbling block that europe needs to deal with before integration can happen. until then, turkey will always be seen as inferior and will be held seen as backwards and violent. for example, the demands for turkey to accept the armenian genocide, when europe wont recognize the countless millions that have died and suffered as a result of centuries of imperialism (e.g. algeria, the americas, africa, etc.) it is hypocritical to say the least.

sarkozy and others will always see turkey as inferior in race, culture, and politics. after WWI, europe wanted to make turkey their colony, similar to what they did in palestine. they wanted to subject the turks to the whim of the greeks, italians, british, and french... much like the palestinians are subjected to the euro jews; the soviet union helped the turkish revolution.
