God sure has a habbit of wiping out civiliztions, enslaving peoples, allowing the innocent to die, and so on. How are you Christians so confident that it's love? Those things display indifference.
A good and thought-provoking episode. However, I'll stick to science, thanks, rather than placing my 'blind faith' in a man-made construct like 'God'. Nobody's up there and nobody's listening. Don't waste your time in pointless self-delusion -just live your life to the full. Most importantly, think for yourself rather than being brainwashed by religious fervour. Amen to that!
This episode, as I watched it as a kid, God brought from my memory the night I converted to Christ 3 years ago. As well he informed me that we just can't see the big picture why things happen as they happen, we just need to love and put trust in him. There was nothing I saw or heard, it was just clear thoughts. I am aware that this sounds totally insane to the most of you, I would probably react the same way if someone told me that, but I just need to share it, no matter how awkward it seems.
@imbrod It doesn't sound insane friend. It's simply called faith. :-D. It took many mistakes and tears (as a life-long Christian) to get what you so easily realized even as a babe in Christ. I finally have complete and utter faith in our Lord and I tell ya, I couldn't be happier.I feel warm and oh so LOVED. It's like literally being hugged by God! I applaud you for sharing your beliefs and feelings. I am glad there are more like you in the world. Peace, Love and Blessings from L.A!
@bitchingood Thanks, man - although I don't really like your nick name, so I can't address you by it :) I am glad for you and your faith! Just make sure that your neighbors see the light you shine so they might wonder - what's that source that drives that fellow? And you can answer simply - Jesus! Blessings to you too from Croatia
@imbrod Haha, IDK if I can change my nickname now, but if I can I'm going to, lol. Just call me Raine. (A woman, lol)
Yes, people say they see a change in me, trust me, I have serious issues, but thanks to the Lord, I place my burdens upon Him and trust that He'll see me through! And He'll do the same for you, cuz He LOOOVES YOU! Take Care and God Bless. Message or add me if you ever want to chat!
I remember this so vividly as a kid..can't believe I found it. I didn't know this series had that high of a budget for it's time. I've seen cheesier things from the 80's. As for the content...perhaps one of the most original storylines I have ever come across. As a Christian, I found it incredibly thought provoking. How often do we hear that the death of someone can signify a turnaround for another person?? It's God's work...the Phoenix rises from the ashes! Merry Christmas Everyone!
@larrytate555 ....one other thing......While I still like the story, there is a plot hole: if their books survived....why didn't they just live underground? If they were intelligent enough to travel to another planet and hide their stuff...couldn't they have built a colony underground ?
one of the greatest, most civilized debates about God vs. Science from 1:00 - 2:20. Now THAT'S how a real argument should take place for all of us. It reminds me of the Richard Dawkins vs. Alister McGrath debate - probably the most excellent, most respectful religion debate in history.
God deals with us more justly than our sins deserve. I find the grace of God, through Jesus Christ, sufficient to endure suffering and count these temporary afflictions light in contrast with the everlasting to come. *Pile* does it seem those who committed such horrible deeds ever truly knew Christ? Doesn't seem so. So either do as Christ commands or not. But God works in abundance and in lack, in joy and sorrow, in all so we can choose him or not.
Yep, nothing says Loving God than watching your entire civilization die horribly so some guys lightyears away can found a religion based on it and then misinterpret it and do horrible deeds in its name for 2000 years. Oh yeah, religion is fucking awesome... pricks.
Aww shit, it's The Star by Arthur C. Clarke! Read this in Philosophy this year; honestly, I've read better by Clarke, but at least the story has some merit. (But really, you'd think that far in the future we'd be rid of such a useless thing as Christianity.)
THIS APPEARS 2 BE THA CONCLUSION 2 THA BIBLE AFTER THE THOUSAND YEARS WERE FINISH WITH GODS PEOPLE EXISTIN IN PEACE WITH THE CHRIST SO THE PEOPLE WERE CAUGHT UP N THE RAPTURE BEFORE THE PLANET BURN UP ANDTHE REST WERE CAUGHT N THE FIRE THAT THE BIBLE SPEAKS OF..THATS GOT 2 BE WHERE THE AUTHOR GOT THIS CONCEPT FROM THE BIBLE..AND IT HAPPEN N THE 3THOUSAND 120TH YEAR.RIGHT NOW ITS 2011 SO WE NOW HAVE EVOLVE TRYING 2 GET 2 PEACE FOR THOUSAND YEARS THEN 120 YEARS ARTIFACTS
This was very well done and didn't succumb to the usual gaffs of short science fiction such as appearing outdated by over-emphasizing futuristic technologies or mannerisms; no easy feat in this genre. Then again, it probably helps having such a thorough blueprint as a Clarke story to work from. I enjoyed this equally to the print version for being inspiring without feeling heavy-handed. Thanks for sharing.
"Oh God, there were so many stars you could have used. What was the need to give these people to the fire, that the symbol of their passing might shine above Bethlehem?"
@TheVoiceOfReason93 In the short story, those are the absolute last lines written, none of this, "oooh look, a poem, god is good and wonderful and magical and what he did was ay-okay!" impression we're given because the producers didn't want all the crazy religious people to flip their shit.
Great segment!! It's no wonder that it was based on a short story by Arthur C. Clarke. Sure, one needs to watch it with a suspension of disbelief (there was, for example, no such astronomical event at the birth of Jesus of Nazareth), but the perspective that the segment offers on our assessment of our place in the universe and on religion and science is positive and, in my opinion, a good model.
This was one of my favorites. The idea that the extinction of one civilization served as a sign to mark Christ's birth is really mind boggling. I do think this was one of the most original, in terms of ideas, in this whole series. Thank you for posting!
