  • secretogolf cont'd, However it is unnecessary to rotate the right wrist just before impact! That is more of a preference that works in some techniques and fails in others.

  • Secretogolf, Thanks. As far as you question it is kind of a loaded one, because many stroke techniques will do neither. As far as power application is concerned the arm action multiplies and delivers it, or even better yet conveys it, instead of creates it. And certainly our lever delivery action needs to be employed precisely to achieve the desired levels of accuracy and power. cont;d

  • watertonrivers cont'd. I showed this pro an application that matched his body mechanics and once again he was impressed with how solid he began striking the ball. This pro struggled with pulls and pull hooks as his misses, however with the new technique he never hooked one and the biggest pull was 20 feet. So the point is, even if you are playing with your natural arm in control you still need to use a technique that matches your body mechanics and condtioned athleticism.

  • watertonrivers, so after all the concept of using the right arm was perfect for him if he had the correct application. And in his words it was better than anything he had ever tried before, including left side control. Yesterday I worked another pro that said he scoops it if he uses the right arm/hand dominantly. However when using the left side it seems to be a balancing act from week to week. cont'd

  • Watertonrivers cont'd. For example I met top 100 teacher at the PGA merchandise show this year that had similar concerns. We were at the demo day and I test his body mechanics and showed him an application that matched his body and conditioned athleticism and all of a sudden he was compressing the ball and producing ball flight that he had never seen before. The old flawed habit went away and he realized that it was something in his concept of what he thought he should do that was wrong cont;d

  • watertonrivers, I have heard you story many times before. However, every time I have personally worked with a golfer that is truly right handed and tends to cast, scoop, flip or any other action with the right hand the cause is usually some other habit or misunderstanding about their golf swing. Usually the golfer is unaware of the type of linkage that matches your body mechanics and the type of stroke technique that best matches their conditioned athleticism. cont'd

  • @eagolfpro I am right handed but I personally am deadmeat if I try to control my golfswing with the right hand. I tend to cast it with my right so I let my left hand dominate. Not trying to be contrary but if I think about much grip pressure in the right hand I am liable to spray it all over the golfcourse.

  • Great video-Do we control power or direction by rotating the right wrist just before impact?

  • So i am looking forward to adding strength and power to my right hand only shots when i go down the range having realised from swinging ing in the office that i wasnt using my right shoulder muscles properly. I will report back any improvement.

  • EA thank you for your prompt and thoughtful response, although not ambidextrous i have become moreso through practicing golf lef hand only and feel i could almost play a tennis left handed topspin back hand. However I do practice right hand only and can hit a 7 iron 80 yds or so but have benefited more from roght hand only in the chipping and putting dept. However i have just realised I have not been coilng my right shoulder muscles properly, due to learning with a dead one piece takeaway swing,

  • biggrrrr7 cont'd: As with any short tip, each golfer needs to use it and give it a real go and find out for him or herself what the real value is. And when doing so it is advised that they get some coaching from someone that really knows how it works so that they make sure they a doing it correctly for their needs and can get the most out of it.

  • Biggrrrr7 cont'd: Aputee golfers have also proven to us that they can play very successfully with only one arm, with all clubs. However the point of the video tip is really for those golfers that have been using the more left arm control action in the swing and have been failing miserably with it. It is also for those golfers that have had success using a more dominant right side and have been encourage to abandon it and go with more left side. cont'd

  • Biggrrrr7, when training any drill we must also be aware of whether it fits are chosen or conditioned stroke technique. There are certainly techniques that work better holding on with the left hand and allowing the pivotal action to do most of the work, with the left hand managing squaring of the clubface. However those techniques won't work for everyone. There are many golfers that play the ball further right arm only as compared to left arm only (from the right handers side). cont'd

  • biggrrrr7 cont'd: It is also clear that over 90% of the truly right handed golfers I have taught and given the opportunity to use both right arm and left arm only training have failed miserably at left arm only training and excelled at right arm only training. I find that ambidextrous golfers are the best at using the left arm only from the right-handed side. Though there are those right handed golfers that are also successful using left only from the right side. cont'd

  • biggrrrr7, Over the years I have found that it is actually the truly dominant right-handed golfers that benefit the most from this training. That is because it is their natural side and natural action. I am ambidextrous and I swing much better with my right side in control of the delivery action when swinging right sided, and left side in control when swinging left sided. Of course that is my personal experience. cont'd

  • Although I practice reguarly right hand only and agree hit hard with the right side was one of Hogans secrets he was only able to do this because he was naturally left handed and had a powerful and co ordinated left side.Consequently I have always practiced to strengthen and co-ordinate by striking the ball left hand only as well and i still hit it slightly further with my left arm only than right arm only!

  • Adam54545454, I am unsure what you are getting at. Seems like you are trying to day something without saying it.

  • THIS IS NOT BEN HOGAN. WELCOME TO DOWNVOTE HELL.

  • DellanJev, In conclusion, there are many reasons for training the dominant arm only swings. And since we are each unique in are biomechanical make-ups we need to understand which techniques work best for ourselves, and assuming that what works best for one person will be best for all others is bad advice. However if it is effective for a golfer that you are trying to emulate than give it a go and see if it works for you. If it fails to work, than maybe you need another swing to emulate.

  • DellanJev, I believe it is a huge assumption to say that the hardest thing to do in the downswing TACK-IN your right arm to the right side of your stomach. It may have been very hard for you, and even many others, however many golfers find it easy to do. Also, do to biomechanical patterns some golfers never need to do so, some are front linkage while others are center linkage golfers. On-top golfers keep the elbow more back and Side-On golfers marry it to the side of the body.

  • DellanJev, the key to dominant arm control is learning to use it properly for golf as compared to improperly, which could be using a modern tennis action to play modern golf. Additionally, although some stroke patterns use a balance between the right and left hands, most will be either dominantly left handed or dominantly right handed. Hogan believed the stroke was like a side arm throw. Since he played right handed golf he believe it was extremely important to train the right handed action

  • DellanJev, many golfers swing, hit or throw in golf with extremely dominant right arm and hand actions without ever swinging over the top. If you learned to play modern tennis you most likely had a very strong rolling action and you most likely also rotated too soon from the top. Many golfers need to allow the arms and club to drop into the slot before they turn. That is a completely different issue than swinging with dominant arm control.

  • You know why it is good to practice the right-hand of the righthanded? It is because the most difficult thing to do in the downswing is to TACK-IN your right elbow to your stomach's right-side when one is about to hit the ball in the downswing. That's the reason to practice the right-hand always.

  • I am a right-handed. When I started playing golf my right hand was so strong and predominant because I was also a right-handed tennis player. With my right hand so strong and predominant, my left-hand could not stretch and have controlling direction in the follow through, so I kept swinging "outside-in","over-the-top", as my right hand is so predominant in hitting the ball. So, I keep practicing my left hand to be strong and be predominant in stretching to have full follow-through. Good results

  • DASH1ful. cont'd: Lastly, I played weekly for two years with a world war II aircraft career pilot that played on the military teams and played regularly against Hogan and Snead and he told me that Hogan told him the same thing. Now, Hogan likely had many reasons for saying what he did and some of his statements contradict each other over time. However, I have personally heard many more reports from people that talked to Hogan and Hogan told them all the same thing. Enough evidence for me.

  • DASH1ful. cont'd: I have talked to dozens of people that interviewed Hogan and knew Hogan and many of them have talked to Hogan about it. A variety of interviewers told me that they specifically asked Hogan that question and he told them he was born left-handed. And many of those interviews were well after his playing career was over. Additionally I used to coach a pro that shagged balls for Hogan and Hogan told him the same thing. cont'd

  • DASH1ful, there has been much talk about whether Hogan was born left handed or right handed. The fact that he wrote right handed is little confirmation of him being born right handed. When he was growing up most people that were left handed were forced to learn how to write right handed. My grandmother, some other relatives, and quite a few other people I have met were born left handed and forced to write right handed. cont'd

  • Very good tip. Hogan never really was naturally left handed as we were led to believe In M F, as he admitted to Golf Digest in later life. Also there is a drawing in the book of him writing with his right hand. His back-swing was clearly dominated by his right arm. I think the next stage up from this exercise is practise with both hands on but taking the first 3 fingers of the left hand off. This helps to use the left hand as a pivotal point and develop a double sided grip with the left hand.

  • Riverace7, as I have stated many times and written in my books, Hogan was born left-handed (which is confirmed in his own words) however played right handed golf and was at least somewhat ambidextrous. When we apply the concept dominant hand to the golf swing we can define it in a variety of ways. The natural hand coordination, the side the golfer is playing from (hogan played right-handed golf) and/or the arm that delivers the stroke. Since he was at least somewhat ambidextrous and played f

  • hogans dominant hand was his left

  • I think I can get Tiger's yacht for $20 million.

  • Hoganfan100, it has been well documented by many people other than myself, writers and I interviewers that actually interviewed Hogan, that Hogan himself said he was born left-handed. My contention is that we was actually ambi-dextrous.

  • I agree with his teaching, the dominant hand should play the shot. Great video and lesson.

  • Since you are right handed playing left handed golf, yet somewhat ambidextrous you are best off performing this drill with your left arm in control. Hogan was born left handed and played right handed and was somewhat ambidextrous and he did it everyday, 100 times a day with his right hand in control. It will help improve your left side co-ordination as the dominant move in your stroke, like it was in your Hockey stroke. You will continue to heighten your left side co-ordination by doing it.

  • @eagolfpro not true Hogan was born right handed

  • my dominant hand is my right hand, however, i swing left handed...do i perform this drill with my left hand, or my right hand?
